Selling a junk or wrecked car in Zephyrhills
Zephyrhills has two clocks for the same wrecked car. Section 90.35 makes it unlawful to keep a partially dismantled, wrecked, junked or derelict vehicle anywhere in city limits "for longer than 72 hours." Section 95.08, in the nuisance chapter, covers the same vehicles and says "for a period longer than 24 hours." Whichever an officer reads first, the safe reading is the shorter one. If you have a car in that state, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

When a wreck may stay
Both sections list exceptions. Under § 90.35 a wrecked car may stay longer only if:
- it is "within an enclosed building upon the property"
- it is at a licensed business that needs it, behind "a sightproof fence at least six feet in height"
- it is in a city storage place kept for such vehicles
Section 95.08 adds one that matters to a private seller. A junked car may stay if it "is being offered for sale, with appropriate signage indicating same, and being stored upon the private property of the owner of said vehicle, for a period not to exceed 14 days." Put a sign on it and you get two weeks, but only on your own land.
Section 95.01 reaches further than wrecks. It calls it a nuisance to use residential property "for the open storage of any inoperable or unlicensed vehicle," boats and trailers included. An unlicensed car that runs fine can still be a violation.
Police seizure
Section 70.06 is direct. The police department "shall seize, impound and store" any derelict or junk car, on private or public land, except where § 90.35 allows it. The same section covers cars that appear abandoned on a street or public place, cars parked illegally, and cars parked on the streets at night in violation of city rules.
The Dade City office
One Pasco County tax collector office that handles titles is at 14236 6th Street, Room 100, in Dade City. The phone is (352) 521-4360. Measured as the crow flies, it is near 9 miles north of central Zephyrhills.
Lost titles are common on cars that have sat. Florida wants a duplicate before a sale. The form is HSMV 82101, the Application for Duplicate/Lost-in-Transit/Paper Title, filed at a service center. The cost and the free mail-loss exception are in the questions below. If the title shows a relative's name instead of yours, start with car not in your name.
When the sale happens, sign over the title in the seller's block on its face. Florida needs no notary for this. Keep the plate for your next car. Your last step is the Notice of Sale on HSMV 82050, due 30 days after the transfer, which ends your liability for the car.
Getting an offer
Reach us online or at (877) 421-6008 with the car's model year, brand, model and mileage, whether it will start, and what title paperwork you hold. Crash damage is fine; wrecked or totaled explains more. Pickup can happen at a home lot, a body shop or a storage yard. Plant City is 16.0 miles away, and the Florida page covers statewide rules.
Questions people ask
- Which clock applies to a wrecked car in Zephyrhills, 72 hours or 24?
- The code carries both. Section 90.35 bars keeping a partially dismantled, wrecked, junked or derelict vehicle anywhere in city limits beyond 72 hours, with exceptions such as an enclosed building. Section 95.08, in the nuisance chapter, uses 24 hours for the same kinds of vehicles. Plan on the shorter one.
- Can I leave a junk car out while I try to sell it myself?
- Section 95.08 allows it for up to 14 days if the car is on the owner's own private property and has signs showing it is for sale.
- Can the police take a junk car off my property?
- Yes. Under Section 70.06, police are directed to seize, impound and store derelict or junk vehicles wherever they sit, unless Section 90.35 permits them.
- How much is a replacement Florida title?
- $75.25 on FLHSMV's fee table, or $10.00 more with Fast Title. There is no charge for a title lost in the mail if you apply under 180 days after it was issued.
