Selling a dead or junk car in Rancho Cucamonga
We searched for Rancho Cucamonga's municipal code on junk cars and came up empty, so everything below comes from California law, which covers the city like any other. The state leaves room for more. Vehicle Code 22660 lets every city or county, Rancho Cucamonga included, pass a nuisance ordinance for wrecked, abandoned or broken-down vehicles and recover what it spends hauling them off. The city may well have one, so ask before assuming you have time. Or skip the question: we buy whole non-running and junk cars, you sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

California's clocks for a car on the street
- 72 hours. Rancho Cucamonga street parking past three straight days breaks a local ordinance, and Vehicle Code 22651 then permits a tow.
- No wait at all. Vehicle Code 22669 lets an officer, or a city worker assigned the task, tow at once a car on a Rancho Cucamonga public right-of-way that lacks key parts like an engine, transmission, wheels, tires, doors or windshield.
- Cheap cars. Vehicle Code 22851.3 covers abandoned cars valued at $500 or less. Rancho Cucamonga tags the car 72 hours ahead of removal. The exception is a car taken under 22669(d) that is worth $300 or less. Once a Rancho Cucamonga car is towed, the owner hears within 48 hours and may request a hearing inside 10 days. In Rancho Cucamonga, disposal of the car may happen 15 days after the notice. Those dollar limits are legal tests, not what your car is worth.
Walking away from a car is its own offense. Vehicle Code 22523 forbids dumping a car on a Rancho Cucamonga street. The same goes for another person's land, unless they agree. Fines run from $100 up, and you also need proof the removal costs were paid.
When a tow yard already has it
Under Civil Code 3068.1, the tow or storage company has a lien it can hold the car against. Civil Code 3072 governs cars valued at $4,000 or less. The Rancho Cucamonga yard starts the lien sale and mails a Notice of Pending Lien Sale within 15 days. Then 31 to 41 days pass before the Rancho Cucamonga auction. Rancho Cucamonga owners get 10 days to mail a "Declaration of Opposition" and ask for a court hearing. An abandoned Rancho Cucamonga car left unclaimed through that sale puts its last registered owner in violation, an infraction. Any deficiency is theirs to pay too, unless they filed a report of sale. Towed or impounded explains the options.
Registration that lapsed while it sat
Years off the road don't erase registration. The DMV bills each lapsed year, penalties included, unless a Planned Non-Operation (PNO, REG 102) was on file. Check before you sell; car sitting for years goes through it.
Selling: title, smog and plates
Every California title change goes through the state DMV; San Bernardino County has no title counter of its own. A Rancho Cucamonga title gets signed by the seller and any lender. The buyer then turns it in and pays the $15 fee. The DMV lists no notary step for this. Send REG 138, the release of liability, to DMV no later than 5 days after your Rancho Cucamonga sale. Once the DMV has it on record, parking tickets and traffic liability fall to the buyer.
San Bernardino County appears on the DMV's partial-biennial smog list, which splits areas by ZIP code. A junk sale sidesteps all of that, because cars sold for wrecking or dismantling don't need the inspection. Plates on a standard registration stay with the car. To replace a lost title, file REG 227 and pay $28. It usually takes 15 to 30 days for the new copy to come by mail.

Questions people ask
- Does Rancho Cucamonga have its own junk-car ordinance?
- We didn't find one published online. Every California city may adopt rules like these under Vehicle Code 22660, so check with the city in case one applies.
- Can a dead car sit on a Rancho Cucamonga street?
- Not for long. State law allows a tow after 72 hours where a local ordinance limits street storage. Rancho Cucamonga can tow at once any car left on a public right-of-way without its engine, wheels or other needed parts.
- Do years of lapsed registration have to be paid before a sale?
- For every year the car sat unregistered, the DMV bills that year and penalties too, except when a Planned Non-Operation (PNO, REG 102) was on file.
- What if the tow yard keeps my car and I ignore it?
- Civil Code 3072 lets a car worth $4,000 or less be sold for the lien 31 to 41 days after notice is sent. If the car was abandoned and goes unredeemed, its last registered owner can owe the deficiency, unless a report of sale was filed.
