Selling a junk or broken-down Chrysler Sebring
Three separate recalls went after the front lower ball joints on 1995-2000 Sebrings. Owners' NHTSA complaints point the same way: suspension is the component named most on the 1995 and the 1996, and the 1996 is the Sebring's busiest year at 420 complaints.

Three Sebrings, 1995-2010
Wikipedia splits the Sebring into three generations. These totals are Sebring owner complaints filed with NHTSA up to October 10, 2026. They reflect reports, not reliability, and the last Sebring years spent less time driving around to earn them.
| Model years | Bodies and build | Engines listed | Complaints |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1995-2000 | Coupe built in Normal, Ill.; convertible from 1996, based on the Cirrus | Coupe: 2.0 four, 2.5 Mitsubishi V6. Convertible: 2.4 four | 1,594 |
| 2001-2006 | Sedan and convertible built in Sterling Heights, Mich.; coupe on a Mitsubishi Eclipse variant through 2005 | 2.4 four, 2.4 turbo four; 4-speed 41TE automatic | 1,440 |
| 2007-2010 | Sedan and convertible, Sterling Heights; all-wheel drive on sedans, a retractable metal top available | 2.0 and 2.4 World fours, 2.7 V6 (also E85) | 840 |
Three more complaints are filed under a 2011 Sebring, a year past the end of EPA's data.
1995-2000: the front end
Suspension leads the 1995 (39 complaints) and the 1996 (69). Recall 97V201000 says the lower control arm ball joint on 1995-1997 cars can separate when it loses its grease. Recalls 99V066003 and 00V421002 deal with damaged ball joint boots letting in dirt and water; the second one, for 1995-2000, was expanded by Mitsubishi. That campaign counts 393,796 vehicles, which reach past the Sebring.
On 1996-1997 cars with the 2.5L V6, the throttle cable can fray and stick (02V186000). Structure leads the 1998 at 60 complaints, and seat belts lead the 2000 at 32.
2001-2006: engine cooling complaints
Engine and engine cooling jumps to the top on the 2001: 150 of 387 complaints. It leads the 2002 (85 of 358) and the 2004 (55 of 292) as well. On the 2004, 21 complaints report a fire.
Recall 01V011002 replaces transaxle oil cooler hoses on 2001 cars with automatics. Recall 15V338000, run by Mitsubishi for the Eclipse, reaches 2001-2005 Sebrings: dealers add a tether to the passenger air bag. Its 443,442 count is mostly other models. The 2006 has no recall campaigns at all, while the electrical system leads its 197 complaints with 91.
2007-2010: wiring and the 2.4 fan
The electrical system leads the 2007 (85) and the 2008 (90). Recall 08V152000 says unused tire pressure sensor connectors on 2007-2008 Sebrings and Dodge Avengers can corrode and short. On 2007-2008 cars with the 2.4 engine, coolant can get drawn into the left radiator fan connector (07V473000), and dealers replace the fan motor. Recall 06V493000 reprograms the ABS on the 2007, where the software could lock the rear brakes.
The 2010 has 104 complaints, 30 of them air bags. Recall 16V668000 replaces the occupant restraint controller; its 1,435,625 count covers the 200, Caliber, Patriot, Compass and Avenger too.
Model-year counts from NHTSA
Counted October 10, 2026. A single Sebring recall can touch more than one year, so adding up that column gets you more than 37.

Worth fixing?
Start with the newest a Sebring can be: a 2010 is sixteen model years old. Set the repair quote beside the price a running Sebring of that year fetches.
- Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Air bag work on 2001-2005 and 2010 cars may still be open.
- Clunk or wander from the front end on a 1995-2000? Ball joints are the recall story here. See broken suspension.
- Overheating on a 2001-2004, or a fan that won't run on a 2007-2008? Read head gasket or overheating before paying for a teardown.
- Gauges, lights or the TPMS acting up on a 2007-2008? Our electrical problems guide helps you decide.
Selling it as it sits
- Note the VIN and mileage, the problem, and which Sebring body you have: coupe, sedan or convertible.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where the Sebring sits and if the wheels turn. The truck loads it there. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it whole, top, wheels and converter included. Mention anything already taken off.
- Have the keys and title in hand at pickup. No title? Start with selling with no title.

Questions people ask
- Which Sebring model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1996, with 420 as of October 10, 2026. Then the 2001 (387), the 2002 (358), the 2008 (352) and the 2007 (339). Those counts are owner reports, not a reliability grade.
- Is a Sebring convertible the same car as a Sebring coupe?
- Not in the first generation. Wikipedia says the 1996-2000 convertible was based on the Cirrus sedan, while the coupe was built in Normal, Illinois. From 2001 the coupe used a variant of the Mitsubishi Eclipse platform, and it ended after 2005.
- Will you buy a Sebring with a bad front end or an overheating engine?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, including ones that can't be driven. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Does the convertible top need to work?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits. Tell us if the top is torn or stuck, and whether it's up or down, so we know what to expect.
