Selling a tired or dead Chrysler Conquest

No recall campaign in NHTSA's records lists the Chrysler Conquest. NHTSA's complaint file holds six owner complaints on it, spread over four model years, and only one reports a crash.

That leaves the usual reasons a Conquest stops being worth keeping: age, a tired turbo engine, years of sitting. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

A Mitsubishi sold as a Chrysler

Mitsubishi Motors built the Conquest at its Nagoya Plant in Okazaki, Japan, according to Wikipedia. The EPA lists it as a Chrysler subcompact for 1987 to 1989. Wikipedia gives the production run as 1982 to 1989, with figures that cover both cars in the family.

It is a rear-wheel-drive car with the engine up front. Wikipedia lists three engines for the line, all four-cylinders: a 2.0-liter G63B, a turbo version of it, and a 2.6-liter G54B turbo. Buyers chose between a manual with five gears and a four-gear automatic. Wikipedia names the Mitsubishi GTO and Dodge Stealth as its successors.

What owners reported

The Conquest was one generation, so the record is grouped by year.

  • 1986: one complaint, naming the power train. NHTSA's file has it under 1986, a year before the first Conquest in EPA data.
  • 1987: one complaint, about steering. It is the only complaint that reports a crash.
  • 1988: three complaints, the most of any year. One each names the wheels, steering and speed control.
  • 1989: one complaint, filed under "unknown or other."

Steering is the only component named twice. Six complaints over four years is too few to show a pattern, so don't read this as a ranking.

Fix it or sell it?

With no recall work to wait for, the decision rests on this particular car's condition. On a turbo Conquest, the turbo and the engine are the big jobs. Our failed turbo guide covers the signs and when a repair stops making sense.

If the car has been a garage project for years, old project car walks through finishing it versus selling it. If it has been parked outside since the last time it ran, see car sitting for years.

Selling a Conquest whole

  1. Find the title and the VIN.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us if it rolls and steers, since a rear-drive car with a locked-up axle loads differently. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep the engine, turbo and wheels on the car. If you already sold the turbo or a wheel, let us know which one.
