Dead and junk cars in Milton

Milton puts a number on junk cars: two. Section 9.1.4 of the Unified Development Code says "Parking or storage of a junk or salvage vehicle is not allowed, except that no more than two such vehicles are allowed if parked or stored in a garage or carport not visible from a street or adjacent residential property." A third one, or any one sitting in plain view, is out of bounds.

Milton spreads over 38.587 square miles. Wherever in it your dead car sits, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Three rules that stack

The zoning cap. Besides the two-car junk limit, Section 9.1.4 says "The visible storage or parking of more than four vehicles at a single-family dwelling is not allowed." In single-family and agricultural districts used as a home, vehicles may park only on conforming spaces. That means no more than two spaces beside a front-entry garage or carport, or at the end of a driveway when no garage or carport exists, unenclosed spaces in a side yard, and no more than half of a required rear yard.

The property code. Section 10-267 says "no inoperative or unlicensed motor vehicle shall be parked, kept or stored on any premises." No vehicle may be "in a state of major disassembly, disrepair, or in the process of being stripped or dismantled." Major overhaul and body work are allowed only "inside a structure or similarly enclosed area designed and approved for such purposes."

The 30-day clock. For homes, Section 48-585 sets a deadline: "Vehicles and trailers of any kind without current license plates, or vehicles, trailers or equipment permitted to remain in an inoperable condition for more than 30 days shall not be parked or stored on or about any property within a residential-zoned district." Vehicles inside an enclosed structure are exempt, as are ones "appropriately covered" and placed the way that section lays out.

So a dead car in open view on a Milton lot can break all three rules at once: it is junk, it may push the visible count over four, and after 30 days the residential clock has run out too.

The Fulton County tag office is a drive

Milton is in Fulton County. For Milton, we checked Fulton's office at 141 Pryor Street SW in Atlanta (phone 404-613-6100). In a straight line it is roughly 27 miles south of downtown Milton. There may be other branches, so see the tax commissioner's site before going.

You may not need to go at all. A Milton seller signs the assignment section printed on the title's back. You can cancel the registration online at DRIVES e-Services without going anywhere. The trip comes in when the title is lost: a replacement costs $8.00 and an MV-1 form, filed in person once any lien is cleared. Cars from 1985 or older have no title at all. They sell with a bill of sale.

Plates, insurance and that last letter

Pull the plate before the car leaves; Georgia plates stay with the seller. Cancel the registration before you cancel insurance, as the Department of Revenue advises. A later notice of pending suspension can be ignored, per the state, if the car really was sold. Keep a copy of the signed title as proof. The rest is in after you sell, and the Georgia page has state rules.
