Selling a non-running car in Carlsbad
A missing title does not have to sink the sale of a dead car in Carlsbad. California uses one form, REG 227, both to replace a lost certificate and to pass ownership along, so the paperwork can be rebuilt before or during the sale. This page found no Carlsbad junk-vehicle ordinance online; treat what follows as state law, and expect that the city could set extra rules.

Rebuilding the title
Take REG 227 to a DMV field office or mail it in. The charge is $28 under Vehicle Code 9265, and the DMV says a new certificate typically lands in the mailbox 15-30 days later. A notary enters an ordinary California sale in only one spot: section 5 of REG 227, when a bank or other legal owner still shows on the DMV record. A loan that is not yet paid off gets its own page, still owe on the loan, and the wider paperwork is in selling with no title.
When no ownership papers survive
Sometimes nothing is left: no title, no registration card. The DMV's junking procedures handle that case with a value test. Under $5,000, no bond is needed. Carlsbad owners mail REG 256 with whatever ownership proof they hold. For Carlsbad, the Statement of Facts lists what the car is worth, who sold it to you, and that no lien exists. From $5,000 up, a motor vehicle bond takes the statement's place. Those figures are the DMV's dividing line for paperwork, not an offer.
Brands on a California title
Seven brand words can appear on a California certificate. The one a crashed Carlsbad car is likely to carry is Salvaged, which the DMV applies to accident, flood and vandalism damage alike, and to cars once dismantled; flood has no brand of its own. California sets no damage percentage. When the owner or insurer of a Carlsbad car decides repairs aren't worth the cost, it counts as total loss salvage, and a salvage certificate replaces the title. A car declared nonrepairable, whether burned out, stripped to the shell or kept only for parts or scrap, can never carry a title again. More in salvage title.
Handing it over
When a Carlsbad seller has the title, they sign it, any lender on it signs as well, and the buyer turns it in. Then file REG 138 for your Carlsbad sale within 5 days, online or by post. Tickets and lawsuits from the sale date forward belong to the new owner. Standard plates stay on the car. Vanity and special plates can be moved to your next car for a fee. When the buyer plans to dismantle or wreck the car, a Carlsbad seller owes no smog certificate.

Questions people ask
- I lost the title to my dead car in Carlsbad. Can I still sell it?
- Yes. California's REG 227 serves both to replace a lost certificate and to move ownership to someone else. It costs $28, and the DMV puts the mailing time for a new title at 15-30 days in most cases.
- Is a notary part of a California title transfer?
- Not for the ordinary signing; the DMV's private-sale steps leave it out. The exception is section 5 of REG 227, which needs a notary when a lender or other legal owner appears on the record.
- Can Carlsbad cite me for a dead car in my own driveway?
- Possibly. Every California city may pass its own abatement ordinance under Vehicle Code 22660. No Carlsbad version turned up online for this page, so check with the city.
