Selling a Chevrolet Classic, the fleet Malibu
Chevrolet sold the Classic only to fleets and rental companies. If one has ended up in your driveway and it won't start, or isn't worth another repair, you can sell it whole. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

What a Classic is
For 2004 an all-new Malibu went on sale, and the old 1997-2003 Malibu stayed in production under a new name: the Chevrolet Classic. It is a front-drive four-door sedan on GM's N platform, built at Lansing Car Assembly in Michigan from 2004 until April 2005. The old Malibu's 3.1-liter V6 was dropped. Every Classic has the 144 hp 2.2-liter Ecotec four, and fueleconomy.gov lists a single drivetrain for each year: that engine with a 4-speed automatic.
The name came back once more for 2008. The Malibu Classic was the 2004-2007 Malibu sedan sold for one extra year, built in Kansas City, Kansas: a four-cylinder LS for fleets, and V6 LS and LT models for retail buyers. NHTSA files the 2008 under Malibu, so its complaints and recalls belong on our Malibu page. Everything below covers the 2004-2005 Classic only.
No-starts and the anti-theft light
The electrical system is the complaint area named most on both years: 24 of 40 complaints on the 2004 and 23 of 49 on the 2005. The complaint text shows what sits behind that. On the 2004, 21 complaints mention the ignition or key and 20 mention the anti-theft system. The 2005 splits the same way, 16 and 16.
Owners describe a car that won't crank while the security light stays on. One 2004 owner wrote that the anti-theft system "keeps on coming on and will not let your car start." Another had the ignition lock cylinder and switch replaced to get it going. On a 2005, an owner reported stalling with the anti-theft light lit on the dash. We found no GM bulletin naming the Classic for this, so the pattern rests on owner reports alone.
Steering on the 2005
Steering is the second-largest complaint area on the 2005, with 11 complaints; the 2004 has none in that category. In one report, a driver lost steering at 30 mph without warning and was able to regain control.
Two recalls
- 04V301 (June 2004): a weld on some 2004 fuel tanks might be too weak and let fuel seep out, which could catch fire if it met a spark or flame. Dealers inspected the tank and replaced it where needed.
- 05V054 (February 2005): rear suspension knuckle bolts on some 2005 cars were out of spec and could break under high loads, letting a rear wheel turn in or out on its own. Dealers replaced both bolts at no charge.
Both campaign counts, 2,857 and 9,402 vehicles, include other GM passenger cars, not Classics alone.
| Model year | Complaints | Electrical system | Steering | Recalls |

Fix it or sell it?
A Classic that won't start isn't always a dead engine. If the security light is on, get the ignition and anti-theft system checked first. If the engine or transmission has actually failed, set the quote beside what a running Classic of the same year sells for. Our page on what a junk car is worth covers the things that raise or lower an offer for a non-runner.
Selling it whole
Gather the VIN, the odometer reading and a line or two on the trouble. Offers come online, or by phone at (877) 421-6008. Let us know where it sits (a driveway, a street spot, a body shop), if it rolls, and whether a key is still around. Leave the car complete, and mention any part that has already come off. When the truck arrives, sign the title over and keep your ID handy; after you sell covers plates and insurance by state. If the car can't move at all, our non-running car guide has more.
Questions people ask
- Is a Chevrolet Classic the same car as a Malibu?
- Close to it. The 2004-2005 Classic is the 1997-2003 Malibu under a new name, sold only with the 2.2-liter four. The 2008 Malibu Classic is a different car: the 2004-2007 Malibu sedan, kept on sale for one more year.
- Why won't my Classic start when the security light is on?
- We can't diagnose your car, but it is the most common pattern in owner reports. On the 2004, 20 of 40 complaints mention the anti-theft system and 21 mention the ignition or key. Get the ignition and security system looked at before writing the engine off.
- Will you buy a Classic that doesn't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you sell the whole car as it sits. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
