The record tells you where to look first. On the first-generation car, 700 of the 1,490 complaints filed with NHTSA name the hydraulic brakes. Two recalls cover cradle bolts pulling through corroded retainers on cars from the states each one lists. And the 1998-1999 cars with the 3.8 V6 carry a valve cover recall for oil reaching the hot exhaust manifold.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Counted by us from NHTSA's raw complaint and recall records for the Lumina, current to October 10, 2026. The brake column counts complaints that list the hydraulic service brakes; one complaint can list more than one part of the car. A campaign that covers several model years appears in each one.

Brakes top the list on every year from 1990 to 1994. The leader then shifts with the car: visibility on the 1995 (79 complaints), steering on the 1997 and 1998 (79 and 53), and engine and engine cooling on the 1999 (39 of 103).

Two Luminas: 1990-1994 and 1995-2001

GM Canada assembled every Lumina sedan and coupe at Oshawa, Ontario. The car took over from both the Celebrity and the Monte Carlo. The Lumina APV minivan is a separate vehicle with its own page.

Automatics were the three-speed 3T40 and the four-speed 4T60 and 4T60-E. The Z34 coupe teamed a 210 hp 3.4 with a Getrag five-speed manual. Retail sales stopped in Canada in 1999 and in the US one year later, which is why the 2001 cars were built for rental fleets.

1990-1994: belts, bolts, wheels and brakes

The early cars mounted the front shoulder belts in the doors, and three recalls followed. Recall 90V054 (March 1990) dealt with a guide loop fastener that could pull through the anchor plate in the door; its campaign counts 673,000 vehicles. Recall 91V005 added a controlled-rotation bracket because the webbing could separate at the upper guide loops. Recall 92V003 covered cracked guide loops on the 1991; the fix added reinforcing plates to them.

Salt is the second story. Under 97V058, filed in April 1997, the rear cradle bolts on 1990-1991 cars can pull through retainers weakened by corrosion. It applies in 14 states, among them Michigan, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. In July 2000, 00V189 brought the same trouble at the front bolts in more road-salt states and DC, and dealers replace the front and rear bolts and retainers. Both totals, 676,535 and 713,435, are campaign-wide counts, and the first names GM minivans as well.

On the 1990, cracks can grow in the wheel's mounting surface until the wheel comes off. Under 94V041 and 95V115, dealers read the date code stamped on each wheel and swapped any in the affected range.

Then the brakes. The 1990 stoplamp switch recall, 90V185, could leave the brake lights dark or let cruise control resume after the pedal was let up. Still, no recall or GM program we found accounts for 700 brake complaints across these five years.

1995-2001: wipers, steering and the 3.8

The 1995 has 79 visibility complaints, and its wipers are the subject of recall 97V017. A strained or separated power feed wire at the wiper and washer switch can make the wipers work only now and then, or stop. Dealers fit a redesigned switch; that campaign counts 349,331 cars.

Steering complaints peak on the 1997 and 1998. Recall 03V527, from December 2003, says some power steering racks left the factory with poorly crimped retainer tabs at the lower pinion bearing, so its balls can get loose. Dealers install a new bearing, or a whole gear assembly when the inspection calls for one. Its 750,283 vehicles span several GM cars.

Luminas with the 3.8, built May 22, 1997 to April 8, 1999, have two engine fire recalls. Under 09V116, oil can drip onto the hot exhaust manifold; dealers fit a front valve cover and gasket of an improved design, and remove both the plastic cover over the engine and the extension on the oil-fill tube. In October 2015, 15V701 called back cars already fixed under that recall and two related ones for a better remedy. Those campaigns count 1,497,516 and 1,003,556 vehicles because they also include the Impala, Monte Carlo, Buick Regal, Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Intrigue.

GM's Dex-Cool class settlement listed 1995-2001 Luminas with the 3.1 or 3.4 V6, and those with the 3.8, among cars whose cooling-system and intake gasket repairs it would pay back for the first seven years or 150,000 miles. The notice required claims "postmarked no later than October 27, 2008," and nothing is paid out today.

Worth fixing?

Start with recalls, then a quote.

  • Look the VIN up at NHTSA's recall lookup. If a 1990-1991 car spent its life in a salt state, ask a Chevrolet dealer whether the cradle bolt work was ever done.
  • Rust found under the car? If a shop says the cradle area or brake lines have rotted, put that estimate next to what a running Lumina sells for near you. A big gap between the two is your answer.
  • Engine won't turn over after years parked? Our guides on a car that has sat for years and a blown engine cover what to check before paying for repairs.

Getting it picked up whole

  1. List the VIN, the last mileage you saw, and every fault you know about.
  2. Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the spot: a backyard, a carport, a curb or a shop lot. Flat tires, a missing key or a car boxed in by others all matter for loading. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it complete. Keep the engine, wheels and catalytic converter where they are; if anything has been sold off, tell us before the offer.
  5. On pickup day, keep the title and your photo ID at hand. Lost title? Read our no-title guide first. Plate and insurance steps by state are in after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Lumina model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1995 leads with 492 on October 10, 2026, followed by the 1990 (427), the 1991 (352) and the 1997 (347). On the 1995, visibility draws the most complaints (79), and that year has a wiper switch recall, 97V017.
Was the 2001 Lumina sold new to the public?
Not at retail. Retail sales ended in Canada in 1999 and in the US a year later, and GM built the 2001 model year for rental fleets only.
The cradle bolts on my 1990 or 1991 Lumina are rusted. Is there a recall?
There are two. Recall 97V058 covers the rear cradle bolts on cars sold or registered in 14 listed states, and 00V189 covers the front bolts in a longer list of states plus the District of Columbia. A VIN check at nhtsa.gov/recalls shows whether either is still open.
Will you buy a Lumina that has sat for years on flat tires?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Say the tires are flat and how close a truck can get to the car.
Does this page cover the Lumina APV minivan?
No. The APV is a different vehicle with its own record, so it has its own page. This one covers the Lumina sedan and coupe.
