Selling a junk or dead car in Beloit

Beloit runs on short clocks. A junk vehicle may sit on a home or business lot for 48 hours, and one on a city street or lot gets 36 continuous hours. After that the city can tow it and bill the owner. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and the pickup is free anywhere in the US, Rock County included.

48 hours on your own lot

Section 7.23 says no owner or occupant shall park a junk vehicle, or let anyone else park one, "on the owner's or occupant's premises for more than 48 hours, unless the junk vehicle is parked in an enclosed building." Section 15.21 then allows a junk vehicle to be stored only "in an enclosed building and out of public view," or under a permit from the City Council. Off-street parking in general must be in an enclosed building or on a driveway or parking area that meets the chapter's standards.

36 hours on public ground

Under 13.14, a "partially dismantled, nonoperating, wrecked, unregistered or improperly registered or junk vehicle" may not be left on a street, park, public lot or other city property for more than 36 continuous hours without an official's permission. On private land, a car left 36 hours without the owner's permission is abandoned and a public nuisance.

Police move abandoned cars to impound. The owner, unless the car was stolen, pays for removing, impounding and disposing of it, plus a processing fee of $5 per day due to the city when the car is reclaimed or sold. Already towed? Our towed or impounded page explains the next steps.

When the Public Works Director declares a winter weather emergency, no vehicle may park or stand on any city street until it ends. The code says missing the news notice is no excuse, and whoever tows a car may hold it until the towing is paid.

Wisconsin title and plates

Beloit titles are state documents from WisDOT's motor vehicle division. A loan that still shows on one means the buyer must also get a release signed by that lender; see lien still on the title. Scrap-bound cars get Junk written on the title and can never be titled after that.

Keep the Wisconsin plates when the car goes. Put unexpired ones on a comparable car you have titled, or destroy them. After a person-to-person sale, the seller files Wisconsin's notice within 30 days, and a buyer who intends to drive it has two business days to get it titled and registered. Rock County lies outside the state's emissions-test area.

Questions people ask

How long can a junk car sit at my house in Beloit?
Forty-eight hours, unless it is parked in an enclosed building. Section 15.21 goes further and allows a junk vehicle to be stored only in an enclosed building out of public view, or under a City Council permit.
What does a city tow cost beyond the tow itself?
Besides towing and storage, Beloit adds a processing fee of $5 per day, paid to the city when the vehicle is reclaimed or sold.
What happens to a parked car in a Beloit snow emergency?
Once the Public Works Director declares a winter weather emergency, no vehicle may park or stand on any city street until it ends. A removed car can be held until the towing is paid.
