Selling a Ford Expedition that won't run
Own a 2020 or 2021 Expedition? Check its VIN first. Two recalls, 22V346 and 25V628, tell owners to leave the truck outdoors, well clear of houses and garages, because a short in the battery junction box can start an engine fire with the truck switched off.

- 1997-2006: spark plugs blowing out of or breaking in the 5.4-liter V8 (owner reports, no recall found)
- 2012: an automatic that can drop into first gear (recall 16V248)
- 2015-2017: a front blower motor that can start an interior fire (recall 22V648)
- 2018-2021: 10-speed shift and park problems, including a June 2026 park pawl recall
- 2018-2022: seat belt pretensioners that fire and lock the belt

Generation by generation
1997-2002: Wayne-built, and prone to switch fires
The first Expedition came from Wayne, Michigan, with a 4.6 or 5.4 Triton V8 and a four-speed automatic. These six model years hold 4,443 of NHTSA's 9,356 Expedition complaints and 587 of its 710 fire reports.
The fire recalls for these years center on the speed control deactivation switch, which can corrode, overheat and ignite. Recall 05V017 (January 2005) covered 738,490 2000 Expeditions and Ford pickups and warned of fire with the ignition off and the truck parked. Recall 05V388 (September 2005) took in 4.5 million 1997-2002 Expeditions and Ford trucks. Under both, dealers first disconnected the switch. The 05V017 remedy was a new switch once parts arrived in April 2005, and 05V388 owners could come back from February 2006 to have cruise control reconnected. For the later switch recalls, NBC News reported in 2006, dealers installed a fused wiring harness. One owner's switch, on the brake master cylinder, caught fire during an oil change with the key off. Another truck burned in a driveway at least half an hour after it was parked.
Spark plugs are the other early story. Engine and engine cooling is the top complaint on the 1999, at 233 of 946. Owners describe a plug blowing out while driving, the engine losing power and stalling, and stripped threads and a wrecked coil pack left behind.
Four other early recalls are worth checking on a 1997-2001 truck: lug nuts that may not clamp the wheel (98V095, 1,520,000 1997-1998 Expeditions and light pickups), a shift cable that can slip out of its column bracket (97V171), trailer hitch bolts that can lose clamp load (00V073) and TRW front belt buckles on the 2001 (01V227).
2003-2006: new rear suspension, same plug worry
The second generation added independent rear suspension and, for 2005-2006, a three-valve 5.4. It drew 1,525 complaints over four years and only three recall campaigns. Air bags lead the 2004's complaints, 44 of 296. Plugs return on the 2006, where engine complaints lead: one owner's plugs broke apart at a tune-up, and the shop could not get cylinder 1 to hold a new one.
2007-2017: eleven quiet years
The third generation moved from Wayne to Kentucky Truck Assembly in January 2009 and traded the 5.4 V8 for the 3.5 EcoBoost V6 in 2015. Its 1,538 complaints are about a sixth of the total. Recalls to check:
- 08V057: weak spots in the fuel rail cross-over hose on 5.4-liter engines, including the 2007; fuel seeping near an ignition source could burn
- 16V248: the 2012's automatic can downshift to first without warning, and the rear tires can slide or lock
- 22V648: the front blower motor behind the glove box can fail on 198,482 2015-2017 Expeditions and their Lincoln twins
Ford also stretched coverage on the 6R80 automatic's molded leadframe for 2012-2013 Expeditions (programs 16N02 and 19N01) to "10 years of service or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle, whichever occurs first." That clock began with the first owner, so most of these trucks are already outside it.
2018-2024: the 10-speed and the belts
Built at Kentucky Truck Plant, every 2018-2024 Expedition has the 3.5 EcoBoost and a 10-speed automatic. NHTSA lists 42 recall campaigns across these years. The power train leads complaints on the 2018, 2019 and 2020; on the 2020 it's 239 of 421. Owners describe harsh shifts, a sudden loss of drive as if the transmission had let go, and a truck slipping into Neutral by itself.
Three recalls involve the shifter and Park. 18V214 and 20V197 cover a shift cable clip that may not be seated, so the lever can show Park when the transmission is in another gear. 26V402, filed in June 2026, covers 741,195 vehicles, among them 2018-2021 Expeditions and their Lincoln twins, whose park pawl can engage while moving.
The pretensioner recall grew in three steps: 24V099 (77,574 2018-2020 trucks), 25V197 (112,951) and 26V344 (419,967 2018-2022 trucks). The pretensioner can fire and lock the belt. One 2019 owner said the driver's went off at about 70 mph with no crash.
Under 22V346, whose 66,221 count includes 2021 Lincoln vehicles as well as Expeditions, the fix is an inspection or replacement of the battery junction box and removal of a ground wire. 25V628 adds 4,632 2020 Expeditions and Lincolns. On 2022-2024 trucks, 25V314 covers front brake lines that can touch the air cleaner outlet pipe, 273,789 vehicles in all.
2025 on
The fifth generation, built in Louisville since January 2025, has 47 complaints so far across the 2025 and 2026 model years.
Complaints, fire reports and recalls by year
NHTSA's files as of October 10, 2026. "Fire reports" are complaints flagged as involving a fire. A campaign that covers several years is counted on each of them.

NHTSA files three complaints under 1996, the year before the first Expedition model year. Nearly three in four fire reports come from 1997-2001 trucks.
Fix it, or let it go?
The records we used carry no Expedition repair prices, so get a written estimate and compare it with what the same truck brings in running shape.
- Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 2018-2022 truck, belt, park and junction box campaigns may still be open.
- Blown-out plug on a 5.4? Owners report stripped threads, which is more than a tune-up. The blown engine guide covers when a big engine bill stops making sense.
- Already burned? See selling a fire-damaged car.
Getting it picked up
Have the VIN, mileage and title handy, then get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008. Tell us what's wrong, where the truck sits and whether its wheels turn, so the right truck comes for it.
Leave it whole. The catalytic converters, wheels and battery stay on, and anything already removed should be mentioned because it changes the offer. On pickup day, the signed title and keys go with the truck. Whether the plates go with you depends on the state; after you sell explains each one.
Questions people ask
- Which Expedition years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The first-generation trucks. The 1999 has 946 complaints as of October 10, 2026, followed by the 2000 (890), the 1997 (853) and the 1998 (836). The busiest later year is the 2003, with 615.
- Was there a recall for 5.4-liter spark plugs blowing out?
- We found none. Owners of 1997-2006 trucks describe plugs ejecting or breaking, but no spark plug campaign appears in NHTSA's Expedition recall list, and we found no Ford program for it.
- My 2020 or 2021 Expedition is under a park-outside recall. Will you still take it?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, recalled or not. Say which recall it has when you ask for an offer. Until the repair is done, 22V346 and 25V628 tell owners to park "outside and away from structures and other vehicles."
- When will the 26V402 park pawl repair be ready?
- NHTSA's record says the remedy is expected in April 2027. Ford mailed interim owner letters on July 10, 2026. The repair is a powertrain software update plus replacement of any damaged parts.
