Selling an old or non-running Cadillac Eldorado
Owners have filed 18 complaints with NHTSA that mention a fire on the 1984 to 2002 Eldorado, and 9 of them are on a single year, the 1995. That year also has 17 complaints about the gasoline fuel system out of its 29. If your Eldorado is the one leaking fuel, sitting dead in a garage or wearing brakes you no longer trust, you can sell the whole car as it sits.

Which Eldorado you have
Wikipedia dates Eldorado production from 1952 to 2002 across twelve generations, and names the Cadillac CTS coupe as its successor. The EPA data this page uses starts in 1984, so it covers the end of the tenth generation (1979–1985), all of the eleventh (1986–1991) and the twelfth (1992–2002).
| Generation | Model years here | NHTSA complaints | Recall campaigns | What the recalls dealt with |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tenth | 1984-1985 | 3 | 3 | Seat back locks, window switches, cruise control bushing |
| Eleventh | 1986-1991 | 9 | 5 | Headlight control, floor mats, rear belt retractor, shift cable, front belt webbing |
| Twelfth | 1992-2002 | 190 | 10 | Steering bolt, fuel lines, throttle cable, oil cooler hose, gauge cluster, ABS module, air bags, tie rods, fuel rail |
NHTSA counts 19 campaigns in all. One of them is not itemized in our data, so it is missing from the rows above. No complaints are on file for the 1984, 1986 or 1987.
The 1992-2002 cars: fuel, wiring, brakes
Nearly all of the complaints sit in the twelfth generation, and the gasoline fuel system leads them. It is named in 44 complaints overall: 17 on the 1995, 9 on the 1996 and 10 on the 1997.
Two recalls line up with that. Recall 04V110000, reported in March 2004, covers 1995 to 1997 passenger cars with the 4.0-liter V8, because nylon tubing in the fuel rail may degrade and crack. NHTSA's notice adds that the 1995 uses its own underhood fuel return line. Dealers inspect the car and, if needed, fit a stainless steel fuel rail. The campaign counted 483,477 vehicles, and that figure covers other GM cars too, not only Eldorados. Earlier, recall 93V088000 found 1993 fuel feed and return lines that were not fully locked together and could work loose into a leak in the engine bay.
The 1996 is the electrical year: 11 of its 31 complaints. Recall 95V224000 says its analog instrument cluster could short inside, knocking out the Pass Key theft system, the gauges and the warning lights, and possibly leaving the car unable to start. That campaign counted 1,408 vehicles.
The 1997 has the most serious write-ups: 31 complaints that include 3 crashes and 5 injuries. Its recall, 97V064000, covers a brake control module that can make the anti-lock brakes cycle during an ordinary stop (156,910 vehicles in a campaign that may include other models). Hydraulic brake complaints keep coming after that, four apiece for the 1998 and 1999 Eldorado and five for the 2001.
Engine and engine cooling complaints, 35 in all, cluster late, with 8 on the 2000 and 5 on the 1999. The smaller twelfth-generation recalls:
- 1992: a steering coupling pinch bolt that may be missing (91V157000).
- 1993-1994: the A/C compressor clutch can rub through an oil cooler hose and leak engine oil (94V158000).
- 1994: the throttle cable can come loose from its bracket (93V164000).
- 1995: water getting into the air bag sensing module can set off the air bags (98V115000, 102,627 vehicles campaign-wide).
- 1998: a misrouted evaporative emissions harness, in a campaign that also took in hearses and limousines (97V183000).
- 2000: loose inner tie rod nuts that can let a tie rod separate (99V301000).
The 1984-1991 cars: few complaints, older recalls
Just 12 complaints cover all of these years together. The recalls matter more. The biggest, 89V102000, covers 1984-1985 cars whose cruise control bushing can slip and raise engine speed without warning, or keep the engine running after the key is off. It counted 1,755,897 vehicles, which plainly spans many GM models.
The rest: seat back locks on 1984 bucket seats that might let go in a crash; 1984-1985 window switches that can short and overheat when water drips on them; a 1986-1987 Twilight Sentinel headlight control with intermittent contacts; 1986 floor mats that could interfere with the gas pedal; and on the 1990, a rear belt retractor and a shift cable that can come off the floor shifter. The 1990-1991 front shoulder belts can also stick in the retractor (95V110000).

Repair it or let it go?
Begin by putting the Eldorado's VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup, then ask a Cadillac dealer about anything still open. On a 1995-1997 that smells of gas, check the fuel rail campaign before anything else, and the car is better parked than driven until you know.
After that it is plain math. Price the repair in writing, then hold it up against what a running Eldorado of your year and condition sells for. A 1996 that won't start with dead gauges may be the cluster; see electrical problems before writing it off. An Eldorado that has sat for a decade wants more than a jump start, and sitting for years covers what to check. If the quote outruns the value, repairs cost more than it is worth walks through the choice.
Selling the Eldorado whole
- Write down the Eldorado's VIN and odometer reading, plus the trouble and whether it rolls and steers.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it sits. Garage, carport, side yard or shop lot; flat tires and narrow driveways are worth a mention, since they decide which truck comes.
- Leave it in one piece. If the convertible top, wheels or trim came off already, list them; a stripped Eldorado gets a different offer.
- At pickup, the driver takes the title and keys. No title? Start with selling with no title. For plates and insurance afterward, see after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which Eldorado years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1996 and 1997 tie at 31 apiece in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 count. Behind them sit the 1995 (29) and the 2000 (23). Every other year from 1984 to 2002 has 18 or fewer.
- My 1995-1997 Eldorado smells of fuel. Is there a recall?
- Recall 04V110000 covers passenger cars from 1995 to 1997 with the 4.0-liter V8, for nylon fuel rail tubing that may degrade and crack. Dealers inspect and, if needed, fit a stainless steel fuel rail. An Eldorado VIN typed into nhtsa.gov/recalls shows whether that repair was ever done.
- Will you buy an Eldorado that hasn't run in years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention the years in storage, any flat tires, and the Eldorado's spot: garage, carport or yard.
- Do I need to strip anything before I sell it?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits, convertible top, wheels and all. Already pulled the radio or a wheel? Note it on the Eldorado offer request.
