Selling a Ford EcoSport with a dead engine
If your EcoSport's engine quit, check one recall before you do anything else: 23V905, the oil pump drive belt. NHTSA's record says Ford let dealers replace engines that failed from it, at no charge. If that doesn't apply to your car, or the car has other damage, you can sell it whole. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

The EcoSport was only sold here for five model years, 2018 through 2022, so this page is short. Complaint and recall figures here reflect NHTSA's files on October 10, 2026.
A brief run from Chennai
The second-generation EcoSport launched in 2012 and was built in India, Thailand, Russia and Romania. In November 2016 Ford said it would supply the United States from India, and the cars sold here came from Ford India's Chennai plant. The facelift shown at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show became the 2018 model, the first year on sale in the US.
There were two engines. Front-drive models used the 1.0-liter EcoBoost, a turbocharged three-cylinder with an aluminum block. Four-wheel-drive models used a 2.0-liter four without a turbo. Both came with a 6-speed automatic.
Ford dropped the EcoSport in the US and India in mid-2022, as sales fell and Ford wound down its manufacturing in India. The Maverick pickup took over as Ford's entry-level model.
The oil pump belt: recall 23V905
Filed December 22, 2023, this campaign covers certain 2018-2022 EcoSports and 2016-2018 Focus models, 139,730 vehicles in all. The belt that drives the oil pump, or its tensioner, can fail. Oil pressure drops, and NHTSA says that "can result in an engine stall and a loss of power braking assist."
The fix is a new tensioner assembly and belt, free. The part that matters to a seller is the next sentence in the record: if the belt or tensioner already wrecked the engine, Ford authorized dealers to replace the engine assembly as an interim repair until final parts arrived, free for parts and labor.
The complaint file shows how much of the EcoSport's trouble sits in the engine. The two engine categories lead every model year from 2018 through 2021. Overall, 803 complaints name "engine and engine cooling" and 705 name "engine"; one complaint can name both, so those two don't add up. One 2018 owner reported "a sudden loss of engine oil pressure and loss of power while driving." NHTSA doesn't sort complaints by cause, so not every engine complaint is the belt. But 346 of the 1,855 complaints say the car had to be towed.
The other recalls
- 25V126 (February 2025): front axle half shafts can disconnect from the transmission on 18,648 EcoSports from 2021-2022. Drive power goes, and the car can roll away if the parking brake isn't on. Dealers inspect the shafts and replace them where needed; owner letters were mailed May 29, 2025.
- 25V442 (June 2025): a software error can leave the rearview camera blank, or keep showing it after you shift out of reverse, on 2020-2021 EcoSports and many other Fords, 200,237 vehicles. Dealers update the software free.
- Three small ones: 18V312 put European brake fluid cap labels on 273 cars sold in US territories; 19V023 covered 63 2019 EcoSports whose front seat frames may have been poorly welded; 20V791 replaced air bag modules missing booster propellant on 12 vehicles, including 2020 EcoSports.
By model year
A complaint is one report filed with NHTSA for that model year. The last year was cut short when sales ended in mid-2022, so its count is small.
| Model year | Complaints | Towed | Report a crash | Report a fire | Recall campaigns | Component named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2018 | 726 | 150 | 18 | 2 | 2 | Engine (314) |
| 2019 | 460 | 86 | 7 | 2 | 2 | Engine and engine cooling (207) |
| 2020 | 399 | 83 | 7 | 8 | 3 | Engine and engine cooling (177) |
| 2021 | 259 | 25 | 7 | 1 | 3 | Engine and engine cooling (127) |
| 2022 | 11 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 2 | Air bags, structure and engine (2 each) |
Fix it or sell it?
Engine gone? Start at a Ford dealer with the VIN and recall 23V905. If they'll replace the engine under the recall, you may end up with a running car worth keeping or selling outright. If the failure has some other cause, ask for the repair price in writing and set it against the going price for a running EcoSport with similar miles. Our blown engine guide walks through that call.
Lost drive on a 2021-2022? Ask about 25V126 before assuming the transmission is finished.
Still making payments? Many of these cars are young enough to carry a loan. See selling a car you still owe on for how the payoff and title release fit together.
Selling the EcoSport as it sits
- Gather the VIN, mileage and the story: what failed, when, and whether a dealer has looked at it.
- Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Name the pickup spot. Your driveway, a parking lot or a dealer's service bay all work, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention if it won't roll.
- Keep it whole. Leave the battery, the alloy wheels and the converter where they are, and tell us about anything already missing.
- Have the title ready, or the lender's payoff details if there's a loan. After the sale, check your state's plate rules in after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Will Ford replace an EcoSport engine that failed from the oil pump belt?
- NHTSA's record for recall 23V905 says Ford authorized dealers to replace the engine assembly, free for parts and labor, when a damaged oil pump belt or tensioner caused the failure. It was described as an interim repair until final parts were available. Take the VIN to a Ford dealer and ask how they handle it now, before you sell.
- Which EcoSports are in the oil pump belt recall?
- The campaign names certain 2018-2022 EcoSports, plus certain 2016-2018 Focus, 139,730 vehicles in all. Because it says certain, check your own VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a dealer.
- Why did Ford stop selling the EcoSport?
- It was dropped in the US and India in mid-2022 because sales fell and Ford stopped building cars in India. In the US, the Maverick pickup became Ford's entry-level model.
- My 2021 EcoSport lost drive and wanted to roll. Is there a recall?
- Yes, 25V126. On certain 2021-2022 EcoSports the front axle half shafts can come out of the transmission, so drive is lost, and an EcoSport left without the parking brake on can roll away. Dealers inspect the half shafts and replace them as needed, free.
- Can I sell my EcoSport if I still owe money on it?
- Yes, but the loan gets settled in the sale: a buyer can't take the title until your lender releases its lien. The car-loan guide linked on this page covers payoff and title release.
