A Corolla wearing a bowtie
Every Prizm came out of NUMMI in Fremont, California, the plant Toyota and General Motors ran together. Its 1998 redesign arrived just as GM retired the Geo brand and turned the remaining Geo models into Chevrolets; earlier Prizms were Geos. The last one was built on December 13, 2001, which made the 2002 model year a short one.
- Engine: Toyota's 1.8-liter 1ZZ-FE four, all aluminum and driven by a timing chain rather than a belt. Variable valve timing (VVT-i) came for 2000 and raised output from 120 to 125 hp.
- Transmissions: every year offered the same choice, a five-speed stick or an automatic with three or four gears.
- Body: four-door sedan only.
- EPA combined mileage: 26 mpg with the three-speed automatic and 28 with the four-speed on the 1998; 27 and 30 on the 2002.
What owners told NHTSA
The Chevrolet-badged Prizm has 151 complaints on file. The two biggest groups are engine and engine cooling (26) and air bags (25). These are owner reports, not defect findings.
Air bags. They top the complaint list on the 1998 and the 1999. A handful of owners say the air bags did not go off in a crash: 2 complaints on the 1998, 4 on the 1999 and 6 on the 2001. On the 1999, 7 complaints mention the air bag warning light, one of them saying it had been "flashing intermittently since purchase."
Oil burning. Engine complaints lead on the 2000, 2001 and 2002. The 2001 has the most complaints of any Prizm year, 45, and 12 of them describe the engine using or burning oil. On the 2000, 6 complaints say the same. "ENGINE IS EATING OIL," reads one 2001 report. We found no GM or Toyota bulletin, warranty extension or settlement for Prizm oil use.
Recalls: none under the Prizm name
NHTSA's recall file lists no vehicle recall campaign filed under Chevrolet Prizm for 1998 to 2002. Its online lookup shows one item for the car, equipment recall 10E002 from March 2010. That one is for aftermarket Gabriel Ride Control and ArvinMeritor front strut mounts built without a weld, which could let the strut shift out of its mount. It matters only if those replacement mounts were ever fitted to your car.
Toyota's recalls on the matching Corolla were not searched for this page, so don't take this as proof the Prizm never had one.

Fix the Prizm or sell it?
Put two numbers side by side: the repair quote and the price a running Prizm with similar miles fetches. An engine that drinks oil is the pattern in these complaints; if yours needs a rebuild or a swap, our blown engine guide helps you weigh it. If the car failed emissions or a safety check, failed inspection lays out the options.
Getting it sold
Request an offer online or call (877) 421-6008; the VIN, the odometer reading and a sentence on what's failing are enough to start. Mention the trim, base or LSi, if you know it.
Say where the Prizm is and whether it can roll. Pickup is free anywhere in the US, from a driveway, a street or a shop lot.
Leave everything on it, converter and wheels too, and list any part that's already gone. Keep the title and your photo ID handy for pickup. No title? Start with the no-title guide. For what happens to plates and insurance afterward, see after you sell.
Other Chevrolets from that era: the Metro, Tracker and Cavalier, or all Chevrolet models.
Questions people ask
- Is a Chevy Prizm the same car as a Toyota Corolla?
- Close to it. The 1998-2002 Prizm is a rebadged E110 Corolla, built at the Toyota and GM joint plant in Fremont, California, with Toyota's 1.8-liter engine. Wikipedia sums up all three Prizm generations as "virtually the same car as the Toyota Corolla."
- Did the Chevrolet Prizm have any recalls?
- NHTSA's recall file has no vehicle campaign under Chevrolet Prizm for 1998-2002. Its lookup shows only an equipment recall for aftermarket Gabriel and ArvinMeritor strut mounts. Recalls filed by Toyota on the matching Corolla were not checked for this page.
- My Prizm burns a quart of oil every few tanks. Will you still buy it?
- Yes. Oil use is one of the most common Prizm complaints, and it doesn't stop a sale. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and the pickup costs you nothing anywhere in the US.
- What about a Geo Prizm?
- This page covers the Chevrolet-badged cars from 1998 to 2002. Earlier Prizms carried the Geo name, and GM made the remaining Geo models Chevrolets with the 1998 redesign. We buy those too, whole and as they sit.
