Selling a junk Daewoo Lanos
The Lanos was the smallest Daewoo sold here, and it has the longest recall list: 10 campaigns on NHTSA's books, against 3 each for the Nubira and the Leganza. Its owner complaints also report more injuries, 21, and more deaths, 3, than either of the other two.

A small car with a long life elsewhere
For model years 1998 to 2003, EPA classes the Lanos as a compact car. Wikipedia describes it as a Giugiaro design at Italdesign on the GM T platform, built at Bupyeong in South Korea from 1997 and designed to replace the Daewoo Nexia. The Daewoo Kalos replaced it.
In the US it lasted a few model years. Elsewhere it kept going. Wikipedia says FSO in Warsaw began building it in 1998, and that in Ukraine it was the best-selling car from at least 2006 until 2014 (except 2012), built by ZAZ. Over the years 364,000 were bought there. Passenger car production ended in 2017; the panel van ran until 2020.
The maker had a shorter run. Wikipedia records the Daewoo group's bankruptcy with 1 November 1999 as its end date, and says Chevrolet or Ravon replaced the Daewoo name step by step.
Ten recalls, grouped by what they fixed
The vehicle numbers below are for each full campaign and can take in Daewoo models besides the Lanos.
- Steering wheel, 1998-1999. Campaign 98V305000: the center bushing joining the wheel hub to the steering column can slip (1,063 vehicles). Campaign 98V305001, for cars in Puerto Rico: the wheel can be damaged by over-rotation (1,077 vehicles). Dealers fitted a revised steering wheel in both.
- Side door impact pad, 1998-1999. Campaigns 99V090000 (2,929 vehicles) and 99V090002 (124 vehicles): the cars did not meet federal standard 214 for side door strength because the side impact pad sat toward the rear of the door instead of the middle. Dealers moved the pad.
- Alloy wheels, 1998-2000. Campaign 99V336001: alloy wheels were made without the steel bushing inserts around the bolt holes (2,811 vehicles). Dealers retorqued the wheel bolts and updated the torque spec in the owner's manual.
- Floor wiring harness, 2000-2001. Campaign 01V020000: a harness under the carpet in the front passenger footwell can be damaged by rubbing on a floor seam (27,884 vehicles). Dealers moved and fastened it.
- Air bag brackets, 1998-2002. Campaigns 02V131001 (56,912 vehicles) and 02V131002 (13,103 vehicles): the cars fell short of federal standard 201, which covers how well people are protected when they strike the interior. Dealers installed new energy-absorbing air bag mounting brackets.
- Camshaft position sensor, 1998-2002. Campaigns 04V357000 (11,576 vehicles) and 04V394000 (4,305 vehicles): a sensor that can melt and smoke, spreading heat damage to the cam cover and the harness. The repair was a replacement sensor and an added fuse.
Known problems by model year
Wikipedia gives one production run for the Lanos, so these groups follow NHTSA's data.
1998-1999: most recalls, few complaints
These two years are covered by 9 of the 10 campaigns but hold only 67 complaints between them (1998: 5, 1999: 62). On the 1999, 44 are engine and engine cooling and 7 are air bags.
2000-2001: the complaint years
The 2000 has 209 complaints, the most of any Lanos year, and the 2001 has 129. The engine leads both (137 and 73). Air bags come second, with 28 complaints on the 2000 and 34 on the 2001. All 3 complaints that report a death are on the 2000. These are also the two years the floor wiring harness recall covers.
2002-2003
The 2002 has 30 complaints, 17 of them engine, and is covered by 4 campaigns. EPA lists a 2003 Lanos, but NHTSA's complaint file holds none under that year.
Lanos complaints by year
Owner complaints in NHTSA's file, as counted October 10, 2026. Recent model years have had fewer seasons on the road for complaints to build up; here even the youngest Lanos is past 20.
| Year | Complaints | Engine and cooling | Crashes | Injured | Deaths | Recalls covering it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1998 | 5 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 9 |
| 1999 | 62 | 44 | 1 | 5 | 0 | 9 |
| 2000 | 209 | 137 | 8 | 6 | 3 | 6 |
| 2001 | 129 | 73 | 6 | 8 | 0 | 5 |
| 2002 | 30 | 17 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 4 |
| All | 435 | 273 | 17 | 21 | 3 | 10 campaigns |
Across all years, owners name the engine 273 times, air bags 73, hydraulic service brakes 30 and the electrical system 7. Six complaints report a fire.
Is a Lanos worth repairing?
First, enter the Lanos VIN into NHTSA's recall search. With 10 campaigns, a car that changed hands a few times may still show one open. How that affects selling a Lanos is covered in our open recall guide.
Then price the repair against the car. Ask for the Lanos repair quote on paper, then compare it with what a running Lanos with similar miles sells for. When the quote comes close to that or passes it, selling unrepaired usually makes more sense. Old or high mileage covers that decision for a car this age.
How the sale works
- Know the VIN and the mileage, and say plainly what's wrong.
- Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where the Lanos sits and if its wheels roll, it steers, and the tires hold air. We load the Lanos from a driveway, a street or the back of a shop.
- Keep it whole. Sell the whole car as it sits. Anything already pulled off goes on the list you give us; it affects the offer.
- When we collect the Lanos, you give us the signed title and show photo ID. Missing the title? See selling with no title.

Questions people ask
- How many recalls does the Daewoo Lanos have?
- NHTSA lists 10 recall campaigns for the Lanos. The 1998 and 1999 are covered by 9 of them, the 2000 by 6, the 2001 by 5 and the 2002 by 4. Each vehicle count is campaign-wide and can include other models.
- Why are there so many air bag complaints on the Lanos?
- Owners filed 73 of them, most on the 2000 (28) and 2001 (34). NHTSA also lists two 1998-2002 campaigns, 02V131001 and 02V131002, in which dealers installed new energy-absorbing air bag mounting brackets. The complaint counts record what owners reported; they are not a verdict on the car.
- Is the Lanos still made anywhere?
- No. Wikipedia says Lanos production ended in 2017, and the panel van was built in Ukraine until 2020. EPA lists the Lanos in the US for the 1998 to 2003 model years.
- Can you pick up a Lanos that has sat for years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
