Selling a dead or junk Toyota Celica
A Celica that burns oil, won't start or has been parked for years can be sold whole, with nothing fixed. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The newest US Celica is a 2005, so every one on the road is past 20 years old. NHTSA's file on the car is short, 406 complaints across 1984-2005, and two stories stand out in it: early-1990s air bags that owners say never fired, and oil burning on the 2000-2001 liftback.
The five Celicas sold in the US
Every Celica was built in Japan. This page covers the 1984 through 2005 model years.
- 1984-1985 (A60): a 2.4-liter four, the 22R or the fuel-injected 22R-E. It is the biggest four-cylinder ever offered in a Celica. Four-speed automatic or five-speed manual, built at Tsutsumi and Tahara.
- 1986-1989 (T160): 2.0-liter fours. The 2S-ELC lasted one year, then came the 3S-FE and 3S-GE, plus a turbocharged All-Trac. Built at Tahara.
- 1990-1993 (T180): a 1.6-liter 4A-FE in the ST, a 2.2-liter 5S-FE in the GT and GT-S, and a 2.0-liter turbo in the All-Trac.
- 1994-1999 (T200): a 1.8-liter 7A-FE with 110 hp or the 135-hp 2.2-liter 5S-FE. The turbo was dropped from the US lineup.
- 2000-2005 (T230): liftback only, from the Higashi-Fuji plant in Susono. The GT had a 140-hp 1.8-liter 1ZZ-FE. The GT-S had a 180-hp 1.8-liter 2ZZ-GE with a six-speed manual, or an automatic shifted by buttons on the wheel. In July 2004 Toyota said the 2005 would be the last US model.
Where the complaints cluster
1990-1995: air bags that stayed folded
With 69 complaints, air bags top the Celica's component list, and 47 of those are on 1990-1995 cars. In the complaint listing for the 1990, 5 of 11 air bag complaints say the driver's bag failed to deploy when the car hit something head-on. On the 1992 it is 9 of 14. Those are owners' accounts, not NHTSA findings.
One recall touches this. Recall 90V078 replaced air bag inflators on 2,543 vehicles because the inflator case was machined wrong, which could keep the bag from deploying.
A second air bag recall reaches the 1998-1999 cars. Recall 20V033, from January 2020, covers driver inflators that can take on moisture and burst, sending metal fragments into the cabin. Owners may check the steering wheel serial number themselves or let a dealer inspect it, and affected inflators are replaced. The campaign's 138,842 vehicles also include 1998-2000 RAV4s and 1997-1998 Supras. Of all six Celica campaigns, this is the one most worth a VIN check.
2000-2001: the 1.8-liter and its oil
The 2000 has 106 complaints, more than any other Celica year, and 38 fall under engine and cooling. In the listing, 20 engine complaints on the 2000 mention oil, and 16 of them say the engine was using it up. One owner writes that the car went through all its oil in three months. Another reports a quart every thousand miles and two replacement engines.
The 2001 tells the same story at a smaller scale: of 16 complaints that mention oil, 13 are about consumption. One owner names the 1ZZ-FE and a liter lost per tank. Another says a dealer diagnosed sludge. No Toyota or NHTSA document we read names a cause or a repair program, and most of these reports were filed between 2003 and 2019, so treat them as owner reports, not a failure rate.
2000-2003: three smaller recalls
Recall 03V074 covered 2002-2003 cars whose fuel tank check valve could break loose and fall into the tank, letting fuel spill from the filler neck when the pump nozzle shut off. Recall 04V566 added a resistor to dim 2000-2001 daytime running lamps that were brighter than federal standard 108 allows. Recall 04V455 had dealers check the brake master cylinder on 2000 cars for a seal ring that an improper washing process could have corroded; that campaign also took in the 2000 Echo.
The record by model year
Tallied from NHTSA data pulled October 10, 2026; quiet years are grouped. A campaign that covers two model years appears in both rows.

The lone 2005 campaign is a load-label recall from Gulf States Toyota, a regional distributor, that covered many models. Seat belts and power train come next after air bags and engine, with 30 complaints each.
Worth fixing, or time to sell?
Line up a written estimate against the asking prices for running Celicas from your year, in your trim. When the estimate eats most of that price, the repair rarely pays you back.
- Recalls come first. Put the VIN into NHTSA's lookup, above all on a 1998 or 1999.
- Burning oil on a 2000-2001? We found no Toyota program for it, and the sludge settlement that named 1997-1999 Celicas closed long ago. Any fix is at your own cost.
- Engine already gone? Blown engine walks through the choice.
For what changes the price of a car that doesn't run, see what a junk car is worth.
How to sell your Celica whole
- Write down the basics: VIN, mileage, trim (ST, GT, GT-S or All-Trac) and what's wrong.
- Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe where it's parked, be it a carport, a side street or the back of a shop lot, and say whether it rolls. The tow costs you nothing anywhere in the US.
- Leave it as it is. Resist parting out the 2ZZ-GE, the wheels or the converter first, and point out anything already sold off.
- Paperwork for the Celica: its title, signed in the seller's spot, and your photo ID. Each state's plate rule is in after you sell.
Questions people ask
- Which Celica model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2000 leads with 106 (our count of October 10, 2026), followed by the 2001 (47), the 1990 and 2002 (29 each) and the 1991 (27). Engine and cooling leads on the 2000 and 2001; air bags lead on the 1990-1992 cars and the 2002.
- Will Toyota cover oil burning on my 2000-2001 Celica?
- We found no Toyota program for oil use on the 1ZZ-FE or 2ZZ-GE engines. Toyota's engine sludge settlement listed 1997-1999 Celica four-cylinders, not the 2000-2005 cars, and its claim window closed eight years and 120 days after purchase.
- Is there an open air bag recall on a 1998 or 1999 Celica?
- Possibly. Recall 20V033, filed in January 2020, covers driver air bag inflators that can absorb moisture and rupture. You can check the steering wheel serial number yourself or have a Toyota dealer do it, and an affected inflator is replaced. A VIN search at nhtsa.gov/recalls is the place to begin.
- Do you buy a Celica that doesn't run or has sat for years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us how long it has been parked, whether the tires hold air and whether it rolls.
- Should I sell the wheels or the GT-S engine separately first?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits. Pulled parts lower the offer for what is left, so mention anything missing up front.
