Selling a Cadillac Allante that no longer runs right

Brakes are the Allante story. Owners have sent NHTSA 196 complaints on the 1987 to 1993 roadster, and 153 name the hydraulic service brakes, with another 19 filed under air service brakes. Structure, a distant second, has 6.

So an Allante with a soft pedal, a brake warning lit or a V8 silent for years is in common company. You can sell the whole car as it sits: we buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

A Cadillac built on two continents

Wikipedia says Pininfarina built the Allante's body in San Giorgio Canavese, Italy, and final assembly took place at Detroit/Hamtramck. The bodies crossed by air, an operation known as the "Allanté Air Bridge". Wikipedia ties that costly shipping to GM's recent closing of Fisher Body Plant #18, which had supplied Cadillac bodies since 1921.

It was a two-seat luxury roadster on GM's V-body; Wikipedia gives the layout as transverse front-engine, front-wheel drive. Its new-car warranty ran seven years and 100,000 miles, three years longer than other Cadillacs. Even the 1993s are well past it now. Production ended on July 16, 1993, and the XLR followed it.

The three engines, and where the complaints fall

Wikipedia lists three V8s, and the brake complaints track the first two almost entirely.

1987-1992: the brake years

Every year from 1987 to 1992 has the hydraulic brakes as its top complaint, from 17 on the 1988 and 1992 to 34 on both the 1989 and 1990. With 40, the 1990 tops every Allante year, and two of its complaints report a crash. Neither of the Allante's two recalls deals with brakes, so a brake complaint here has no campaign behind it to check.

The one recall in these years is small. Campaign 88V072000 covered 538 vehicles from 1988, where the pressure relief valve in the fuel cap may stick open. The remedy was a new fuel cap.

1993: the Northstar year

The last Allante changes the pattern. Its 9 complaints are led by the electrical system (3), with structure and the hydraulic brakes at 1 each. Two of the 9 mention a fire. Wikipedia puts 1993 production at 4,670, with 85 shipped to Canada and 30 exported overseas.

The 1993 recall, 94V158000, warns that the A/C compressor clutch may wear a hole in the auxiliary engine oil cooler outlet hose and leak oil in the engine bay. Dealers fitted a tie strap to hold the hose clear. That campaign counted 56,269 vehicles, more than ten times the Allantes built that year, so most of them were other Cadillacs.

Fix it or sell it?

An Allante with brake trouble is a judgment call. Get a written quote from someone who has worked on this car before, then compare it with what a running Allante of your year sells for. Our bad brakes guide explains how to weigh it.

A few more things to check first:

  • Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 1988 or 1993, the two campaigns above are the ones to look for.
  • Stored for years? Fluids, tires and the top can all go off in storage. See sitting for years.
  • Half-finished restoration? Old project car covers selling one before you sink more into it.

Selling your Allante whole

  1. Note the Allante's VIN and miles, then name the trouble plainly: brakes, engine, electrical or all three.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the parking spot and whether the wheels turn. A two-seater with a locked-up brake can still be winched onto a truck; the driver just needs to know.
  4. Keep it complete. Leave the hardtop, the wheels and the trim on. Already missing a piece? Put it in the request.
  5. When the Allante is collected, hand over its title and any keys, and show photo ID. No title? See selling with no title.

Questions people ask

What do Allante owners complain to NHTSA about most?
The brakes. As of October 10, 2026, 153 of the 196 complaints name the hydraulic service brakes and 19 more are filed under air service brakes. Structure comes next, with 6.
Is the 1993 Allante different?
Yes. Wikipedia lists the 4.6-liter L37 Northstar V8 for 1993 only, after the 4.1 (1987-1988) and the 4.5 (1989-1992). The 1993 also has far fewer complaints: 9, with only 1 about the hydraulic brakes.
Will you take an Allante with a dead engine or no working brakes?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us if it rolls and if the top still closes.
