Selling a broken or junk Dodge Dart

Recall 25V674, reported October 9, 2025, reaches back to certain 2013-2016 Dodge Darts with the 6-speed automatic. The shifter cable can come off the transmission, and then the car may not go into Park. It replaces recall 19V293 from 2019, so a Dart fixed back then needs the new repair as well. NHTSA lists 298,439 vehicles in the campaign.

What went wrong, by year group

The Dart in this data is the compact sold for the 2013 to 2016 model years. The photo above shows an older car that wore the name in Mexico, a 1988 Dart K; in the US the first Dart ran from 1959 to 1976, Wikipedia notes.

One quirk first. NHTSA's file puts 1,081 complaints, the most of any year, under model year 2012, while EPA data starts the Dart at 2013. Recalls on those cars describe "2013 Dodge Dart vehicles" built in 2012 and list them under 2012. Read the 2012 row as early-build Darts.

Early builds (filed as 2012) and the 2013

Power train leads the 2012-filed cars with 367 complaints, then service brakes with 231 and electrical with 115. These complaints report 63 crashes, 14 fires and 2 deaths.

Three recalls line up with that. Recall 13V238 covers Darts with the 1.4L MultiAir turbo and the dual dry clutch transmission, built March 1, 2012 through February 28, 2013; dealers reprogram the powertrain control module. Recall 15V800 covers 2013-2014 Darts with the 2.0L or 2.4L engine; dealers check the brake booster grommet for engine oil. Recall 13V124 covers 46 cars built November 27, 2012 with the wrong rear brake calipers. A fourth, 13V555, has dealers inspect the front seat side air bags on cars with the Mopar 13 package and re-install them as needed.

The 2013 itself drew 284 complaints, 128 of them power train.

2014 and 2015

Complaints rise again: 372 on the 2014 and 528 on the 2015. Engine complaints climb with them, from 71 to 92, and electrical reaches 88 on the 2015.

Recall 15V542 is the big one here. The transmission control module can stop working on 2013-2015 Darts built February 24, 2012 to June 16, 2015, and dealers replace the module and its bracket. Recall 14V800 reconfigures tire pressure monitoring on 944 Dart Aero cars. Recall 16V113 updates engine software on 2.0L Darts with a manual transmission, including some 2015s.

2016

The last year has 258 complaints, 70 of them power train and 43 engine. Recall 16V813 replaces washer pumps whose voltage spikes can knock out the wipers; the campaign lists 53,155 vehicles. Recall 17V824 is about a Kidde fire extinguisher, not the car, and covers various Chrysler, Dodge and RAM vehicles.

NHTSA complaints and recalls by model year

Every Dart figure here is an owner complaint NHTSA had on record October 10, 2026. Each is one person's report, not a ruling on the car. Compared with the first Darts, the 2016 hasn't been driven as many years to build up a count. Some Dart recalls reach across several years, which is why the recall figures don't total 11.

Vehicle counts on a recall cover the whole campaign. Where a campaign may include other models, as the fire extinguisher recall does, the number is not the Dart's alone.

Repair it or sell it?

Compare the repair quote with what the Dart would bring once it runs. When the two get close, selling the whole car usually comes out ahead. Go through it in this order.

  1. First, the Dart's VIN. Put it into NHTSA's lookup. The shifter recall is recent, and the transmission module and brake booster recalls may still be open on your car. Our open recall guide explains what to ask a dealer.
  2. 1.4 turbo that shudders or won't pull away? That's the dual dry clutch car. The dual-clutch guide covers what goes wrong with these gearboxes.
  3. 6-speed automatic stuck or flashing lights? Ask whether recall 15V542 was done before you pay for a transmission. See bad transmission.
  4. Hard or soft brake pedal on a 2.0L or 2.4L? Ask about 15V800, then read bad brakes.

Selling your Dart whole

  1. Gather the basics: VIN, mileage, which engine and gearbox it has, and what it does or doesn't do.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where the Dart sits and if it can roll. One with a loose shifter cable may not hold Park, so tell us, and chock the wheels until the truck arrives. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it whole. Keep the wheels, converter and transmission on. Tell us about anything already removed.
  5. On pickup day, keep your title and photo ID handy. What happens to the Dart's plates depends on your state, and after you sell covers it. No title? Start with selling with no title.

Questions people ask

Which Dodge Dart model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
NHTSA's file puts 1,081 complaints under model year 2012, as of October 10, 2026. Those are early-build Darts: recalls on them describe 2013 cars built in 2012. Next comes the 2015 with 528. A 2016 has been around for fewer years of filing.
My Dart was already fixed under recall 19V293. Am I done?
No. Recall 25V674, reported October 9, 2025, replaces 19V293. Darts repaired under the old recall need the new remedy too. Dealers replace the shifter cable. Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Will you buy a Dart that won't shift or won't hold Park?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention that it won't go into gear and say if the wheels turn. That way the driver brings the right setup.
Should I take any parts off the Dart before you come?
No. Sell the whole car as it sits, with the transmission, catalytic converter and wheels still on. Tell us right away about any part that's already gone.
