Getting rid of a junk car in Hutto
A tarp buys you nothing in Hutto. The city's code lists the tarps and covers on a junked vehicle as part of the nuisance, and it says outright that a tarp is not screening. If the car is done for, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. Sell the whole car as it sits; the truck meets it where it is, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Hutto's junked-vehicle test
Hutto's junked vehicle is one built to move under its own power that has no unexpired plate on it and has been crashed, dismantled or discarded, or has sat dead longer than the code allows. Hutto's allowance: a public street or lot gets 72 consecutive hours, a private yard 30 consecutive days.
No owner or occupant may keep one, or its parts, in ordinary public view. Lock it fully inside a building and Hutto does not call it a junked vehicle at all. A collector's antique may hide behind a fence or shrubbery instead, but no covering counts.
Code Enforcement now sits inside the Hutto Police Department. Inoperable vehicles are one of five things it handles, alongside dangerous structures, debris, high grass and weeds, and sign violations. Complaints go to the Senior Code Enforcement Officer at (512) 759-5994.
From notice to scrap yard
The removal order is written, signed off by the chief of police or a code enforcement officer, and allows 10 days from mailing or delivery. Hutto mails it certified to the car's registered owner, each lienholder too, and the Hutto property owner or the tenant there. A brightly colored notice is also stuck on the car itself, though the case goes ahead even if that one is missing.
To fight it, file a hearing request with the municipal court clerk inside the 10 days; Hutto asks no bond. With no request on file, the vehicle is conclusively presumed junked. At a hearing, Hutto presumes it inoperable, and the burden of showing it runs is yours. A violation is a misdemeanor, and after a conviction a Hutto judge orders the nuisance cleared. Impounded junked vehicles can be sold, or towed off to a demolisher or scrap yard, and rebuilding them is off the table.
Streets and yards
An inoperable or dismantled vehicle on a public street in Hutto can be removed after 72 hours. Parking on the roadway to store a broken car, or to work on one, is unlawful except in an emergency.
The yard is no fallback. In any residential district, Hutto bars parking, standing or storing a vehicle on unimproved surfaces, and that includes front and side yards. Paved parking is capped at 40% of the yard or 400 square feet.
When the city pulls a car off a street, it sends notice. The owner or lienholder gets it back only after covering towing, preservation and storage. A car nobody comes for within 20 days of that notice can go to auction. Hutto Police list a 24-hour non-emergency number, 512-846-2200.
Title, plates and the Georgetown office
Williamson County's tax office is at 1848 Texas Trail in Georgetown, phone (512) 943-1601, roughly 8 miles northwest of central Hutto as the crow flies. Your buyer files there for a new title.
Your part, per TxDMV: hand your buyer the signed title, with the date you sold and the odometer reading written on it, plus Form 130-U, signed by you, listing the sale price. Keep notes for yourself: buyer's name and phone, the day you sold, the VIN. The Vehicle Transfer Notification goes to TxDMV no later than day 30. The state's record keeps your name on the car until the new title is issued.
Take the plates if you want them. There is no charge to move them onto a later car at a Texas county tax office, which hands you a fresh registration sticker; the old sticker never transfers.
Safety inspections ended statewide on January 1, 2025, but Williamson is still on the emissions list. The emissions record comes into play when a buyer registers the car.
What we need from you
Call (877) 421-6008 or ask online. Tell us the make and model, the mileage, whether it cranks, and whether you hold the title. Pickup can happen at a driveway near downtown, a work lot or a repair shop. Hutto sits near Round Rock and Pflugerville; for the whole state, see Texas.
Questions people ask
- Does a fitted cover make a dead car legal in Hutto?
- No. Hutto counts the tarps and covers on a junked vehicle as part of the nuisance itself, and its code refuses to treat a tarp or anything like one as screening. A car shut away out of sight inside a building is the case the definition leaves out.
- What happens if I ignore a Hutto junked-vehicle notice?
- Removal is ordered within 10 days. Skip the hearing request to the municipal court clerk in that window and Hutto treats the vehicle as conclusively junked. An impounded one can then be sold or sent to a scrap yard or demolisher, and rebuilding it is not allowed.
- Can I park a broken car in my Hutto front yard while I fix it?
- Not on grass or dirt. In residential districts Hutto bars parking, standing or storing a vehicle on unimproved surfaces, front and side yards included.
- Does a junk car from Hutto need an emissions test before I sell it?
- Williamson County still tests for emissions; it is on the state's 17-county list. Whoever registers the car has to show a passing record if one is not already on file, so TxDMV's advice to buyers is to request the most recent Vehicle Inspection Report from you.
