Selling a Toyota Prius that won't go

A Prius that lights up the dash with warnings and won't move, or one with a failed inverter, still sells. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Each Prius generation fails in its own way

Complaint counts are reports owners filed with NHTSA, by model year, from files we downloaded on October 10, 2026.

Four more complaints are filed under model year 2000. With them, the total is 12,584.

2001-2003: steering trouble on the first cars

Steering is the top complaint area on all three early years. One 2002 owner wrote that the power steering "suddenly goes out". Toyota issued three recalls on these cars:

  • 00V285, 1,772 cars from 2001. A torque sensor in the electric steering could send bad signals. The warning icon lights and the wheel gets heavier.
  • 11V304, 52,377 cars from 2001-2003. The steering linkage could loosen and cut assist in left turns. Dealers replace the linkage nuts.
  • 06V266, 34,771 cars from 2001-2002. Engine oil could seep into the crankshaft position sensor's connector. Dealers replace the sensor.

2004-2009: the headlight years

This one generation holds 7,102 of the 12,584 complaints, and lights lead them. On the 2006, 888 of 1,439 complaints name exterior lighting. On the 2007 it is 976 of 2,003. Owners describe one headlight dying at random and both going dark at night.

NHTSA lists no headlight recall for these cars. Toyota's letter to owners of 2006-2009 cars with HID lamps says a bulb near the end of its life may "flicker or intermittently be inoperative." Toyota judged a new bulb to be the fix and paid back owners who had replaced the HID control unit.

The serious items on this generation are recalls:

  • 06V188, 170,856 cars from 2004-2006. The steering intermediate shaft and sliding yoke could crack and separate.
  • 12V537, 669,705 cars from 2004-2009. Splines on the steering extension shaft may be too soft and wear until steering fails. Dealers inspect the shaft and replace soft ones.
  • 12V536, 350,662 vehicles: 2004-2009 Prius plus FCHV-adv fuel cell vehicles built 2008-2011. A scratched coil wire in the electric water pump can corrode and stop the pump. One 2004 owner reported the inverter coolant pump quitting with no warning.
  • 04V558, 183,090 cars from 2004. Silicon oxide could build up inside the brake light switch and leave the brake lights dark.

2010: brakes, and the most complaints of any year

The 2010 has 2,829 complaints, more than any other Prius. Hydraulic brakes are named in 793, service brakes in 573 and electric brakes in 472. One complaint can name more than one of these, so the three numbers overlap. Owners describe ABS, brake and stability lights coming on with the pedal pressed, and a car that did not respond to the pedal.

Two recalls followed, both shared with the Lexus HS250h. 10V039 (148,549 vehicles) rewrote the ABS software after drivers felt uneven braking on rough or slick roads. 13V235 (87,060 vehicles, Prius built March to October 2009) replaced brake booster pumps that could leak nitrogen into the brake fluid.

2010-2015: the inverter

The third generation's costly failure is the inverter's Intelligent Power Module. Three recalls deal with it:

  • 14V053, 698,457 cars from 2010-2014. Heat can damage transistors in the module. The car can drop into limp mode or stall. Dealers update two control units.
  • 18V684, 807,329 vehicles: 2010-2014 Prius and 2012-2014 Prius v. Too much voltage in the module can shut the hybrid system down.
  • 20V369, 266,638 vehicles: 2013-2015 Prius and 2014-2017 Prius v that 18V684 missed, with the same fault.

All three remedies are software updates. Under 14V053 and 20V369, a car whose inverter already failed from the fault gets the inverter repaired or replaced free. If the module fails later, program ZE3 is the backstop. Toyota's terms read: "This warranty enhancement provides coverage for 15 years, regardless of mileage." The clock starts at first use. The earliest 2010 cars have reached 15 years, while 2013-2014 cars have some time left.

Recall 16V487 (482,002 vehicles, including 2010-2012 Prius, some Prius Plug-in Hybrids and the Lexus CT200h) adds brackets because a curtain air bag inflator weld can crack.

2016 and newer

The fourth generation has only 357 complaints across seven years. Windshield reports top the 2016, where 36 complaints name visibility. One owner watched a crack grow up from the bottom edge of the glass. Recall 16V741 clipped the parking brake cable on 91,585 cars from 2016-2017. Recall 18V579 covers 192,347 cars from 2016-2018 whose engine harness can rub through at the hybrid power control unit and short, which raises fire risk.

The fifth generation has 75 complaints. Its main recall: water can get into a rear door switch and short it, after which a closed rear door that isn't locked may swing open. Recall 26V049, filed in January 2026, replaces the earlier 24V274 and covers 141,286 vehicles across the 2023-2026 Prius, the 2023-2024 Prius Prime and the 2025-2026 Prius Plug-in Hybrid.

Complaints and recalls by model year

From NHTSA's files on October 10, 2026. "Crashes reported" means complaints where the owner said a crash happened. The recall column takes in each campaign NHTSA ties to the year, regional distributors' label recalls among them. One campaign can span many years, so recalls in grouped rows are counted once.

Should you fix it?

Set the repair quote next to what the Prius would bring running. When the two get close, selling it unrepaired is worth a look. Check these first:

  1. Recalls first. Type the VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls and bring anything open to a Toyota dealer.
  2. Inverter on a 2010-2014? Ask the dealer to check ZE3 against your VIN before you pay.
  3. Hybrid battery? From the 2020 model year, Toyota covers hybrid batteries for a decade or 150,000 miles, whichever ends sooner. Older model years got 8 years or 100,000 miles; on a 2015 or earlier Prius, the calendar alone has used that up.
  4. Car won't power up at all? Have a shop read the codes before you decide. Warning lights alone don't say which part failed. Our non-running car guide covers what to check.

We don't quote inverter or pack prices here. Get a written estimate.

Selling the whole Prius

  1. Gather the details: VIN, mileage, the warning lights you see, and whether it moves at all.
  2. Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the spot: a driveway, a street or a repair shop. Add whether the car can be pushed, since that decides which truck is sent.
  4. Leave the battery pack, converter and wheels on. Missing parts change the offer. If anything is already gone, say so.
  5. When the truck arrives, you sign the title over and show a photo ID. Whether the plates leave with you is a state matter, explained in after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Prius years drew the most complaints?
The 2010 leads: when we checked on October 10, 2026, NHTSA held 2,829 complaints on it, with brake parts named most. The 2007 is second (2,003), then the 2008 (1,497), the 2006 (1,439) and the 2005 (1,051). Exterior lighting is the top complaint on all four of those second-generation years.
My 2012 Prius shows a hybrid system warning and the inverter failed. Is it covered?
It may be. Toyota's Warranty Enhancement Program ZE3 covers failure of the inverter's Intelligent Power Module on certain 2010-2014 Prius for 15 years from the date of first use, with no mileage cap. Recall E0E has to be done first where it applies. A Toyota dealer can tell you from the VIN. Ask before you pay for an inverter or sell the car.
Is there a recall for Prius headlights that keep going out?
No. NHTSA lists no headlight recall for the 2004-2009 Prius. Toyota sent owners of 2006-2009 cars with HID lamps a letter saying a worn bulb can flicker or quit, and it paid back owners who had bought a new HID control unit. That program was reimbursement, not an extended warranty.
Will you buy a Prius with a dead hybrid battery?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes a Prius that won't power up. Tell us which warning lights are on, where it is parked and whether it can be pushed. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
Do I take out the hybrid pack or the converter before selling?
No. Sell the whole car as it sits. A missing battery pack, converter or wheel set lowers the offer, so leave them in place, and mention anything that was already taken off.
