This page covers 1984 through 2026 Mustangs: 10,072 complaints filed with NHTSA and 82 recall campaigns. If yours is a 2005-2014, read the next section before anything else.

2005-2014: the air bag inflators come first

Certain Mustangs from these years fall under Takata inflator recalls, and NHTSA's recall records tell owners of those cars not to drive them until the repair is done. Recall 15V319 covers the driver's air bag on 1,018,622 cars: 2005-2014 Mustangs built April 6, 2004 to June 21, 2014, plus 2005-2006 Ford GTs. The inflator "may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture." Passenger-side campaigns followed: 16V384, 17V024, 18V046 and 19V001. These reach only certain cars, chosen by model year and by where a car was "originally sold in or ever registered," with states such as Florida, Texas and California named. A VIN check settles whether yours is in. Ford's 19S01 bulletin says the propellant breaks down with heat and humidity, and a ruptured inflator can send parts flying at the people inside.

Owners filed 2,132 air bag complaints across these ten model years. On the 2007, 210 of 342 air bag complaints name Takata, many of them about waiting for parts.

For a seller, this is simple. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. If the repair is still open, don't drive the car to anyone, and mention it in your offer request.

Five generations, five different weak spots

Fox body, 1984-1993: switches and fuel lines

The Fox Mustang ran a 2.3 four (turbocharged in the 1984-1986 SVO), a 3.8 V6 on mid-1980s cars, or the 5.0 V8. It was built in Dearborn and at San Jose Assembly in Milpitas, Calif. These ten model years hold just 651 complaints, yet 198 of them report a fire, and electrical faults lead every year but 1985.

Recall 96V071 covered an ignition switch that could short inside on 1988-1993 cars, part of a 7.9-million-vehicle campaign. NHTSA warned it "could cause overheating, smoke, and possibly fire in the steering column area." Earlier, 87V139 fixed spring-lock fuel line couplings on 1986-1987 cars that could come apart and leak.

SN95, 1994-2004: head gaskets

The 1994 redesign kept the 3.8 V6 and, for two years, the 5.0 V8; the GT moved to a 4.6 overhead-cam V8 in 1996. Engine trouble peaks in the first two years: 483 of the 988 complaints on the 1994-1995 fall under engine and engine cooling. In the 1995 records, 202 of 341 engine complaints mention a head gasket, and no recall we found covers it.

Recall 01V390 is about a different part on 1995 cars with the 3.8 or 5.0: a cooling fan whose seized bearing could melt the motor's connector and start an underhood fire. Two other campaigns matter. 00V349 covers the parking brake on 1994-2001 manual cars: if one is parked with the brake "not fully applied and not in first gear" and the self-adjuster skips a tooth or two, it could move on some grades. 97V180 covers hood panels on 1994-1996 cars whose bond could tear in a minor front-end crash.

S197, 2005-2014: air bags, gauges and the MT82

Built at Flat Rock, Mich., this car started with a 4.0 V6 and a three-valve 4.6 V8. For 2011 the GT got the 5.0 Coyote and the base car a 3.7 V6, with the MT82 six-speed manual or the 6R80 six-speed automatic.

The 2005 has more complaints than any other Mustang year, 868. Air bags aside, 153 of its 281 electrical complaints mention the speedometer, usually with other gauges dead in the cluster. We found no recall for it. On the 2011, 169 of 199 power train complaints mention gears or shifting and 65 mention grinding; one owner names the MT82. We found no recall or extension for that either. Certain 2012 automatics were in Ford's program 16N02, which extended coverage of the 6R80's molded leadframe to 10 years or 150,000 miles. Those ten years have passed.

S550, 2015-2023: oil hoses and corroded belts

The S550 brought the 2.3 EcoBoost four, kept the 3.7 V6 through 2017 and the 5.0 V8, and added Shelby GT350 and GT500 models with 5.2 V8s. Recalls rose to 34 campaigns across these nine years.

On 2015-2017 cars, 16V779 covers an oil cooler hose that can come off (6,582 cars); NHTSA says "a sudden loss of engine oil may cause engine failure." Recall 25V614 exists because "water and road salt may corrode the front seat belt anchor pretensioner cables" on 332,778 cars. On the 2017 the most-named category is back-over prevention, the rearview camera system that recall 22V082 fixes on 2015-2017 cars. Later recalls cover a brake fluid sensor (23V727, 2020-2023) and a steering torque sensor that can turn the wheel side to side on its own (24V493, 2022-2023).

S650, 2024-2026: a dozen recalls in year one

The current car offers the 2.3 EcoBoost or the 5.0 V8 with a ten-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. Ford's 2025 spec sheet rates them at 315 hp, 480 to 486 hp in the GT and 500 hp in the Dark Horse. The 2024 has only 82 complaints but 12 recalls. One told owners of 66 cars not to drive until a possibly loose brake pedal was fixed (23V800). Others cover a clutch line that can melt against the exhaust (24V394), rear knuckles with casting defects (24V593), water in the body control module that kills exterior lights (25V546), and engine-bay ground connections that can fracture and cut drive power (26V547). On 2026 cars, 26V548 covers piston domes that may fail.

Mustang complaints and recalls by model year

NHTSA counts as of October 10, 2026. The Fox-body row combines ten model years, and its recall figure counts each campaign once. "Leading complaint area" is the NHTSA category named most often that year.

Worth fixing?

An open air bag recall shouldn't decide a sale by itself. Ford's 19S01 bulletin says the work is done "at no charge to the vehicle owner." The harder calls are engines and gearboxes. A 1994-1995 car with a failed head gasket, a 2011-2012 manual that grinds, or a 2012 automatic past its leadframe coverage all come down to one test: the written repair quote against what the car brings once it runs. When those numbers get close, selling the Mustang as it sits saves money and time. Our blown engine guide walks through that test, and wrecked car covers crash damage.

Selling a Mustang whole

Gather the VIN, odometer reading, engine, gearbox and a plain account of the trouble. Then request an offer online or call (877) 421-6008. Let us know the car's location and whether it can roll, and mention a torn convertible top, flat tires or a tight garage. Leave the wheels, exhaust and converters on, because pulled parts change the offer. Bring out the title and your driver's license when the truck arrives; after you sell covers plates and paperwork by state.

Questions people ask

Which Mustang model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2005 leads with 868 (count as of October 10, 2026). Behind it: the 1995 (616), the 2007 (615), the 2006 (575) and the 2012 (469). Air bags drive the 2005-2007 numbers; on the 1995 it is the engine and cooling system.
Can I sell a 2005-2014 Mustang that still has an open Takata recall?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and a Mustang waiting on an inflator is one of them. Selling it whole means nobody has to drive it anywhere. Say the recall is open when you ask. If you'd rather fix it first, Ford's 19S01 bulletin says dealers do the inflator work at no charge to the owner.
Did Ford ever recall the 1994-1995 Mustang for head gaskets?
Not that we found. In the 1995 records, 202 of 341 engine complaints mention a head gasket, but the only recall nearby, 01V390, is for the cooling fan motor. We also found no head gasket warranty extension.
Is there a recall or extended warranty for the MT82 manual?
We found neither. The evidence is owner complaints: on the 2011, 169 of 199 power train complaints mention gears or shifting and 65 mention grinding. If yours grinds and the repair quote is high, compare it with what the car is worth running before you spend.
Should I pull the V8, the wheels or the exhaust before I sell?
No. You sell the whole car as it sits. A complete car is easier to price, and parts already removed lower the offer, so list anything that's gone.
