Selling a junk or non-running Dodge Shadow
Seats, not engines, top the Dodge Shadow's complaint file. Owners filed 464 complaints with NHTSA about the Shadow, counted as of October 10, 2026, and 62 of them name the seats. Two recalls in the late 1990s went back to replace a bolt in the driver's seat back.

Even a 1994 Shadow is past 30. When yours has a seat that won't stay up, an engine that won't fire or a body too tired to fix, you can sell it as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
The Shadow's problems, stretch by stretch
Wikipedia's production table lists 3-door, 5-door and Convertible Shadows, and the EPA lists a Shadow and a Shadow Convertible. Per Wikipedia, production ran from August 1986 to March 1994 at Sterling Heights, Michigan, and Toluca, Mexico, on Chrysler's front-wheel-drive P platform. Engines were the 2.2-liter K four, the 2.2 Turbo I and Turbo IV, and the 2.5-liter K four. Gearboxes were a 3-speed A413 automatic, a 4-speed A604 automatic or a 5-speed manual. The split below follows the recall record.
1987-1988: fuel hoses and shoulder belts
Recall 88V105 covers 1986-1987 cars. In low temperatures, fuel could seep from the joints where an engine-bay supply hose connects to the pressure regulator and fuel rail. Dealers relocated the regulator and routed a new formed hose. NHTSA's figure of 580,000 vehicles is for the whole campaign, not just Shadows. Fuel system is the top component in 1987 complaints (4 of 12), and 3 of those 12 mention a fire.
Belts come next. Recall 88V129 replaced a front passenger lap belt retractor on 1988 cars, the kind with a child-seat locking feature. Recall 92V053 replaced the drive and rail of the automatic shoulder belts on 1988-1989 cars, because the system could stop working. Seat belts are the top component in 1988 complaints (6 of 12) and 1989 complaints (9 of 33). A 1987 recall, 89V038, replaced a parking brake part that could come loose.
1989-1990: the 2.5 and a leaking valve cover
Wikipedia says that for 1989 the 2.2 engine was replaced by the larger 2.5-liter unit. Recall 89V237 covers 1989-1990 cars: a dislodged valve cover gasket could let engine oil escape. The remedy swapped in a revised cover, sealed by a bead of RTV in place of any gasket. Its 634,000-vehicle count spans the whole campaign and may cover more than the Shadow. Engine and engine cooling is a top component in both years, with 6 complaints in 1989 and 8 in 1990.
The 1990 file looks different. Of its 40 complaints, 14 name the air bags and 14 report a crash.
1991-1992: the most recalls
The 1991 has five recall campaigns and the 1992 has four, more than any other year.
- Brakes (1991): 90V162. NHTSA says the bolts on the front brake caliper guide pins may not have been torqued properly and could loosen.
- Air bag sensors (1991): 90V194. The two front impact sensors might not be fastened to their brackets. That campaign counts just 398 vehicles.
- Steering (1992): 92V015. The bolt that couples the upper steering column shaft turned brittle from its zinc plating and could snap. Dealers swapped in a phosphate-plated bolt.
- Steering wheels (1991-1992): 96V229. The steering wheel armature could crack and separate from the center hub. Dealers inspected and replaced cracked wheels.
- Driver's seat (1991-1992): 97V078. The lower seat back bolt could fail and separate.
In owner complaints, seats are the top component on the 1991 (16 of 91) and the 1992 (19 of 73), with air bags second both years.
1993-1994: the last cars, the most complaints
For 1993, the America model gave way to a better-equipped base model, per Wikipedia. The 1993 has 107 complaints, more than any other year. Seats lead with 14, power train has 13 and engine has 11. The 1994 has 94, led by air bags with 13. Both years have one recall, 99V212, which went back to the driver's seat bolt on 1991-1994 cars. That campaign counts 227,283 vehicles and describes them only as passenger vehicles, so it likely reaches past the Shadow.
Complaints and recalls, year by year
Source: NHTSA's owner complaint file, our count through October 10, 2026. Each number is reports owners sent in; none of it proves a defect or grades the car. Later Shadows spent fewer years on the road before this count, though even the 1994 is past 30. Recalls that span several years appear under each one.
| Year | Complaints | Crashes | Fires | Injured | Recall campaigns | Top component |

| 1995 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Steering |
The 1986 and 1995 rows are single complaints filed under years outside the EPA's 1987-1994 range. Across all years, 86 complaints report a crash, 27 a fire, 68 an injury and 2 a death.
Is a Shadow worth fixing now?
Start with the recall lookup. Put the VIN into NHTSA's recall search, since a 1991-1994 car may never have had the seat bolt replaced. After that, compare the estimate with what a Shadow that runs, same year, sells for.
- Engine won't run or leaks oil badly? The blown engine guide covers how to decide.
- Automatic slipping or stuck? See bad transmission.
- Parked since the '90s or close to it? Old gas, dry-rotted tires and stuck brakes are typical. Car sitting for years walks through it.
When the quote comes near what the car is worth running, or past it, selling it whole is usually the cleaner move. What a junk car is worth explains what moves an offer.
Selling your Shadow whole
- Gather the details: VIN, mileage, engine if you know it, and whether it's the hatchback or the Shadow Convertible the EPA also lists.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the spot the hatchback sits in, and flag any tire that won't hold air, since that decides which truck is sent. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep it in one piece. Don't strip the seats, engine or wheels first. Tell us about anything already missing.
- Sign over the Shadow's title when the truck arrives, and show ID. Can't find the title? Start with selling with no title. Plate rules differ by state; after you sell has them.

Questions people ask
- Which Dodge Shadow model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1993 leads with 107 in our October 10, 2026 count, ahead of the 1994 (94) and the 1991 (91). Seats are the component named most often across all years, in 62 of 464 complaints.
- Was the Shadow recalled for the driver's seat?
- Yes, twice. Recall 97V078 covered 1991-1992 cars and recall 99V212 covered 1991-1994 cars. Both replaced the lower seat back bolt on the driver's seat, which NHTSA said can fail and separate. Dealers fitted a stronger bolt with a self-locking nylon patch. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Do you buy a Shadow that won't crank after years parked?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Let us know about flat tires or seized wheels so the driver brings the right equipment.
- Should I pull parts off my Shadow before I sell it?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits. Already missing the engine, a seat or a wheel? Mention it in your offer request.
