A dead car in Tumwater, before the tow lot

After a registered tow operator keeps a Tumwater car 120 hours straight, state law treats it as an "abandoned vehicle." Roughly two weeks after notice goes to the owners, it can go to public auction. We could not find Tumwater's municipal code online. The rules below come from state statute, and the city can still have local rules too. Before a car of yours reaches that point, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US, Tumwater included.

Expired tabs at the curb

The trip to an impound lot often starts with registration. Driving on lapsed tabs is a traffic infraction, and RCW 46.16A.030 adds that a car "with a registration expired more than 45 days parked on a public street may be impounded." We found no figure for the late-renewal penalty, so none is quoted here. A car that has sat at the curb since its tabs ran out can cross the 45-day line without anyone noticing.

How the tow-lot clock runs

After a tow, Washington sets these stages:

  • 120 hours. RCW 46.55.010 defines an abandoned vehicle as one a registered tow truck operator has impounded and kept for 120 consecutive hours.
  • 15 days. The towing company sends the registered and legal owners a notice of custody and sale. Counting from that mailing, fifteen days pass; a car that is not stolen and still unclaimed then heads to public auction.
  • 15 more days. Whoever wins it at auction gets 15 days to apply for a title.

Selling before the tow keeps you out of that chain entirely. Already towed to a lot? See towed or impounded for the next steps.

Junk vehicles on private land

A tow is not the only risk. Washington law calls a Tumwater car junk if any three of these fit: "three years old or older," "extensively damaged," "apparently inoperable," or only worth scrap. Local police, health departments and landowners run that process, and cities and counties are free to stack nuisance codes on top.

Title work and the report of sale

For Tumwater sellers, we found an office in Olympia at 3000 Pacific Ave SE, Suite 130. It is roughly 5 miles northeast of central Tumwater in a straight line.

Washington wants a report of sale whether the car was sold, traded, given away, handed to a charity, surrendered to an insurer, dropped at a wrecking yard or got rid of some other way. DOL says to file inside 5 days. A Tumwater seller starts by releasing interest on the title, then signs a bill of sale with the buyer or puts the price and date on the title. Your plates stay with you. The buyer's title application is the paper a notary or licensing clerk witnesses.

Questions people ask

Can a car with expired tabs be towed off a Tumwater street?
State law allows it once the registration has been expired more than 45 days and the car is parked on a public street. Driving on expired tabs is a traffic infraction on its own.
A tow lot has my Tumwater car. When does it go to auction?
After 120 consecutive hours in a registered tow operator's hands the car is legally abandoned. The operator then mails the owners a notice of custody and sale, and if nobody claims a car that is not stolen within 15 days of that mailing, it is auctioned.
Does Tumwater have its own junk-vehicle rules?
We could not locate the city's code online, so this page leans on Washington statute. The state lets cities pass their own nuisance codes, so check with Tumwater if a notice arrives.
