Selling a broken or junk Dodge Stealth
Nearly half of the Dodge Stealth's NHTSA complaints are about the power train: 114 of 237. Two of its four recalls deal with oil leaking from the all-wheel drive transfer case. If your Stealth is parked with a dead gearbox, a tired turbo or a leak nobody wants to chase, we buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you can sell the whole car as it sits.

Built alongside the 3000GT
Mitsubishi built the Stealth for Dodge from 1990 to 1996, on the same line at its Nagoya plant in Okazaki, Japan, that built the Mitsubishi 3000GT, according to Wikipedia. It was a two-door liftback with a sideways-mounted V6, sold with front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
Every Stealth used a 3.0-liter 6G72 V6, in one of three forms: SOHC, DOHC 24-valve, or DOHC 24-valve twin-turbo. Gearboxes were a 4-speed automatic, a 5-speed manual, or, from 1993, a 6-speed manual. Wikipedia notes that as prices rose, features went away: the tunable exhaust after the 1994 model year, the electronically controlled suspension after 1995, and the active aerodynamics after 1996.
Problems by year group
1991-1993: the power train years
These are the Stealth's busiest years, with 194 of its 237 complaints. Power train leads on all three: 35 of 63 on the 1991, 45 of 92 on the 1992, and 18 of 39 on the 1993. Seat belts come second on the 1991 and 1992.
The 1991 has four recalls, the most of any year:
- 93V033001: oil could leak from the all-wheel drive transfer case, and low oil could damage the bearings. The fix was a C-ring or a replacement transfer case. Campaign: 2,700 vehicles.
- 02V143002: the same kind of transfer case leak, on 1991-1996 cars built by Mitsubishi for DaimlerChrysler. Dealers inspected for leaks; cars without a leak got a transfer case oil change. Campaign: 9,000 vehicles, which may include other models.
- 96V143003: at full steering lock and full suspension travel, a front brake hose could crack and leak fluid. Covers 1991-1994. Campaign: 23,000 vehicles.
- 95V103003: red front belt buckle release buttons can break and jam the buckle. The 920,000-vehicle campaign covers many other models.
The 1992 also carries 3 death reports. Air bags are its third most named component, at 7.
1994-1996: fewer complaints
The later cars have 42 complaints in all. On the 1994, seat belts lead with 9, ahead of power train with 8, and visibility comes third with 4. The 1994 has 2 death reports. The 1995 has 13 complaints and the 1996 just 1. One more complaint sits under a 1997 Stealth, a model year the EPA does not list.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Stealth numbers are as NHTSA's file stood on October 10, 2026. The 1996 cars have had fewer years than the 1991s in which owners could file, and far fewer were built near the end. Campaigns that span several years count in each one.
| Year | Complaints | Power train | Deaths reported | Recalls | Next most named |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1991 | 63 | 35 | 0 | 4 | Seat belts (12) |
| 1992 | 92 | 45 | 3 | 2 | Seat belts (22) |
| 1993 | 39 | 18 | 0 | 2 | Hydraulic brakes (4) |
| 1994 | 28 | 8 | 2 | 2 | Seat belts (9) |
| 1995 | 13 | 6 | 0 | 1 | Seat belts (3) |
| 1996 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | - |
| 1997 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | - |
Across all years, seat belts are named in 46 complaints, air bags in 14, hydraulic brakes in 12, and engine and cooling in 11.
Selling a Stealth as it sits
- Know what you have: VIN, mileage, and whether it's front-drive or all-wheel drive, automatic or manual. Twin-turbo cars are worth saying so.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it's parked. A low coupe on flat tires in a tight garage needs a careful load. Say whether it rolls and steers. It's free pickup anywhere in the US.
- Leave it complete. Sell the whole car as it sits. Wheels, turbos and body pieces matter on these cars, so tell us if any are missing.
- The driver will ask for the title and your ID.
Fix it first?
Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, especially on an all-wheel drive car with a transfer case leak.
Then line up the repair price, in writing, next to what a Stealth of the same version brings when it runs. A twin-turbo car and a base front-drive car are very different math. If the gearbox is the problem, read bad transmission. If a turbo is gone, failed turbo covers the choice. For a car parked for years, sitting for years lists what usually needs attention.
Other Dodge coupes: the Daytona and the Conquest, plus the Mitsubishi-built Colt, or every Dodge we cover.
Questions people ask
- What were the Dodge Stealth transfer case recalls?
- Two recalls cover oil leaking from the all-wheel drive transfer case. Recall 93V033001 on 1991 cars says low oil can damage the bearings; the fix was a C-ring or a new transfer case. Recall 02V143002 covers 1991-1996 cars built by Mitsubishi for DaimlerChrysler; dealers inspected for leaks and changed the oil. The 9,000-vehicle count for that campaign may include other models.
- Which Stealth year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1992, with 92 as of October 10, 2026. Power train leads that year with 45, and the year has 3 death reports. The 1991 is next with 63.
- Will you buy a Stealth with a blown turbo or a dead transmission?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us which version it is if you know (base, DOHC or twin-turbo), whether it rolls, and where it's parked.
