Selling a junk or non-running Cadillac XLR
Of the 80 complaints in NHTSA's file on the Cadillac XLR, 34 are on the 2004 model year alone. The 2004 has 34 and the 2005 has 31. After that the file nearly goes quiet: 15 complaints across 2006 to 2009.

The XLR is a two-seater built at Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Wikipedia lists the C5 Chevrolet Corvette as its relative. If fixing yours no longer adds up, sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
One generation, 2004 to 2009
Wikipedia gives production as 2003 to 2009 and says it ended on March 31, 2009. Wikipedia lists the 4.6-liter Northstar V8, GM's Y-body platform, and 5-speed 5L50 and 6-speed 6L80 automatics. The EPA lists two versions, the XLR and the XLR-V.
2004-2005: structure complaints and all four recalls
NHTSA files 25 of the 80 complaints under "structure", the top category overall. Of those, 24 sit on these two years: 11 on the 2004 and 13 on the 2005. The category name alone does not say which part owners wrote about. Exterior lighting (4 and 3) and the gasoline fuel system (4 and 3) come next.
Every recall campaign falls in these years:
- 04V273 (2004): lower control arm ball stud washers made of the wrong material could crack and fall away. Dealers were to inspect the ball joints and check nut torque. The 41,928 count covers every vehicle in the campaign, which named "certain passenger vehicles", so not all of it is XLRs.
- 04V525 (2004-2005): rear brake lines could touch, or take heat from, the left exhaust manifold and pipe. 5,225 vehicles in the campaign.
- 05V046 (2004): with one of two accelerator pedal return springs broken, the pedal did not meet the federal standard at very low temperatures. Dealers replaced the pedal assembly. The notice gives both a Cadillac and a Pontiac phone line, so its 19,924 vehicles go beyond the XLR.
- 06V263 (2004-2005): the daytime running light, turn signal and parking lamp share one bulb, which could be damaged in a loose socket. Dealers replaced the socket and bulb on both sides. 7,689 vehicles in the campaign. It lines up with the lighting complaints above.
2006-2009: a thin file
The 2006 has 9 complaints, power train leading with 3, and the only fire report on any XLR. The 2007 has 2, the 2008 has 3 and the 2009 has 1. No recall campaign lists these years.
Complaints and recalls by model year
XLR complaint tallies, snapshot of October 10, 2026. The later cars are younger, which gave owners less time to write in. A single recall may list both 2004 and 2005.
| Model year | Complaints | Top component | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2004 | 34 | Structure (11) | 4 |
| 2005 | 31 | Structure (13) | 2 |
| 2006 | 9 | Power train (3) | 0 |
| 2007-2009 | 6 | - | 0 |
Repair it, or let it go?
Plug the VIN into NHTSA's recall search to see whether any of the four campaigns was never done on your car. Then get a written repair quote and check it against the selling price of a running XLR like yours. If those figures come out close, repairs cost more than it is worth helps you decide. For a Northstar that has quit, see blown engine. If the car has been parked for seasons, read sitting for years.
Selling the XLR whole
- Note the VIN, the mileage, whether it is an XLR or XLR-V, and what is wrong.
- Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the spot it's parked in, if the wheels turn, and if the roof is open, so the driver knows what to bring.
- Keep the XLR in one piece; if anything is already off it, say so, since that changes the offer.
- Pickup needs the title and a photo ID. Lost the title? Read selling with no title. Plate and insurance steps are in after you sell.
