Selling a Chevy Spectrum
A Spectrum that has sat for years, or one that won't run, can be sold the way it is. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. No parts need to come off first.

There isn't much in the federal file for this car: 20 complaints across five model years and three recalls, two of them for fuel leaks that could start a fire.
A Chevrolet built by Isuzu
The Spectrum was an Isuzu design. GM wanted one small world car built in one place and exported, and since production of the T-body car had moved to Isuzu in Japan, its replacement went there too. It rode on a front-drive platform with MacPherson struts in front and a beam axle at the rear, and Giorgetto Giugiaro styled the three-door hatchback and four-door sedan.
Chevrolet showed it in late November 1984 and sold it first in 16 eastern states. Import quotas held 1985 supply to 29,500 cars. U.S. cars got a 70 hp 1.5-liter four, paired with either a three-speed automatic or a five-speed stick. For 1987 the front was restyled with "cat's eyes" headlights and 5-mph bumpers, and a Turbo sedan arrived. The 1989 model, now a Geo, went on sale early, in June 1988, with only the non-turbo engine; the Geo Storm and Prizm followed it.
Three recalls, two about fuel
- 87V078 (May 1987), 1985-1986 cars. Too much alcohol in the gasoline could break down the fuel pump diaphragm's coating until it cracked, and a perforated diaphragm can let fuel leak into the engine bay. NHTSA warned of an underhood fire that could reach the cabin. The fix was a vent hose kit that carries leaking fuel away from the engine. 108,268 cars.
- 88V036 (March 1988), 1987-1988 cars. The fuel tank or its feed pipe could corrode through and leak, again with a fire risk. Dealers replaced the tank. 7,665 cars.
- 88V046 (March 1988), 1987-1988 cars. The PCV valve could pass too little air, so a mix of water and oil froze and blocked the oil separator hose in cold weather. Dealers swapped the valve. 8,238 cars.
What the 20 complaints say
Reading the narratives through NHTSA's complaints API turned up 21 unique reports, one more than the flat file counts. Three themes appear four times each:
- Timing belts. Three 1987 owners say the belt broke and the engine failed.
- Clutches. A 1988 owner says the clutch cable pulled through the firewall.
- Seat belts. Rear or passenger belts that stick or won't latch; a 1989 owner calls his the third in the car to fail.

| Model year | Complaints | Crashes reported | Recalls |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1985 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| 1986 | 2 | 1 | 1 |
| 1987 | 9 | 0 | 2 |
| 1988 | 5 | 1 | 2 |
| 1989 (Geo) | 3 | 0 | 0 |
The 1989 row is the Geo Spectrum, kept here because NHTSA files it under the Spectrum name. No complaint reports a fire, an injury or a death.
Before you sell, and how pickup works
On a car from the 1980s, set any quote for a broken timing belt or a rusted fuel tank beside the Spectrum's value as a runner. If it still runs and the tank is sound, a repair may make sense; if not, selling it whole is the simple way out. What a junk car is worth explains what changes the number.
- Find the VIN and title, and note what works and what doesn't.
- Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it sits and whether the tires hold air. Long-parked cars are covered in selling a car that's been sitting.
- Have the title and your ID at pickup. Missing title? See our no-title guide. Plates follow state rules; see after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Is the Chevy Spectrum the same car as the Isuzu I-Mark?
- Yes. Isuzu designed and built it and sold its own version as the I-Mark. In Canada, Pontiac sold it as the Sunburst from 1985 to 1988. For 1989 it carried the Geo name instead of Chevrolet, with the plain 1.5-liter engine only.
- What recalls does the Spectrum have?
- Three. Recall 87V078 vented fuel away from the engine on 1985-1986 cars whose fuel pump diaphragm could leak. Recall 88V036 replaced fuel tanks that could corrode through on 1987-1988 cars. Recall 88V046 replaced a PCV valve that could let an oil separator hose freeze shut in cold weather, also on 1987-1988 cars.
- Do Spectrum timing belts break?
- Some owners say so. Of 21 Spectrum complaints we read through NHTSA's API, four mention the timing belt, and three 1987 owners report it breaking and the engine failing. That is a small sample, so treat it as a warning rather than a rate.
- Will you buy a Spectrum that has been parked for decades?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us roughly how long it has sat, whether it rolls, and whether it's in a garage, a barn or out on the street.
