Selling a junk or dead car in Renton
Renton's junk-vehicle chapter lets the city send the bill for clearing a wrecked or dead car off private land to whoever still holds the registration. Section 6-1-1 says those costs "may be first assessed against the last registered owner of the vehicle," so the paperwork matters as much as the tow. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US, Renton included.

Private land: notice first, then a hearing if you want one
Chapter 6-1 covers any "junk, wrecked, dismantled or an apparently inoperable vehicle, vehicle hulk, or parts thereof" sitting on private property in Renton. In Renton, no tow happens until the Police Chief, or someone the chief chooses, gives notice. Three people get it: whoever last registered the car, the legal owner on record, and the owner of the land underneath it.
If nobody asks for a hearing, or the Hearing Examiner orders the car out after one, it gets hauled off. Two exceptions:
- "completely enclosed within a building in a lawful manner where it is not visible from the street or other public or private real property"
- parked "on private real property zoned for and in connection with the business of a licensed dismantler or licensed vehicle dealer," behind fencing state law requires
Landowners have a faster route of their own. When a stranger's car turns up on private ground (city land excepted), the person in control can tow it to a police-designated garage at once, "irrespective of any time limits specified elsewhere in this Chapter."
Streets and city property: a 24-hour tag
Out on public pavement, Renton moves quickly. The Chief of Police is told to remove an abandoned car after a notice "has been posted on the vehicle or vehicle hulk for a period of not less than twenty four (24) hours" without a claim from the owner. A tow operator then holds it at the operator's own place of business, with a lien covering towing and storage.
After that, Washington's timetable runs. Five straight days (120 hours) in a registered tow operator's custody makes a car legally abandoned. An unclaimed one that wasn't stolen is auctioned once 15 days have passed from the mailing of the custody-and-sale notice. Already towed? Read towed or impounded.
Your paperwork when the car leaves Renton
The King County counter closest to Renton that we located is in Seattle, No. 201 South Jackson Street, Suite 206. Its number is (206) 477-4000. It is near 10 miles northwest of downtown Renton in a straight line. Titles for Washington's Department of Licensing (DOL) are handled by county auditors and subagent licensing offices, so there are more counters than this one.
The seller's list, in order:
- Sign off your interest on the title, then sign a bill of sale.
- Leave the notarizing to the buyer; Washington puts that step on the new owner's application.
- Report the sale to DOL within 5 days. DOL describes the report as protection against tow bills and legal trouble the next owner causes, the same exposure Renton's cost clause creates.
- Pull the plates off the Renton car. They stay yours and do not go to the buyer. Put them on a later car of the same kind or return them to the state.
After you sell has more on each step.

Questions people ask
- Could Renton bill me for towing away my old car?
- It can try. Section 6-1-1 lets abatement costs for a junk, wrecked or apparently inoperable vehicle on private land be assessed first against the last registered owner, when that person can be identified. A Renton seller who gets the Report of Sale to DOL in 5 days won't be stuck with the buyer's later tow bills.
- How quickly does Renton tow a dead car from a public street?
- Once a removal notice has stayed posted on it for 24 hours or more with no claim from the owner, the Chief of Police is to have it removed. A tow operator stores it and keeps a lien for towing and storage.
- Is a project car stored in my garage safe from Renton's rule?
- Yes, if it is fully inside a building, kept there lawfully, and hidden from the street and the neighbors. Fenced, properly zoned lots run by licensed dismantlers or dealers are exempt too.
