We found no GM extended coverage for the Celebrity, so it comes down to one comparison: the shop's estimate versus what a running Celebrity means to you.

Which Celebrity do you have?

Chevrolet built the Celebrity for model years 1982 to 1990 on GM's front-drive A-body. The sedan ended after 1989, when the Lumina took its place; the wagon, added for 1984, lasted one year longer. The two-door was dropped after 1988.

EngineYearsNotes
2.5 four1982-1990Standard; balance shafts from 1988
2.8 V61982-1989Carbureted at first; the H.O. version got multiport injection for 1985, and only the injected one was left from 1987
4.3 diesel V61982-1985Dropped for 1986
3.1 V61990Wagon only, replacing the 2.8

A three-speed automatic was there from the start. A four-speed overdrive automatic and a four-speed manual came for 1984, and a five-speed manual was offered on the V6 for 1987-1988. Celebrities came out of Oklahoma City; Framingham, Mass.; Fremont, Calif. (1982); Oshawa, Ont.; Sainte-Thérèse, Que.; and Ramos Arizpe, Mexico.

Steering that locks up

NHTSA holds 185 complaints on 1984-1990 Celebrities, plus one filed under 1991, after the car had ended. Thirteen crashes, five fires and two deaths are reported in them. Steering is the component named most, 33 times, with 10 each on the 1987 and 1988.

Owners describe the wheel freezing in place. One 1987 report reads "THE STEERING LOCKS UP WHILE DRIVING ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS COLD"; a 1986 owner wrote that the rack and pinion "LOCKS IN POSITION." No recall covers that. The nearest is 88V048 (April 1988): a front lower control arm bracket on 1988 cars that could crack, letting the arm come free with no warning. Dealers inspected the cars and swapped the engine cradle on suspect ones; the campaign listed 3,428 vehicles.

The other ten recalls

  • Fuel leaks: 85V034 for 1984 cars, a throttle body injection feed pipe that could leak and start an underhood fire (121,095 vehicles); 88V164 for 1988, a feed hose coupling with the same risk (27,369).
  • Headlights: 86V056 and 86V131, a push-pull switch on 1986 cars whose contacts could let the lights flicker or go dark. Together they listed 199,428 vehicles.
  • Brakes: 84V052 and 85V135, a clutch cable on a few hundred 1984-1985 cars that could rub through the brake pipe.
  • Throttle: 84V132, 1985 linkage that could bind and keep the throttle open (2,130 vehicles).
  • Seats and belts: 84V011, 1984 seat back locks (76,586); 92V124, 1990 power seat wiring that could chafe, short and set the cushion on fire (319,181); and 95V173, rear outboard belt anchorages on 1989-1990 cars, in a campaign of 2,216,325 vehicles across GM's A-car lines.

Complaints and recalls by model year

From NHTSA files downloaded October 10, 2026. 95V173 counts in both 1989 and 1990.

Worth fixing?

At 36 to 44 years old, a Celebrity rarely earns a big repair unless it means something to you. A few rules hold either way:

  1. Smell fuel under the hood? Don't start it. Two of the eleven recalls were for fuel leaks that could turn into fires.
  2. Steering that binds or locks? Don't drive it to a shop; have it towed.
  3. Want to know if a campaign was done? Ask a Chevrolet dealer to look up the VIN, or try nhtsa.gov/recalls.

If it has been parked for years, car sitting for years covers what usually goes wrong.

Selling the Celebrity

  1. Copy the VIN (look through the windshield at the driver's side of the dash), then note the odometer reading and what doesn't work.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where it sits: a barn, a backyard, a carport. Mention flat tires, and whether the Celebrity will roll.
  4. Keep it whole, wheels and catalytic converter included. Tell us about anything already removed.
  5. On pickup day, have the title and your photo ID. Lost the title? See the no-title guide. For plates and insurance, read after you sell.

Questions people ask

What are the most common complaints on a Chevrolet Celebrity?
Steering, with 33 of the 185 complaints NHTSA holds for the 1984-1990 cars. Owners describe the steering locking up, one of them especially in cold weather. Engine and cooling (24), electrical (21) and seat belts (19) come next.
Was there ever a steering recall on the Celebrity?
Not for the lock-up reports. The only steering-related campaign is 88V048, for a lower control arm bracket on 1988 cars that could crack and let the arm come loose. Dealers inspected the cars and replaced the engine cradle where needed.
Did the Celebrity come with a diesel?
Yes, a 4.3-liter diesel V6 was optional from the start, and fueleconomy.gov still lists it for 1985. It was dropped for 1986.
Will you buy a Celebrity that hasn't run in years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention the years it's been parked, the state of the tires, and its location.
