Your Dodge Caliber quit? Sell it whole

Nearly half of all NHTSA complaints on the Dodge Caliber are about its first model year. Owners filed 958 of the 1,939 on the 2007 alone, counted as of October 10, 2026. Suspension tops that year with 176, ahead of electrical (155) and structure (136).

The short version on this car

Wikipedia says the Caliber was built at Belvidere Assembly in Illinois from March 2006 to November 2011, just over 400,000 of them. Wikipedia lists 1.8, 2.0 and 2.4 liter GEMA gas four-cylinders and a 2.0 liter VW turbo-diesel. Automatics were a Jatco JF011E CVT; manuals had five or six speeds. The last 2011 cars came off the line on November 23, 2011, and the rest were sold as 2012s before the Dart took over.

Problems owners reported, year by year

2007 and 2008: suspension and structure

These two years hold 1,335 of the 1,939 complaints. On both, suspension is named most (176 on the 2007, 76 on the 2008). Structure is third on the 2007 (136, after electrical at 155) and second on the 2008 (71). Complaints on the 2007 report 57 crashes and 18 fires; those on the 2008 report 2 deaths.

The 2007 has four recall campaigns. Recall 06V493 reprograms the anti-lock brake module, whose software could lock the rear brakes; its 50,665 vehicles may include other models. Recall 07V196 replaced rear hub mounting bolts and repaired the parking brake on 410 cars. Recall 10V234 replaced accelerator pedal assemblies on Calibers and Jeep Compasses built March 7 through May 19, 2006. The fourth, 17V824, is a Kidde fire extinguisher, not a part of the car.

The 2008 has no recall campaigns in NHTSA's list.

2009 and 2010: power train, then air bags

The 2009 drew 232 complaints, and power train leads at 49. Its one recall, 08V528, replaced powertrain control modules built with a new adhesive; the 712 vehicles were spread across the Sebring, Caliber, Avenger, Journey, Patriot and Compass.

On the 2010 (157 complaints), electrical leads at 28 and air bags follow at 26. Recall 10V197 checks a right front door lock rod on 123 cars. Recall 16V668 starts here: dealers replace the occupant restraint control module on 2010-2012 Calibers.

2011 and 2012: air bags lead

Air bags become the top area: 36 of 165 complaints on the 2011 and 17 of 49 on the 2012. Recall 16V668, which replaces the occupant restraint control module, also covers those years. Its 1,435,625 vehicles include the Chrysler 200, Sebring, Jeep Patriot, Compass and Dodge Avenger. Recall 11V315, for steering column pivot rivets on 2011s, also covers other Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep models, such as the Journey, Nitro and Jeep Wrangler.

Complaints and recalls by model year

We pulled these Caliber owner complaints from NHTSA on October 10, 2026. Each one is just what an owner reported, not a finding. Recent cars haven't been around as long to pile them up. Since one campaign may name several years, the recall column won't add up to 8.

Selling the Caliber whole

  1. Note what you know: VIN, mileage, engine size, and whether it's the CVT or a manual.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Give us the location. If a suspension part is broken, a Caliber might not track straight when rolled, so let us know, and say if all four wheels are still on. We can load it at a curb, in a carport or from a repair shop lot.
  4. Don't strip it. Leave the wheels, converter and CVT in place. Missing parts change the offer.
  5. At pickup, bring the title and your ID. Whether the plates go with the car is a state rule; after you sell covers each one.

Worth fixing first?

Compare the shop's estimate with the price a working Caliber from your year brings. When fixing the Caliber would cost close to that figure, it often makes sense to sell it unrepaired.

  • Clunks and wandering on the road fit the suspension complaints on the 2007 and 2008. The broken suspension guide goes through it.
  • Revving with no push forward on an automatic points at the CVT. See failing CVT.
  • Own a 2010-2012? Run the VIN at NHTSA for 16V668, the restraint control module recall, before paying for anything. Our open recall guide explains the next step.

No title in hand? Read selling with no title. Other Dodges: the Neon it replaced, the Journey, the Charger, or every Dodge we cover.

Questions people ask

Which Caliber model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
Of 1,939 Caliber complaints as of October 10, 2026, the 2007 launch year holds 958. Next is the 2008 with 377. Later cars haven't been out as long, but even so, no other year comes close to the 2007.
Is there a restraint module recall on my 2010-2012 Caliber?
Recall 16V668 covers 2010-2012 Calibers along with other Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep models. Dealers replace the occupant restraint control module. The campaign lists 1,435,625 vehicles across all of those models. Type your VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls and you'll see if the repair is still pending on yours.
Will you buy a Caliber with a CVT that won't move the car?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention that it can't be driven, and say if it moves when put in Neutral.
How did the Caliber do in crash tests?
Wikipedia reports the IIHS gave it an overall Good score in frontal crash testing and Marginal overall in its side impact test.
