Selling a dead or junk car in Peachtree City

Peachtree City writes golf carts into its junk rules, and the same test catches cars. Section 42-36 defines an inoperable vehicle as "any vehicle or golf cart that is improperly registered, wrecked or partially dismantled, stored without having all of the wheels mounted, is in a condition of substantial disrepair, which is parked or stored without having tires inflated." A sedan on four flat tires meets that definition as surely as a dead cart does.

For the car, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US, Peachtree City included.

Where an inoperable car may not sit

Three parts of the code apply at once:

  • Zoning, Section 908: "The open, outside storage of building materials, junk, salvage, and inoperative vehicles is prohibited unless specifically permitted in the zoning district, and such use is properly screened from view from adjoining streets and properties."
  • Property maintenance, Section 18-90: "no inoperative or unlicensed motor vehicle shall be parked, kept or stored on any premises," and no vehicle may be "in a state of major disassembly, disrepair, or in the process of being stripped or dismantled." Body work and major overhaul belong inside a structure.
  • Abandoned property, defined in Section 42-36: the same definitions section counts wrecked, inoperable or partly dismantled motor vehicles "left abandoned and unprotected from the elements" as abandoned personal property.

The same section of the maintenance code also bans outside storage of "inoperable golf carts or parts." Our offer covers cars and trucks, not carts.

Do not push it onto the lawn

Moving a dead car off the driveway and onto the grass trades one violation for another. Section 78-17 makes it unlawful to park any vehicle, golf carts included, "anywhere on private property, including any privately maintained area adjacent to a paved surface, except on a paved asphalt, concrete or other acceptable all-weather surface." The surface has to fit the car "with all four wheels and undercarriage" inside it.

Bigger vehicles face more limits. Anything over 20 feet long or 8,600 pounds empty, or any trailer, may not park in front of or beside the house or within 20 feet of the rear lot line unless it is inside a garage or roofed carport. It may not be left along a residential street at all. That matters if a dead pickup with a long bed, or a car on a trailer, is the problem.

A Fayette County tag office

One Fayette County tag office we checked is at 140 W. Stonewall Avenue in Fayetteville, (770) 461-3611. That is roughly 8 miles northeast of central Peachtree City by straight-line distance; Fayette may have more.

Your part of the transfer happens on the title itself. Fill in the assignment on the back, print and sign under Seller with any co-owner doing the same, and give the odometer reading in whole miles. Any erasure can void the title. After the handover, the buyer must title and register it within 7 days, one week.

Fayette requires emissions tests too, though the three newest model years skip them.

The plate and the paperwork after

Keep your plate; Georgia does not let it go with the car. Then close the registration (DRIVES e-Services online, or an MV-18J at a Fayette County tag office) and drop the insurance only after that. Save a copy of the signed title and of any bill of sale you made. After you sell lists each step, and Georgia has state rules.
