Selling a dead or junk car in Fayetteville, GA
A car can be junked under Fayetteville rules even when nothing is wrong with it. Section 58-32 of the city code defines an "abandoned or junked motor vehicle" as one "incapable of operating under its own power, or which does not have a current license plate or tag." That second half catches people at sale time, because Georgia plates stay with the seller. A car parked outside with its tag removed fits the definition, so pull the plate on the day the car leaves rather than a week before. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, you sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Five days from the notice
Section 58-32 bars the owner, tenant, lessee or occupant of any lot in the city from keeping such a car outside unless it is "completely enclosed in a building." The section adds a further exception for certain premises. The rule reaches dead furniture, appliances, machinery and loose parts as well, so a yard with a dead sedan and an old washer is one problem, not two.
When the chief of police, or anyone acting by his authority, finds a violation, the chief, the city manager or the city clerk gives "five days' notice" to remove it. When a Fayetteville car stays put past that point, officers may charge the owner "as for the violation of any city ordinance."
24 hours at the curb
Pushing the car onto the street does not buy time. Section 82-206 says a car "parked or left unattended upon the public streets of the City of Fayetteville for more than 24 hours shall be presumed to have been abandoned by the owner." Marked loading zones are off limits too. Section 82-142 allows nothing there but quick loading and unloading while the zone rules are in effect.
A car that died at a garage has its own state clock. Under Georgia's rules, a car nobody collects from a dealer, a garage or a wrecker yard for 30 days is abandoned.
The tag office on Stonewall Avenue
Fayette County runs a tag office at 140 W. Stonewall Avenue, phone (770) 461-3611, and that is the one we checked. The office sits under a mile east of downtown Fayetteville by direct line, on the street that City Hall shares at 210 Stonewall Avenue West. We did not look into other Fayette offices.
Fayette County is inside Georgia's emissions program. To get 2026 tags, 2002-2023 gasoline cars and light trucks must be tested. The three newest model years skip it.
Signing it over in Fayette County
A Fayetteville seller completes the assignment on the title's back with care, prints and signs, and gives the mileage in whole numbers. Georgia warns that erasures or changes can void the title, and tampering with the sale date carries a $10 penalty of its own. Each joint owner prints and signs as well.
Before the Fayetteville buyer drives off with the title, copy it, and copy any bill of sale too. The new owner has 7 days after the date of sale to title and register it. Finally, cancel the Fayetteville tag online at DRIVES e-Services, or bring a paper MV-18J to the Stonewall Avenue office. Do that before calling your insurer. The after you sell page has the full checklist.
