South Gate junk and non-running car sales
South Gate squeezes 90,071 residents onto just 7.237 square miles, and Lynwood and Cudahy each sit only 1.5 miles off. A car that quits on a South Gate street is never far from a city line. For worn-out cars of little value, state law runs a faster removal track, and that is the part worth knowing. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Low-value cars: the fast track
We couldn't find South Gate's vehicle rules posted online. Because Vehicle Code 22660 leaves private-property nuisance rules to each city, ask South Gate directly if a notice has arrived. The state rules below hold regardless.
Vehicle Code 22851.3 sets out these steps for a South Gate abandoned car worth $500 or under:
- Before the tow: South Gate puts a notice on the car 72 hours in advance. A South Gate car worth $300 or less taken under Vehicle Code 22669(d) skips that step.
- After the tow: notice must reach the owner no later than 48 hours later.
- Disposal: once 15 days pass from that notice, the car can be gotten rid of.
- Objecting: South Gate owners get 10 days to request a hearing.
In South Gate, Vehicle Code 22669 allows immediate removal from a public right-of-way of a car without its wheels, engine, doors, tires, windshield or transmission.
About two weeks is not much time to sort out a title, so selling before any notice shows up is the safer order.
The registration that lapsed years ago
Plenty of South Gate cars stop running and then stop being registered. The state keeps counting anyway. In South Gate, each lapsed registration year adds DMV fees and penalties. A Planned Non-Operation (REG 102) filed for that time is the exception. With a long gap, ask the DMV what the car owes before you set a sale date.
Signing it over
- Title. For a South Gate sale, the California Certificate of Title needs your signature and any listed lender's. It's the buyer who files it and pays $15. There's no notary in the DMV's steps for sellers.
- Missing title. REG 227 is the starting form, at $28. See junk car with no title.
- Smog. Transfers to a wrecker or dismantler skip the inspection.
- REG 138. You have five days from the handover to report it, online or with the mailed form. That shifts later tickets and claims to the buyer.
- Plates. Standard California plates usually stay with a South Gate car. They go back to the DMV if you record the car as junk yourself.

Getting an offer
Online or at (877) 421-6008, describe the car: year, make, model, mileage, if it starts, and how long the registration has been lapsed. The driver can pick it up on a side street off Long Beach Boulevard, from a back driveway, or at a repair shop.
Questions people ask
- Will I get a warning before an old car is hauled away in South Gate?
- Usually. In South Gate, Vehicle Code 22851.3 says an abandoned car worth $500 or under must carry a 72-hour notice before it is removed. South Gate's exception is a car valued at $300 or under that is removed under Vehicle Code 22669(d). South Gate's own code was not online, so the city may add rules.
- The car was removed. How long before it is gone for good?
- For a low-value car, the owner must hear about the removal inside 48 hours. A South Gate car may be disposed of fifteen days after that notice. South Gate owners get 10 days to request a hearing.
- The registration expired years ago. Do I owe back fees to sell it?
- Most likely yes, unless your South Gate car had a Planned Non-Operation (REG 102) for those years. If none was filed, every lapsed year brings DMV fees and penalties.
