Selling an old Cadillac Seville as it sits

More than half of all Seville complaints sit on the 1992-1997 cars: 410 of the 794 in NHTSA's owner file through October 10, 2026. The 1996 alone has 122, more than any other year.

The Seville by generation

Our data covers the 1984 to 2004 model years, which Wikipedia spreads over four generations. Vehicle totals for recalls span each full campaign, and several reached other GM cars too.

1984-1991: few complaints, older recalls

The 1984 and 1985 are the end of the second generation, a front-drive car built in Linden, New Jersey. The third generation, 1986 to 1991, came from Hamtramck, Michigan, with 4.1, 4.5 and 4.9-liter V8s. Together these years hold 85 complaints.

Speed control leads the 1990, with 8 of 19. Recall 89V102 replaced a cruise control bushing on 1984-1985 cars that could slip and raise engine speed; that campaign covers 1,755,897 vehicles. 87V082 swapped floor mats on 1986 cars that could catch the gas pedal, and 90V164 added a clip to 1990 cars whose shift cable could come off the floor shifter.

1992-1997: fuel, cooling and the peak

Wikipedia lists the 4.9-liter HT-4900 V8 for the fourth generation. These six years are where the file thickens. Engine and engine cooling leads the 1994 (20 of 50) and 1996 (22 of 122). The fuel system leads the 1993 (9) and 1995 (20) and ties for first on the 1997 (14).

The recalls line up with that. 93V088 checked fuel lines on 1993 cars that could work loose and leak in the engine bay. 94V158 strapped the auxiliary oil cooler hose on 1993-1994 cars, where the air conditioning clutch could wear through it. NHTSA lists 04V110 for 1995-1997 cars: nylon fuel rail tubing that can crack, in a campaign that names 4.0-liter V8s and counts 483,477 vehicles.

The 1996 also had 95V224: an instrument cluster that could short and upset the Pass Key system, leaving dead gauges and possibly a no-start. Only 1,408 vehicles were in it. On 1997 Sevilles, the ABS could kick in during an ordinary stop, so recall 97V064 put in new brake control modules.

1998-2004: the last Sevilles

The fifth generation moved to GM's G platform with a 4.6-liter V8. Wikipedia says Seville STS production ended on May 16, 2003, and the SLS ended on December 4, 2003, so the 2004 was sold only as an SLS. The STS name took over for 2005.

These years hold 299 complaints. Engine cooling leads the 1998 (18) and 1999 (19), and suspension leads the 2002 (9). Recall 99V070 replaced generators on 1998-1999 cars that could short even with the engine off. Some 2000 Sevilles got loose inner tie rod nuts tightened under 99V301. Under 03V238, 2002-2003 Sevilles and DeVilles with the 4.6 V8 got new fuel tank pressure sensors.

Before you pay for repairs

A Seville this old is usually worth less than a big engine job. Get the quote, look up what a running one brings, and compare.

  1. Overheating? Engine and engine cooling is the Seville's most-named component, at 148. See head gasket or overheating.
  2. Fuel smell on a 1993-1997? Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup for 93V088 and 04V110.
  3. Dead gauges and no start on a 1996? Ask whether 95V224 was done; the engine may be fine.
  4. Repair bigger than the car? See repairs cost more than it is worth.

Seville complaints and recalls by model year

The Seville counts reflect NHTSA's owner complaint file on October 10, 2026. The last Sevilles have had a shorter run of years for owners to write in. A recall cell counts every campaign naming that year, so a three-year campaign like 04V110 shows up in three rows.

Selling your Seville whole

  1. Find the title. If it's lost or still in a late owner's name, sort that out early.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Explain how long it has been parked and what's around it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Don't strip the Seville. The wheels and the converter should stay on.
  5. Have the title, keys and your ID out when the driver comes. After you sell covers plates and insurance.

Will you buy a Seville that hasn't run in years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and there is free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention soft tires or a car hemmed in by others when you ask.
