Selling a dead or junk car in Kyle

In much of Kyle, a dead car cannot even sit in the side yard. The city's parking rules say a single-family zoning district allows no motor vehicle, at any time, to be parked or left in a front yard or a side yard. If yours has stopped running and the garage is full, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and the truck comes to it with free pickup anywhere in the US.

When Kyle calls a car junked

Kyle's code starts with self-propelled vehicles and gives three tests. Any one is enough. The car has no unexpired license plate. It is a wreck, taken apart, or thrown away. Or it has stayed dead too long: Kyle's clock runs out after 72 hours in a row when the car sits on public property, and after 30 straight days on private land.

If people on a Kyle street or right-of-way can see such a car, in any season, the code calls it a public nuisance, and keeping it there is unlawful. The offense is a misdemeanor. Each one can cost up to $200, every day is its own violation, and Kyle's municipal court orders the vehicle hauled off.

The only shelter the code names is a building. Park the car fully inside one, hidden from the street and the neighbors' lots, and the abatement steps do not reach it.

The 10-day letter

Kyle police mail the notice certified. From then you have 10 days to get the car gone and to request a hearing. Ask in time and Kyle holds the hearing on day 11 or later. There, the law assumes the car does not run; proving that it does is up to you. After the city removes a junked vehicle, Kyle forbids rebuilding it or putting it back on the road.

Police can also bill storage on abandoned and junked vehicles they take. The meter starts the day of removal and can reach back up to 10 days before the notice goes in the mail.

Street rules in Kyle

Section 47-26 puts a 24-hour limit on large motor vehicles, travel trailers and boats on a public street. It sets no separate clock for an ordinary car. Kyle bans parking a car on the street to work on it, emergency repairs aside, and bans parking one there to advertise it for sale.

Kyle's abandoned label kicks in at 48 hours: 48 hours of illegal parking on a public street or lot, or 48 hours on a neighbor's land without leave. After notice, the owner or lienholder has until the 20th day to buy an impounded one back if they cover what the towing, preservation and storage cost.

Street and public-property cases go to the police non-emergency line, 512-268-3232. Private-property complaints go to Code Enforcement through Kyle 311, or 512-262-3914.

Paperwork through Hays County

Texas has no state title counter for this; Hays County's tax assessor-collector handles it. The Hays County office sits at 712 S. Stagecoach Trail, Suite 1120, in San Marcos, phone (512) 393-5545, roughly 10 miles southwest of central Kyle as the crow flies.

Skip the notary. Per TxDMV, a Kyle seller's title assignment, bill of sale and odometer statement all go unnotarized. Then tell the state you sold it. The Vehicle Transfer Notification (file it at TxDMV.gov/VTN, or mail Form VTR-346) is due inside 30 days; send it on time and toll bills or parking tickets the new owner runs up are not yours to answer for.

The plates are yours to take off, along with the registration sticker. Reuse them on your next car of that same classification, keep them in a drawer, or deface them if they are headed out with the garbage.

No title? Texas lets a used automotive parts recycler accept a titleless car when its age is 13 years or more, has lacked registration for at least seven years, and is bought just for parts or scrap. Otherwise see selling with no title.

Emissions tests are not required in Hays County, which is missing from TxDMV's 17-county list. The yearly safety inspection for noncommercial vehicles went away statewide on January 1, 2025.

Ask for an offer

Call (877) 421-6008 or fill in the form with the car's year, make and model, its miles, whether the engine turns over, and how the title looks. A truck heads to whatever Kyle address holds the car, be it a home garage, an office parking lot or the Kyle mechanic's bay where it was left. Nearby, see San Marcos and Austin, or Texas for the statewide rules.

Questions people ask

Can I park my dead car in the side yard in Kyle?
Not in a single-family zoning district. There, Kyle allows no motor vehicle in a front yard or a side yard at any time, whether it runs or not. If it is also visible and has been dead for 30 days straight, it can be handled as a junked-vehicle nuisance on top of that.
How long do I have after Kyle police send a junked-vehicle notice?
Ten days from the certified letter, both to get the car gone and to ask for a hearing. Kyle schedules a requested hearing for day 11 or later, and at that hearing the car counts as inoperable until you show Kyle otherwise.
Which number handles an abandoned car parked on a Kyle street?
Kyle routes street and other public-property cases to the police non-emergency line, 512-268-3232. For a car on private land, Kyle wants a Code Enforcement report, through Kyle 311 or 512-262-3914.
Is a notary needed on the title when I sell my Kyle junk car?
No. Kyle sellers can sign without one; TxDMV exempts the title assignment, any bill of sale and the odometer statement from notarization.
