Selling a Chevrolet Malibu that won't steer, shift or start
A Malibu that lost its steering assist, won't come out of Park, or has a turbo four that quit can be sold the way it is. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Nothing needs fixing or stripping first.

NHTSA's Malibu file has two big clusters: steering on the 2004-2012 cars and engine complaints on the 2016-2018 turbos. One GM coverage program is still open on many 2017-2018 cars, so check it first.
Five Malibus since 1997
Chevrolet revived the Malibu name for 1997 after a 14-year gap. The last one left Fairfax Assembly in Kansas City, Kansas, in November 2024, and nothing replaced it. Each number below is our own count of NHTSA's raw complaint and recall rows for the Malibu, taken October 10, 2026.
| Model years | Generation | Engines | NHTSA complaints | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1997-2003 | 5th, GM N platform | 2.4 four (to 1999) or 3.1 V6, four-speed automatic | 5,055 | 8 |
| 2004-2007 | 6th, Epsilon, plus the Maxx hatchback | 2.2 Ecotec four, 3.5 or 3.9 V6 | 5,512 | 10 |
| 2008-2012 | 7th | 2.4 four, 3.6 V6, Hybrid in 2008-2009 | 5,798 | 8 |
| 2013-2015 | 8th | Fours only: 2.5, 2.4 eAssist, 2.0 turbo | 1,556 | 16 |
| 2016-2025 | 9th | 1.5 turbo, 2.0 turbo (to 2022), 1.8 hybrid (2016-2019) | 2,997 | 18 |
A campaign that reaches across a redesign is counted under each generation it touches. Complaints filed under Malibu Maxx, Malibu Classic, Malibu Hybrid and Malibu Eco are folded into these totals.
1997-2003: brakes, then wiring
Brakes lead the early file. On the 1998, 310 of 981 complaints name the hydraulic service brakes; on the 1999 it is 258 of 793. From 2001 through 2003 the electrical system takes over the top spot.
The recall to know is 14V400, from July 2014. A heavy key ring can drag the ignition out of Run, and then the air bags may not deploy in a crash. GM told owners to carry the ignition key by itself until a dealer fitted two new key rings and a slot insert, or a cover over the key head. That campaign counted 5,877,718 vehicles, and the Malibu was one of many in it, alongside the Impala, Monte Carlo, Grand Am, Grand Prix, Alero and Intrigue.
2004-2007: the steering years
The Epsilon Malibu and its Maxx hatchback own the steering story. Steering is named in 974 of the 2004's 1,697 complaints and 923 of the 2006's 1,386.
Two recalls deal with a sudden loss of electric power steering assist. Recall 14V153 (March 2014) covers 2004-2006 and 2008-2009 Malibus and 2004-2006 Maxxes; its 1,373,177 total also takes in the HHR, Cobalt, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura and Ion. Recall 15V064 (February 2015) covers 2006-2007 Malibus and Maxxes built April 1 to June 30, 2006, plus some G6s, 69,633 in all, and dealers replace the torque sensor. GM's special coverage 10183A paid for a new steering column on 2005-2006 cars and a power steering motor control module on the 2008. That program ran 10 years from each car's in-service date or 150,000 miles, whichever came first, so none qualify today.
The shift cable is the other big one. Recall 14V224 says a cable that breaks can leave the transmission in a gear that doesn't match the indicator, and the car may move in a direction the driver doesn't expect. It covers 2004-2008 Malibus built May 16, 2003 to October 5, 2007, together with the Maxx, G6 and Aura, for 1,131,113 vehicles. Dealers fit a new cable and mounting bracket.
2008-2012: steering again, and the six-speed
The 2009 is the second-worst year on file, 1,534 complaints, with 571 naming steering and 180 naming stability control. GM's special coverage 15356 later paid for sudden steering-assist loss on 2007-2012 Malibus under the same ten-year, 150,000-mile limit, replacing a torque sensor or the motor and controller depending on the trouble code. On these years it has run out as well.
Recall 14V252 (May 2014) spans 2004-2012: dealers fasten the body control module harness with a spacer, put dielectric lubricant on the connectors and relearn the brake pedal's home position. Its 2,440,524 count includes the Maxx, G6 and Aura.
Six-speed cars had their own program. Special coverage 14404 dealt with a cracked clutch wave plate in the 6T70 automatic on 2008-2009 Malibus, which costs the car third, fifth and reverse. Its ten-year, 120,000-mile window has closed.
2013-2015: the short eighth generation
The 2013 carries 11 recall campaigns, more than any other Malibu year, including rear suspension bolts that may not have been tightened (13V024), a power seat harness that can chafe and short (13V566), and rear toe links that can fracture on cars whose sale or registration history touches states NHTSA lists by name, among them Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan, New York and Ohio (20V764, which also takes in the Buick LaCrosse and Regal). On the 2014, recall 14V247 covers a complete loss of brake vacuum assist on cars that pair the 2.5-liter engine with auto stop/start; dealers update the brake module software.
2016-2025: turbo fours, and a coverage that is still open
Engine complaints lead the 2016 (189 of 861), the 2017 (163 of 725) and the 2018 (185 of 710). Two items matter when one of these runs badly:
- Recall 19V642. On 2018 Malibus with the 1.5-liter turbo, an engine computer software error can disable the fuel injectors, so the engine won't start or it stalls. Dealers reprogram it.
- Special coverage N182188250. A break in the accelerator pedal sensor circuit on a 2016-2018 Malibu drops the car into reduced engine power. The coverage runs a decade from each car's original in-service date, capped at 150,000 miles, so many 2017 and 2018 cars still qualify.
The latest recalls are narrow: 2,108 cars from 2022-2023 whose front impact bar may not be welded to the frame rail (GM buys back any car found with the fault), and 276,879 from 2023-2025 whose rearview camera screen can go blank or distorted.

The recall column lists the campaigns NHTSA ties to each model year. Because one campaign often spans several model years, adding down that column overshoots the 55 separate campaigns. The system column rewords NHTSA's component labels in plain terms, so "Rearview camera" stands for its "back over prevention" and "Hydraulic brakes" for "service brakes, hydraulic." It skips "unknown or other."
Worth repairing, or time to sell the Malibu?
Put the repair estimate next to what the Malibu would sell for running. Once the estimate comes near that figure, selling it unrepaired usually wins. Before deciding:
- Look up the VIN on NHTSA's recall search. Steering, the shift cable and the 2018 injector software are free recall repairs if nobody ever did them.
- A 2016-2018 stuck in reduced power? Ask a Chevrolet dealer about N182188250 before you pay for a pedal or throttle part.
- No reverse on a 2008-2009 six-speed? That coverage has ended, so it comes down to the quote. Our bad transmission guide shows how to weigh it.
- Dead and going nowhere? The non-running car guide is for cars that won't go anywhere on their own.
Getting a Malibu picked up
- Gather the Malibu's VIN, its odometer reading and the symptoms you've noticed.
- Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the spot it's parked in (a driveway, a parking deck, the curb outside, a mechanic's lot) and whether the wheels roll and the steering turns.
- Leave the battery, wheels and catalytic converter in place. Mention anything already pulled off when you ask.
- The Malibu's title and your photo ID are what the driver will ask for. Plate rules change by state; see after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which Malibu model years drew the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2004, with 1,697 on file when we checked on October 10, 2026. The 2009 is second at 1,534, followed by the 2005 (1,393), 2006 (1,386) and 2010 (1,363). Steering is the system named most on all five. The newest Malibus show small counts partly because they have had fewer years on the road.
- Does GM still pay for power steering repairs on a 2004-2012 Malibu?
- Not through its special coverage programs. Bulletins 10183A and 15356 paid for steering-assist repairs for 10 years from a car's in-service date or 150,000 miles, whichever came first, and every car they named is past that now. The safety recalls, 14V153 and 15V064, are a separate matter, and a VIN search on nhtsa.gov/recalls shows whether a Malibu still has either one open.
- My 2017 Malibu keeps going into reduced engine power. Could GM cover it?
- Possibly. Special coverage N182188250 handles a break in the accelerator pedal position sensor circuit on 2016-2018 Malibus until the car is a decade past its in-service date or shows 150,000 miles. Most 2016 cars are at or past the 10-year mark now, but plenty of 2017 and 2018 cars under 150,000 miles are still inside it. A Chevrolet dealer can look up your VIN.
- Our 2018 Malibu with the 1.5 turbo cranks but won't fire. Is there a recall?
- Yes, one to rule out first. Recall 19V642 covers 2018 Malibus with the 1.5-liter turbo whose engine computer software can switch off the fuel injectors. The engine then won't start, or it stalls. Dealers reprogram the software at no charge. It does not explain every no-start, but it costs nothing to check.
- Will you take a Malibu that can't be driven onto a truck?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention whether the wheels turn, whether the shifter reaches Neutral, and whether the Malibu is parked at the curb, in a garage or at a shop.
