Selling a junk car in East Ridge
East Ridge fits 21,921 people into 8.282 square miles, a few miles from downtown Chattanooga, and we could not find its own junk-car code online. That's why we lean on Tennessee law here. East Ridge could add local rules beyond it. Either way, we buy whole non-running and junk cars: sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

When Tennessee calls a car abandoned
The Department of Revenue lists five situations. Each has its own clock:
- over four years old and left on public property for more than 10 days
- in obvious disrepair on public property for more than 3 days
- parked unlawfully on public property longer than 48 hours
- sitting on private land longer than 48 hours without the owner's OK
- stored or left in a lot for more than 30 consecutive days
The fourth one matters most on a street lined with shops, like Ringgold Road. A dead car left on a business lot without permission is abandoned under state law after two days. If someone else's car gets left on your property, it isn't yours to sell. Tennessee does not let private individuals use the abandoned-vehicle sale procedure, so the finder has to verify ownership through the Department of Revenue. Our page on a car abandoned on your property has more.
If a tow company takes it
An East Ridge tower has 3 business days after a tow to mail the state a "Request for Verification of Ownership." It then has 3 business days from the reply to notify owners and lienholders. Unless the owner or lienholder agrees, storage stops at 60 days. If the tow firm misses those deadlines, storage is capped at six days.
Title and plates in Hamilton County
Titles are issued by the county clerk, so an East Ridge sale runs through the Hamilton County clerk. You don't need a notary. Sign in the assignment area and print your name the same as on the front of your East Ridge title.
Keep the plates. In Tennessee they belong to you, not the car, and moving them to another vehicle costs $1. We found no release-of-liability form to file. Hamilton County dropped emissions testing in January 2022, so an old test is no longer needed to title or register a car. After you sell covers the last steps.
Nearby
In a straight line, Chattanooga sits 4.9 miles off and Cleveland 23.8. The Tennessee page has the statewide rules.
