Selling a junk or non-running Dodge Avenger
Two unrelated cars wore the Avenger name, and owners complained about different things on each. On the 1995-1999 coupes, suspension tops the NHTSA complaint list every single year. On the sedan, the busiest year by far is the first full one, 2008, with 844 of the Avenger's 3,171 complaints, counted as of October 10, 2026.

Coupe or sedan: what the complaints say
| Version | Model years | Complaints | Engines (Wikipedia) | Named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coupe | 1995-2000 | 578 | 2.0 Chrysler four, 2.5 Mitsubishi V6 | Suspension, brakes |
| Sedan | 2008-2014 | 2,592 | 2.0 and 2.4 World fours, 2.7 V6 | Power train, electrical, air bags |
The sedan figure includes 2 complaints filed under 2007, since production started in February 2007. One more complaint is filed under 2015.
1995-2000 coupe: the front suspension
Mitsubishi built the coupe at the former Diamond Star plant in Normal, Illinois, Wikipedia says, alongside the related Eagle Talon. It didn't sell well and was dropped after 2000, replaced by the Stratus coupe.
Suspension is the top component on the 1995 (57 complaints), the 1996 (52), the 1997 (18), the 1998 (16) and the 1999 (9). Two recalls match it. 99V066 inspected the rubber boots on the front lower ball joints of 1995-1996 cars, since dirt and water could get in if they were damaged in assembly. 00V421 widened that to 1995-2000 and replaced ball joints worn past tolerance. Those campaigns cover 165,857 and 393,796 vehicles, and the notices don't say the totals are Avengers alone.
On every coupe year from 1995 to 1999, hydraulic brakes come in right after suspension. On the 1998, recall 98V045 trimmed a dash panel pad that could shift and interfere with the throttle cable.
2008-2014 sedan: a busy first year, then air bags
The sedan was built in Sterling Heights, Michigan, on the Chrysler JS platform. Wikipedia lists the Sebring and the Chrysler 200 as related cars. Its 2008 drew 844 complaints. Owners named the power train (189), the electrical system (159) and vehicle speed control (94).
Six campaigns list the 2008. 07V414 added a secondary retention feature to both front doors, since the latch cable could unseat and leave a door unlatched. 07V473 replaced the left radiator fan motor on 2.4-liter cars where coolant could be drawn into its connector. 08V152 sealed unused tire pressure monitor connectors on 180,963 Sebrings and Avengers, which could corrode and short. 07V426 replaced fuel tank straps on all-wheel-drive cars.
From 2011 on, air bags take over. They're the top component on the 2013 (145) and the 2014 (65), and second on the 2012 (104). Three campaigns replace or reflash the restraint controllers. 13V282 covers 2011-2013 cars (442,320 vehicles with the Sebring and 200). 16V668 covers 2010-2014 seat belt pretensioner controllers in a 1,435,625-vehicle campaign spanning Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep models. 17V640 covers the active headrest controller on 2012-2013 cars. The 2012 also has 84 complaints about visibility and wipers.
Wikipedia notes the 2008-2014 sedan earned an overall "Good" rating from the IIHS.

Fix the Avenger or sell it?
Line up the shop estimate against asking prices for a running Avenger of your year and body. An estimate that nearly matches them points toward selling it broken.
- Air bag light on a 2010-2014? Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup for 13V282, 16V668 and 17V640, and ask a Dodge dealer. Our open recall guide covers selling with one still open.
- Clunking front end on a coupe? Ball joints were recalled twice. The broken suspension guide helps you weigh the repair.
- 2008 that won't shift or holds speed oddly? Get a written diagnosis first. See bad transmission.
- Many small faults at once? Read repairs cost more than it is worth.
How to sell your Avenger whole
- Know which Avenger you have: coupe or sedan, the year, the VIN and the mileage.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Let us know the location and whether the wheels turn. Mention all-wheel drive if the sedan has it, since that affects how it goes on the truck. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep it whole. Wheels and converter stay; note any part someone already took.
- The driver takes the keys and title and looks at your ID. Plate rules are set by each state. After you sell covers them.
