Look at the recall list for your car's year before you price a repair. A few Corvette recalls fix the very fault that keeps one parked, such as a steering column lock that refuses to let go.

Corvette problems, C4 to C8

NHTSA's files, downloaded October 10, 2026, hold 5,290 complaints and 45 recall campaigns for the 1984 to 2027 Corvette, every one built in Bowling Green, Kentucky. When a campaign also took in other GM models, the vehicle count belongs to the whole campaign.

C4 (1984-1996): seat belts, tie rods, a steering hose

C4 production ran from January 3, 1983 to June 20, 1996. Every engine was a 350 cubic inch (5.7-liter) V8, from the L83 to the LT5, and the manuals ran from the Doug Nash 4+3 to a ZF six-speed.

These 13 model years have just 289 complaints between them. Belts top the complaint list for 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988. Recall 91V143 dealt with front belts that could lock up or jam in the retractor, across 231,833 Corvettes built for 1984 to 1991. Recall 90V032 replaced rear tie rods that could fatigue and crack at the inboard bearing on 1988-1989 cars. Recall 92V160 fitted a better power steering inlet hose to 1992-1993 cars, because the old one could split and spray flammable fluid around the engine.

C5 (1997-2004): the column lock

The C5 went into production on October 1, 1996. The convertible followed in August 1997 as a 1998 model. The base engine was the 5.7-liter LS1, and the Z06 used the LS6 from 2001. Buyers chose a T-56 six-speed manual or a 4L60E automatic.

Steering draws 826 of the generation's 1,800 complaints and tops every C5 year but the 2004, where fuel system complaints lead. Much of it traces to the electronic steering column lock. Read one at a time in NHTSA's online database, 188 of the 217 steering complaints on the 1998 name the lock, and many describe a wheel that stayed locked and a car that would not steer. Recall 04V060, filed in February 2004, covers 126,624 Corvettes from 1997 to 2004 whose column lock can fail to release at start-up. On automatic cars, the dealer disables the lock.

Other C5 recalls include lap belts that can twist and jam on 1997-2000 cars (00V111), and washers on 2004 cars that can crack and free a front lower control arm from the knuckle (04V273).

C6 (2005-2013): roof panels, low beams and fuel smell

C6 production lasted from June 2004 to February 28, 2013. It began with the 6.0-liter LS2 and switched to the 6.2-liter LS3 for 2008. The Z06 came for 2006 with a 7.0-liter LS7, and the C6 engine list also holds a supercharged 6.2-liter LS9.

The 2005 has six recall campaigns, the most of any Corvette year. The C6 list includes:

  • Roof panel. On 2005-2006 cars with a painted roof, the adhesive between the panel and the frame can separate and the panel could come off (06V181). A follow-up, 09V491, installed a new-design panel on 2005-2007 cars; snapping or wind noise comes first.
  • Low beams. The underhood electrical center on 2005-2007 cars can swell and bend the low-beam relay wire until it breaks (14V251, 103,158 cars).

The 2008 has the most complaints of any Corvette year, 589, and 363 of them fall under fuel and propulsion. In the online records, 378 of 389 fuel complaints on the 2008 mention fuel odor, vapor, fumes or a leak, often right after filling the tank. The 2008 has no recall campaigns at all, and we found no GM program for the smell.

C7 (2014-2019): wheels that crack

The C7 debuted January 13, 2013. It had the 6.2-liter LT1, a supercharged LT4 in the Z06 and the LT5 in the ZR1, with a seven-speed Tremec manual or a six-speed (2014) or eight-speed 8L90 automatic. Production stopped from July to November 2017 while the plant was shut.

For 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, wheels draw more complaints than anything else: 442 in all. On the 2017, 187 of 224 wheel complaints in NHTSA's online records describe a cracked wheel, usually found after a tire kept losing air. NHTSA lists no recall for it.

The 2014 and 2015 had six small launch recalls, from an air bag sensing module to a rear toe link, none over 1,939 cars. Recalls 16V651 and 17V437 then dealt with front air bags and belt pretensioners on 2014-2017 cars that might not deploy in a crash; 16V651 alone spans 3,640,162 vehicles across many GM lines. Electric power steering could quit on 2017 cars (19V086) and on some 2017-2018 cars (25V175); both campaigns also include the Camaro and Cadillac CTS and ATS.

C8 (2020-2027): engine behind the seats

C8 production started February 3, 2020, after the 2019 GM strike delayed it. It is the first Corvette with the engine behind the driver. It uses an eight-speed dual-clutch only, and the E-Ray and ZR1X are hybrids with a 1.9 kWh battery.

There are just 130 complaints for 2020-2027 so far. Four of the ten recalls on these cars were fixed with new software, and most of the rest with new parts. The release button inside the front trunk could stop working ten minutes after shut-off, trapping anyone shut inside (20V461). Another let the car be driven with the front trunk lid unlatched (20V489). On 2021-2022 cars, rear half-shafts could be missing ball bearings and drop drive power (22V091). On 2023-2026 cars, fuel could spill into the filler pocket while refueling (25V536).

Complaints and recalls by model year

Quiet stretches are grouped. Crash and fire figures are owner-reported, taken from the complaint forms. A campaign is counted in every year or group it touches, so the recall column sums to more than 45.

Repair or sell?

Weigh a written repair quote against what the same car brings running. Then check these:

  1. Recall status. Search the car's VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls and ask a Chevy dealer about anything still open.
  2. C5 that won't steer or start? Suspect the column lock and recall 04V060 before you suspect the engine.
  3. Snapping noise from the roof on a 2005-2007? That is the warning sign named in recall 09V491.
  4. Crash damage? Our wrecked car guide covers the fix-or-sell question. If the insurer totaled it, read salvage title first.

Selling your Corvette whole

  1. Note the details: year, coupe or convertible, miles, and what is wrong.
  2. Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us the spot, whether a garage, a carport or a storage unit, and if it rolls. Corvettes sit low, so mention a damaged nose or flat tires so the pickup can be planned.
  4. Keep it complete, with the roof panel, wheels and seats in place. Tell us about anything swapped or removed.
  5. Paperwork at pickup: the Corvette's title and your driver's license or other ID. Plate rules vary by state; see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Corvette model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2008, with 589 in the October 10, 2026 download. Next are the 2005 (537), the 2006 (413), the 1998 (399) and the 2007 (386). Four of those five are C6 cars, and most 2008 complaints fall under the fuel system.
My C5 Corvette won't start and the wheel is locked. Is that a known fault?
Yes. The C5's electronic steering column lock can fail to release at start-up. Recall 04V060 covered 126,624 Corvettes from 1997 to 2004; on automatic cars, dealers disabled the lock. A VIN search at nhtsa.gov/recalls tells you whether that work was ever done.
Is there a recall for cracked wheels on a C7 Corvette?
Not one that NHTSA lists. Wheels lead the complaint list for 2016 through 2019, and on the 2017 most wheel complaints describe a crack found after a tire kept losing air. We also found no NHTSA investigation or GM coverage document for the cracks.
Will you buy a Corvette that was wrecked or flooded?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, sports cars included, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us what was hit or how high the water reached, and whether the car still rolls.
Should I take out the roof panel or aftermarket parts before selling?
No. Sell the whole car as it sits, roof panel and all. If wheels, seats or engine parts were swapped or pulled, mention it in your offer request.
