Selling a junk or dead car in League City
League City gives an inoperable car 45 days. Its code defines a junked vehicle as one that "is self-propelled and inoperable and does not have lawfully attached to it an unexpired license plate or a valid motor vehicle inspection certificate, is wrecked, dismantled, or partially dismantled, or discarded; or has remained inoperable for more than 45 consecutive days." It turns into a public nuisance once anyone on public ground can see it. And those 45 days cannot be spent on the lawn: League City treats a car parked on grass as a violation in its own right.

The police run this one
In League City the police department administers the junked-vehicle rules, not a separate code office. The code lets officers, "in the course of law", go onto private land to look at a car, learn whose it is and remove one declared a nuisance. The municipal court issues whatever orders that takes.
The steps under Section 86-124:
- Certified mail. Per the code, "the last known registered owner of the motor vehicle or watercraft and all lienholders of record and the owner or occupant of the premises" must "first be notified by certified mail with a five-day return request". The letter allows ten days for two things: getting rid of the car and requesting a hearing.
- Undelivered notice. "If the notice is returned and undelivered by the United States post office, official action to abate such nuisance shall be continued to a date not less than the 11th day from the date of such return."
- Hearing. The owner or occupier "shall have a right to a public hearing before the municipal court of the city within ten days after notice".
- Order. Once heard, the court may order the car taken away. "Junked vehicles or junked watercraft or parts thereof may be disposed of by removal to a scrap yard, a demolisher or any suitable site operated by the city for processing as scrap or salvage." Afterward it "shall not be reconstituted or made operable".
Ignoring a notice or an order is a misdemeanor, with a fine from $1.00 up to the maximum the law allows. Each day counts as a separate offense.
Cars sealed inside a garage or other building, hidden from the road and the lots around it, fall outside the subdivision. Dealer, junkyard and collector cars do too, if kept tidy and screened.
Street, grass and sidewalk
- Section 110-225 sets a 48-hour cap, without a break, for any vehicle left on a League City street, alley, avenue or other public way.
- Other rules let the city pull an abandoned or traffic-blocking vehicle off public property right away. The notice process above does not slow those down.
- The city's brochure asks for concrete or another approved surface under every parked car, and nothing blocking a sidewalk or right-of-way.

Two county offices
League City spans Galveston and Harris counties. Measured in straight lines (as the crow flies) from central League City, the Galveston County office (722 21st St, in Galveston) lies about 23 miles southeast, (409) 766-2284. The Harris County office on Preston in Houston is about 24 miles northwest, (713) 274-8000.
Totaled? Texas treats a car as a salvage motor vehicle once fixing it, minus paint and sales tax, would cost more than its cash value right before the wreck. A car worth only parts or scrap gets a nonrepairable title instead. See salvage title and flood damage.
For the sale, the seller's job is a Vehicle Transfer Notification, sent within 30 days. Ownership does not change by that notice; the new title only comes after the buyer applies to the county. More on the Texas page.
Getting an offer
Online or at (877) 421-6008, send the details: year and model, odometer, running or not, and the title's status. Our truck can pick it up from a driveway, a shop, or the roadside where it stopped. Dickinson is 4.1 miles away, Friendswood 5.6 and Alvin 8.3.
Questions people ask
- When does a dead car in League City legally become junked?
- League City's definition gives an inoperable car 45 days in a row before it qualifies on time alone, provided it has no current plate or valid inspection certificate. Wrecked, dismantled or discarded cars qualify without waiting. Visible to the public, it becomes a nuisance.
- Can I park my broken-down car on the lawn while I sell it?
- No. The city lists parking on the grass as a code violation (ordinance 125-170 (20)). Its brochure says vehicles must be on concrete or another approved surface and may not block a sidewalk or right-of-way.
- What happens after League City sends a junked-vehicle notice?
- Once the certified letter arrives, the clock is ten days, both for moving the car and for asking to be heard. The code says the owner or occupier "shall have a right to a public hearing before the municipal court of the city within ten days after notice". The court may then order removal.
- Which county tax office do I use from League City?
- League City sits in Galveston and Harris counties. Galveston County's office at 722 21st St is about 23 miles southeast, and Harris County's on Preston in Houston is about 24 miles northwest.
