Selling a junk car in Elk Grove
Elk Grove owners of a towed dead car face a state deadline. Once a tow yard mails its notice, the lien sale comes 31 to 41 days later, and you have 10 days to oppose it. Elk Grove's own code did not surface in our search, so state law fills this page, and Elk Grove may keep rules we could not read. Still in your driveway? We buy whole non-running and junk cars.

Elk Grove's own rules
Elk Grove has 185,007 residents in Sacramento County. Under Vehicle Code 22660, every California city may adopt a nuisance ordinance for these cars and recover what removal costs. No Elk Grove text turned up to quote. Before treating a car on your own Elk Grove lot as safe under state law alone, ask the city.
When an Elk Grove car leaves on a hook
- Curb time. Under Vehicle Code 22651, a car parked beyond 72 consecutive hours against a local ordinance can be towed.
- Tow liens. Civil Code 3068.1 gives an Elk Grove tow yard a possessory lien. Civil Code 3072 covers an Elk Grove car worth $4,000 or less, and the sale has to start within 15 days of the lien. Storage can run 60 days, sometimes 120. Pricier cars fall under Civil Code 3071.
- Ten days to object. A Declaration of Opposition must be returned within 10 days. Do that and you get a court hearing.
- The leftover bill. Under Vehicle Code 22523, an abandoned car impounded and left unclaimed leaves its last registered owner facing an infraction plus any deficiency after the sale, unless that owner filed a report of sale.
That last point is why prompt REG 138 filing matters. To get a car back from a lot, see towed or impounded.
Years of lapsed registration
Plenty of Elk Grove junkers have sat in side yards for years. Each year an Elk Grove car went unregistered brings DMV fees and penalties, unless a Planned Non-Operation (REG 102) covered that year. Better to know that before a sale.
Salvage and brands in Elk Grove
California prints seven title brands, and "Salvaged" is the usual one for a junk car. It spans accident, flood and vandalism damage and previously dismantled cars, with no separate flood brand. There is no percentage test for total-loss salvage. It means the owner or insurer in Elk Grove decided the repairs weren't worth paying for, so a salvage certificate replaces the title. A nonrepairable car, such as one fully burned, may never get a title again. See salvage title.
Signing the title over
- In Elk Grove, the California Certificate of Title needs the seller's signature and any lienholder's. An Elk Grove seller can skip the notary. DMV's seller steps don't ask for one.
- Elk Grove sellers have five days to send REG 138, using dmv.ca.gov/nrl or the paper version.
- Regular plates normally stay with an Elk Grove car, unless it's recorded as Junk. Then the plates go back.
- Wrecking or dismantling transfers skip the Smog Check.
Lost title? REG 227 starts it; see junk car with no title.

Getting an offer
