Selling a broken-down Ford Maverick
A Maverick with a failed hybrid engine, a dead 12-volt system or crash damage can be sold whole, as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes newer pickups like this one. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The Maverick is young, though, and some of its worst failures are covered by Ford programs that still run. Check those first. This page covers the 2022 through 2026 model years: 1,199 complaints filed with NHTSA and 46 recall campaigns.
A short history
Production started September 2, 2021 at the Hermosillo plant in Sonora, Mexico, and the truck went on sale as a 2022. It's a unibody crew-cab pickup. The standard engine is a 2.5-liter hybrid, built in Chihuahua, Mexico, making 191 hp with a continuously variable transmission. The option is a 250 hp 2.0 EcoBoost with an eight-speed automatic. Through 2024, all-wheel drive came only with the EcoBoost.
The 2025 refresh made all-wheel drive and the 4,000-pound tow package available on the hybrid for the first time. Ford's 2025 spec sheet lists five trims: XL, XLT, Lobo, Lariat and Tremor. The 2022-2024 trucks hold 1,136 of the 1,199 complaints and 35 of the campaigns; the 2025-2026 trucks have 63 complaints and 13 campaigns so far.
The hybrid engine: recall first, then coverage
Recall 23V380 (May 2023) covers 2022-2023 Mavericks among 125,322 vehicles with the 2.5 hybrid or plug-in engine. If the engine fails, "engine oil and fuel vapor may be released into the engine compartment," where heat can light it. NHTSA's notice tells owners to park and shut the engine off quickly if they hear unexpected engine noises, lose power or see smoke. On the Maverick, the fix is a software update to the powertrain control module. A follow-up, 25V345, covers 1,809 vehicles repaired wrong the first time.
Ford backed that with program 23N06, dated June 25, 2024. For trucks outside the normal powertrain warranty, it replaces the engine long block once, free, "for 10 years or 100,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle, whichever occurs first." Ford names "a faulty connecting rod bearing" detected by the powertrain control module as the cause. Trucks already past those limits had until July 31, 2025, and coverage passes to later owners. For a 2022 or 2023 hybrid under 100,000 miles, that makes a failed engine a dealer question first.
Other recalls worth knowing
Shifting into neutral
Recall 24V330 covers hybrid powertrain software that "may cause the vehicle to shift into neutral unexpectedly." Its count of 9,312 is for the whole campaign: 2022-2024 Mavericks, 2020-2022 Escapes and 2021-2022 Lincoln Corsairs. In December 2025, 25V881 added 87 Maverick and 2020 Escape hybrids. Power train leads the 2023's complaints, and in the records filed under the plain Maverick name, 36 of 94 power train complaints mention the transmission, shifting, neutral, jerking, power loss or the hybrid system.
The 12-volt battery
Three campaigns deal with the small battery. 24V267 covers control modules on 456,565 Bronco Sports and Mavericks that may miss a drop in the 12-volt charge, which can kill the hazard lights or drive power. 25V158 caught 48,041 Bronco Sports and Mavericks fixed wrong under it. 25V019 covers 272,817 Bronco Sports and Mavericks whose 12-volt battery "may experience degradation and suddenly fail." Electrical problems top the 2022's complaints, 153 of 616, and 17 of 42 electrical complaints in the plain-Maverick records mention a battery.
Do not drive: front ball joints
Recall 26V340 (May 2026) covers 4,653 vehicles, a count that joins 2022-2026 Mavericks with 2021-2026 Bronco Sports. Their front lower control arm ball joints may have been installed or repaired wrong at the plant. NHTSA's notice says "owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is completed." Owner letters went out September 2, 2026.
Launch-year and body items
The 2022 has 29 recall campaigns, the most of any Maverick year. Side-curtain air bags on 64,974 trucks might not deploy properly (22V594). On 5,456 trucks, installing the spray-in bedliner may have drilled holes in the fuel tank (21V976). Software recalls cover a cluster that may not light warnings on 2022-2023 hybrids (24V140), tail lights the body module can switch off (24V293), and a rear camera image that can freeze (24V684). For 2025-2026, 25V884 covers an instrument panel cover that can break apart when the air bag deploys.
Maverick complaints and recalls by model year
Counts from NHTSA as of October 10, 2026. NHTSA files hybrids under a second name, Maverick Hybrid; both names are counted here. Top areas leave out NHTSA's "unknown or other" category.
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls | Top complaint areas |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 616 | 29 | Electrical 153, power train 124, service brakes 95 |
| 2023 | 344 | 22 | Power train 83, electrical 65, engine 47 |
| 2024 | 176 | 16 | Electrical 34, power train 34, service brakes 16 |
| 2025 | 48 | 12 | Electrical 9, service brakes 6, engine 6 |
| 2026 | 15 | 7 | Service brakes 4, electrical 3 |
Many campaigns cover more than one year, so the recall column sums to 86 while the truck has 46 distinct campaigns. Service brakes rank third on the 2022. The two ABS recalls we found for that year, 22V730 and 25V124, fix module software that can turn on the brake lights with no pedal pressed.
Repair, claim or sell?
- Failed hybrid engine, 2022-2023. Have a Ford dealer check the VIN against 23N06 before you pay for an engine or sell.
- Other powertrain trouble. Ford's warranty page lists 5 years or 60,000 miles of powertrain coverage and 8 years or 100,000 miles on hybrid components for its new vehicles. Your truck's warranty booklet has the terms that apply to it.
- Open recalls. Run your VIN through nhtsa.gov/recalls. If 26V340 is open, don't drive the truck in; call the dealer.
- Crash damage or a repair nobody covers. Get a written estimate and set it against the truck's value running. See blown engine for how to weigh an engine.
Selling your Maverick whole
- Note the VIN, mileage, hybrid or EcoBoost, front- or all-wheel drive, and what's wrong.
- Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe its location and whether it will still roll. A Maverick that slipped into neutral and stopped on a side street, or one sitting at a dealer's service lot, both work; tell us which.
- Still financed? The loan has to be cleared before the title can change hands. Our guide to selling with a loan owed walks through the payoff.
- Leave it complete, and have the title or loan details and your ID at pickup.

Questions people ask
- My 2022 or 2023 Maverick Hybrid engine failed. Will Ford replace it?
- Check first. Ford's program 23N06 offers a one-time engine long block replacement, parts and labor, for 2022-2023 Mavericks with the 2.5 hybrid, lasting ten years or 100,000 miles from when the truck's warranty started. The cause it names is a faulty connecting rod bearing flagged by the engine computer. Coverage follows the truck to later owners, so a dealer only needs the VIN.
- Which Maverick recall says not to drive the truck?
- Recall 26V340, filed in May 2026. It covers 4,653 vehicles in all, 2022-2026 Mavericks plus 2021-2026 Bronco Sports. Their front lower control arm ball joints may have been installed or repaired wrong at the plant, which can let the arm come loose from the knuckle. Owners are told not to drive until the remedy is done; dealers inspect and repair the joints as needed.
- Why do some Maverick Hybrids lose power or slip into neutral?
- Recall 24V330 found that hybrid powertrain software could shift into neutral without warning. Its 9,312 vehicles include 2020-2022 Escapes and 2021-2022 Lincoln Corsairs as well as 2022-2024 Mavericks. 25V881 added 87 more Maverick and 2020 Escape hybrids. The fix is a software update. Separate recalls cover the 12-volt battery, which can fail suddenly or go undetected when low and also cut drive power.
- Can I sell a Maverick I'm still paying off?
- Usually, yes. The loan has to be paid off, including any gap if the truck is worth less than you owe, before the lender releases the title. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, newer trucks included, and our guide to selling with a loan still owed explains the payoff steps.
