Selling an F-150 that's done working
An F-150 with a dead transmission, a blown engine or a frame too rusty to pass inspection can still be sold as a whole truck. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickups count. Pickup is free anywhere in the US, and nothing has to come off first.

What goes wrong depends on which of eight generations you own. This page covers the 1984 through 2026 model years: 39,510 complaints filed with NHTSA and 182 Ford recall campaigns. Find your era below, then your year in the table.
What breaks on an F-150, era by era
1984-1996: inline sixes and Windsor V8s
Three generations share these years, mostly with the 4.9-liter six or the 5.0 and 5.8 V8s, and 3,889 complaints between them. Electrical faults are named most from 1984 through 1988. The fuel system leads from 1989 to 1993, and hydraulic brakes lead on the 1994 and 1995.
1997-2003: gaskets, fuel straps and fires
The 1997 redesign brought a 4.2 V6 and the 4.6 and 5.4 Triton V8s. That first year drew 2,773 complaints, more than any F-150 but the 2013. In the 1997 records, 220 of 576 engine complaints mention a head or intake gasket, and no recall matched them. Another 130 of 317 tire complaints name Firestone.
Fire is this era's other thread. On the 2000, 344 of 1,078 complaints report one. In January 2005 Ford recalled 2000 F-150s with speed control, and that September it recalled 3.8 million 1994-2002 pickups and SUVs over the cruise control deactivation switch. When Ford widened the switch recall in August 2006 to 1.2 million Super Duty trucks, vans and SUVs, NBC News reported the switch system "could corrode over time, overheat and ignite." Dealers fixed it with a fused wiring harness on the switch.
Recall 11V385 (July 2011) covers 1.1 million vehicles with corroded fuel tank straps: certain 1997-2003 F-150s, the 2004 Heritage, some 1997-1999 F-250s and 2002-2003 Lincoln Blackwoods. It applies only to trucks "originally sold, or currently registered in" a list of states that includes Connecticut, Illinois and Iowa. NHTSA warns that "one or both straps may fail allowing the fuel lines to separate from the tank." Earlier campaigns fixed lug nuts on 1997-1998 trucks that could let a wheel come off (98V095), and a front fuel line that could rub through on 1997s built in Kansas City or Norfolk (00V231).
2004-2008: windows that drop into the door
The 11th generation ran a 4.2 V6, a 4.6 V8 or a three-valve 5.4 V8, with four-speed automatics. The 2004 drew 2,029 complaints, and NHTSA's tally puts 814 under visibility. Owners mean the windows. In our pull of the complaint texts, 543 visibility reports name a window regulator, often with the glass falling inside the door. We found no recall for it.
Two recalls stand out. 11V107 covers 1,325,000 trucks, 2004-2006 F-150s plus the 2006 Lincoln Mark LT, whose clockspring jumper wire could chafe and fire the driver's air bag with no crash. 08V208 covers brake booster vacuum hoses that can swell on 2005-2006 trucks with the three-valve 5.4.
2009-2014: EcoBoost and the six-speed
This generation added the 3.5 EcoBoost V6, a 3.7 V6, the 5.0 Coyote and a 6.2 V8, most paired with the 6R80 six-speed automatic. The 2013 has the most complaints of any F-150 year, 2,987, and 1,142 of them are power train. Across 2011-2013 it's 2,332 power train complaints out of 6,961.
Recall 19V075 (February 2019) reached 1,263,051 trucks from 2011-2013. NHTSA's notice says "the transmission may unexpectedly downshift into first gear, regardless of vehicle speed." Dealers reprogram the powertrain control module. Recall 24V444 later covered the 2014 for the same first-gear drop, caused by a lost output shaft speed sensor signal.
Steering drew 365 complaints on the 2011. Owners of 4,647 trucks from 2014, built May 26 to June 19 of that year, were told not to drive them until dealers replaced the power steering gear (14V316). Its motor position sensor magnet may have been put in wrong, which can cost all steering control.
2015-2020: the aluminum truck
The 2015 was Ford's first production vehicle with an aluminum body, set on a steel frame. Engines included the 2.7 and 3.5 EcoBoost and the 5.0 V8, plus a 3.3 V6 and a 3.0 Power Stroke diesel for 2018-2020. The 10R80 ten-speed arrived with the 2017 Raptor.
Recalls climbed: 45 campaigns touch these six years. In April 2026 Ford recalled 1,392,935 trucks from 2015-2017 (26V237) whose transmission can drop into second gear without warning. Others cover brake master cylinders leaking into the booster on 3.5 EcoBoost trucks from 2014-2017 (20V332) and seat belt pretensioners whose sparks could light carpet in the B-pillar on 2015-2018 trucks (18V568). Power train leads complaints on the 2018 (899) and 2019 (654), but no recall or bulletin we found explains them.
2021-2026: hybrid option, record recalls
The current truck added the PowerBoost hybrid, a 3.5 EcoBoost with an electric motor, and every engine uses the ten-speed. The 2021 has 29 recall campaigns, more than any other F-150 year. Among them: an electric parking brake that can apply on its own on 870,701 single-exhaust trucks from 2021-2023 (23V509), and wiper motors that quit on 2021-2022 trucks (22V842). In September 2026 Ford recalled 2023-2027 trucks whose fuel tank may "leak fuel, or detach from the vehicle while driving" (26V578).
F-150 complaints and recalls by model year
Counts reflect NHTSA's records on October 10, 2026. The fire column shows how many of each year's complaints mention a fire. The first three rows group whole generations, and their recall figure counts each campaign once even when it spans several years.

On the 2000 and 2001, vehicle speed control ranks first or second among the systems owners name, the system the switch recalls dealt with.
Repair it or sell it?
- Open recalls. Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup and ask a Ford dealer about anything still open.
- 6R80 trouble on a 2011-2013. Program 19N01 extended the transmission's molded leadframe "to 10 years of service or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle, whichever occurs first." Trucks past 150,000 miles were never covered, and the ten years have run out on nearly all the rest, so the program will rarely apply today. The bad transmission guide walks through it.
- A failed engine on a 2021-2022. Program 24N12 replaces the long block once, at no cost, for a cracked valve on certain Dearborn-built trucks that went through the 24S55 inspection. It runs ten years or 150,000 miles, so a dealer VIN lookup should come before any engine bill.
- Everything else. Set a written quote beside what the same truck brings running. When the repair eats most of that, selling it as it sits is simpler. Our blown engine page covers that call for engines.
How to sell your F-150 whole
- Gather the VIN, mileage, cab and bed, engine, drive type (2WD or 4x4) and the problem.
- Request an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us the truck's location, and if it can roll and steer. Flat tires, a missing wheel or a tight garage are worth mentioning so the right truck shows up.
- Leave it complete: tailgate, converters, wheels and battery. Pulled parts lower the offer, so list anything already gone.
- Sign the title over once the F-150 is chained down, with your ID on hand. Your state decides if the plates stay with you; the after you sell table gives each rule.

Questions people ask
- Which F-150 model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2013 tops the list with 2,987 complaints as of October 10, 2026. After it come the 1997 (2,773), the 2018 (2,316), the 2011 (2,191) and the 2016 (2,067). The last few model years have been on the road for less time, so their small counts don't prove much yet.
- Is the 2011-2013 downshift recall the same thing as Ford's transmission warranty extension?
- No, they are two separate fixes. Recall 19V075 is a free reprogram of the powertrain control module for trucks that can drop into first gear at speed. Program 19N01 stretched coverage of the 6R80's molded leadframe. Its ten-year limit has now passed on nearly every truck it covered, and trucks over 150,000 miles never qualified.
- Will you buy an F-150 that can't move under its own power?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes trucks of any size. Mention 2WD or 4x4, whether the wheels turn and the truck's location when you request an offer. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- The engine in my 2021 or 2022 F-150 failed. Could Ford cover it?
- It might. Ford's program 24N12 offers a one-time long block replacement at no cost for a cracked engine valve on certain 2021-2022 F-150s built at the Dearborn plant that completed the 24S55 valve inspection. Coverage lasts ten years or 150,000 miles from the truck's original warranty start, ending at whichever limit it reaches first. A Ford dealer can tell you from the VIN whether your truck qualifies.
- Should I take off the tailgate or the converters before I sell?
- No. You sell the whole car as it sits, and on a truck that means the tailgate, catalytic converters, wheels and battery stay on. If something is already missing, say so when you ask, because it changes the offer.
