Junk and dead cars in Alpharetta

Alpharetta has no tarp exception. Section 2.5 of the Unified Development Code reads: "No automobile, truck, motorcycle, trailer or other vehicle of any kind or type without current license plates shall be parked or stored on any lot in a residential district except in a completely enclosed building." A covered car behind the house, which some nearby cities allow, does not pass here. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, so if the garage is full, you can sell the whole car as it sits. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The two lines in Section 2.5

For a home in a residential district, the code draws two lines:

  • On the lot: no vehicle without current plates, except inside a completely enclosed building. A carport is not completely enclosed.
  • On the street: "No inoperable vehicle shall be parked or stored on a street within a residential district."

Those rules overlap. An expired tag puts a car on the wrong side of the first line even if it starts. A car that will not start cannot wait it out at the curb.

Section 2.7 adds a rule for certain business uses: their parking lots may not hold inoperable vehicles.

Title office and the long drive

Alpharetta is a Fulton County city. The tax commissioner's office we looked at is on Pryor Street in downtown Atlanta (No. 141 SW, phone 404-613-6100), roughly 23 miles south as the crow flies. Fulton may run other offices, worth a look before a trip that long.

Georgia title steps for an Alpharetta seller

If you have the title, each owner prints and signs in the Seller block on the reverse, and the mileage goes in as whole miles. Once the date is written, leave it: a changed purchase date can draw a $10 penalty, and erasures may void the document. In Alpharetta, the person who buys it gets 7 days to put it in their name and register it. If nobody applies for a title within 30 days, a $10.00 penalty kicks in.

Lost the title in Alpharetta? Turn in Form MV-1 at the tag office, which costs $8.00. Any lien must be released first, so a financed car needs the lender's release before anything else. See still owe on the loan and junk car with no title.

Either way, the plate goes home with you, and the registration gets cancelled in DRIVES or on Form MV-18J.

Getting an offer

Use the site or call (877) 421-6008. The offer form asks the few things we need about your Alpharetta car. A truck can pick up from inside the garage, off the driveway, or wherever the expired-tag car ended up. Nearby: Johns Creek and Roswell. Statewide: Georgia.

Questions people ask

Is a car cover enough for an unplated car in Alpharetta?
No. Section 2.5 of the Unified Development Code allows a vehicle without current license plates on a residential lot only inside a completely enclosed building. A cover or a carport does not meet that.
What about leaving a non-running car at the curb?
Section 2.5 says no inoperable vehicle may be parked or stored on a street in a residential district.
I lost the title and the car has a loan on it. What first?
A replacement title is filed on Form MV-1 at the tag office for $8.00, and any lien must be released. The lender's release comes before the new title.
