Selling a dead car in Mableton

We could not find a Mableton junk-car ordinance online, so this page uses Georgia law. The city could still have stricter local rules. The state's line is clear enough: a car "left unattended on private property for not less than 30 days" counts as an abandoned motor vehicle. If yours is getting close to that, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Georgia's abandoned-car clocks

These come from the Department of Revenue's motor vehicle manual. Mableton may add stricter rules.

Where the car isWhen it counts as abandoned
Private propertyLeft unattended 30 days or more
Public propertyLeft unattended at least 5 days, with no sign the owner means to return
A dealer, repair shop or wrecker serviceNot called for within 30 days

The public-property clock is the short one. A car that dies on a road shoulder and gets left there is on a five-day count, not thirty.

If a tow firm has it

Georgia sets out the steps a towing and storage firm must take:

  • 15 calendar days: the firm's deadline, counted from the tow, to notify every owner by certified mail or by hand.
  • 10 calendar days: after that notice, the firm may go to court over its lien, and the court can order a sale.
  • No owner found: a newspaper ad goes out within 60 days, running weekly for two straight weeks.

See towed or impounded.

Emissions in Cobb County

Cobb sits on the list of 13 metro counties where Georgia requires emissions tests. For the 2026 registration year, gasoline cars and light trucks built 2002 to 2023 and rated at or under 8,500 lb GVWR get tested; the three latest model years are exempt. A new Cobb resident gets 30 days to test and register. If yours failed and was never fixed, failed inspection covers selling one.

Cobb title office, plates and registration

Title and tag work for Mableton runs through the Cobb County Tax Commissioner. We checked the office at 4400 Lower Roswell Rd in Marietta ((770) 528-8600). On a map it is about 14 miles northeast of Mableton. Cobb may have others.

The seller keeps the plate. After the sale, close out the registration in DRIVES or on Form MV-18J, and only then call the insurer. A salvage dealer who buys a car has 48 hours from close of business to report it, and cancels the title through Auto Data Direct.

Questions people ask

Does Mableton have its own junk-car ordinance?
We could not find Mableton's code online, so this page uses Georgia law only. Mableton may add its own rules on top of Georgia's deadlines, so check with the city first.
Does my Mableton car need an emissions test?
Probably, if it is a gasoline car or light truck built 2002 to 2023 and rated 8,500 lb GVWR or less: Cobb is a testing county for 2026 registration. Cars from the three newest model years skip the test.
A tow company has my car. How long before it can go to court?
The towing firm owes owners a notice within 15 calendar days of the tow. Ten calendar days after that notice, the firm can petition a court on its lien, and a judge may order the car sold.
