Selling a junk or non-running Dodge Charger

One model year dominates the Charger's NHTSA record. Owners filed 1,294 complaints on the 2006, the first year of the four-door LX car, out of 5,870 for every Charger year combined, counted as of October 10, 2026. On that 2006, the engine (275) and the fuel and propulsion system (230) are named most.

What owners reported, generation by generation

Generations follow Wikipedia's article on the Charger. Complaint totals are our tally of the NHTSA complaint file pulled on October 10, 2026.

Three more complaints are filed under the 2001 model year.

2006-2010: the LX sedan comes back

Wikipedia says Dodge brought the Charger back for 2006 as a four-door sedan on the Chrysler LX platform, after a twenty-year absence. The first year drew the most complaints. The 2007 shifted toward the power train, named in 205 of its 570 complaints. On the 2008, the electrical system leads with 318 of 624.

Three recall campaigns stand out here. 05V460 covered 2006 vehicles with the 42RLE automatic, where the cup plug that retains the park pawl's anchor shaft might not have been put in properly; its 256,409 vehicles include pickups and SUVs, not only Chargers. 14V567 swapped the ignition switch and fobs on 2008 cars, in a campaign of 292,798 that also took in the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Magnum. And two air bag campaigns, 15V313 and 16V352, carry a DO NOT DRIVE warning and list Charger years inside 2006-2012. Those two campaigns cover 4,077,169 and 4,648,270 vehicles across many Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram models, so the totals are not Charger counts.

2011-2023: the long LD run

The 2011 got a new interior and new styling, Wikipedia says. It also brought the Charger's two busiest recall years: 12 campaigns list the 2011 and 15 list the 2012.

Electrical complaints peak right here: 328 on the 2011 and 287 on the 2012. The 2011 also has the most complaints marked as involving a fire, 64, and the 2012 has 50. Recall 12V197 explains one electrical pattern: on 2011-2012 Chargers and 300s, an overheated power distribution center could cost the car its ABS and stability control. Alternators came next. 14V634 replaced them on 2011-2014 cars, and 17V435 went back to inspect them. Each campaign runs past 435,000 vehicles because it includes the 300, Challenger, Durango and Grand Cherokee.

Later in the run, the complaints turn to air bags. They are the top component on the 2019 (48 of 120), the 2020 (35 of 57) and the 2021 (14 of 35). Recall 24V198 replaces both side curtain air bags on 2018-2021 Chargers and 300s, whose inflators may rupture. Owner letters went out starting February 20, 2025.

The 2014 has the most crashes noted in complaints of any year, 42. Steering appears in its top three (38).

2024 onward: the liftback

The eighth generation is a two- or four-door liftback, starting with the Charger Daytona EV for 2025 and adding the SixPack, with a 3.0-liter Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six, for 2026. Its three model years hold 68 complaints. A 2024 or later Charger has been out only a year or two, so read its counts as early numbers.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Our Charger tally uses the NHTSA file pulled October 10, 2026. Each recall figure is the number of campaigns naming that year; because a campaign often names several years, the figures overlap and shouldn't be summed.

Fix the Charger or sell it?

Weigh the shop's quote against the price a running Charger of your year brings. If the gap is small, a sale as-is tends to come out ahead. Start here.

  1. One of the DO NOT DRIVE inflator campaigns? Enter the VIN on NHTSA's recall page. If 15V313, 16V352 or 18V021 is open, ask a Dodge dealer about it before anything else. Our open recall guide covers selling with one still open.
  2. 2011-2012 with electrical trouble? Ask a dealer whether 12V197, 14V634 and 17V435 were done on your car. The electrical problems guide helps you weigh a fault nobody can find.
  3. 2006-2007 with an engine or transmission gone? That is where the engine and power train complaints cluster. See blown engine and bad transmission.
  4. Quote higher than the car is worth? Read repairs cost more than it is worth.

Selling a Charger whole

  1. Note the Charger's VIN, mileage and year. Say if it's AWD. EPA lists all-wheel-drive Charger versions.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the spot and whether it rolls in Neutral. A Charger parked nose-in at the back of a garage needs a different setup than one at the curb. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Don't part it out. The wheels, battery and catalytic converter stay on. List anything already pulled.
  5. When the driver shows up for the Charger, hand over the title and any keys you have, and show your ID. What to do with the plates depends on your state; after you sell has the rules.

No title? Start with the no-title guide. For other Dodge cars, see the Intrepid, Daytona and Stealth, or every Dodge model.

Questions people ask

Which Charger model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
In the NHTSA tally from October 10, 2026, the 2006 is on top with 1,294. Behind it come the 2011 (699), the 2012 (661) and the 2008 (624). The 2024-2026 Charger is still new, so its low number will likely keep climbing.
My Charger is under a DO NOT DRIVE air bag campaign. Is it still sellable?
Yes. Campaigns 15V313, 16V352 and 18V021 tell owners of listed Chargers not to drive until the inflator is replaced. Enter the Charger's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to check for an open recall. When you sell the whole Charger, nobody needs to drive it. Bring up the warning when you request an offer.
Will you buy a Charger that won't start or has a dead electrical system?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Describe the symptom, such as clicking, no lights, or cranking without firing, and whether the car rolls.
Should the wheels or battery come off before pickup?
No. You sell the whole car as it sits. Anything already removed should be listed when you ask, since it affects the offer.
