Selling a dead or junk car in Smyrna
Smyrna prints its junk-car rule twice. Section 46-114 and Section 80-5 carry the same title and open with the same sentence. It is unlawful to let motor vehicles "in a wholly or partially rusted, wrecked, junked, dismantled, inoperative condition to remain on the premises," whether that is a home, a business or a vacant lot. The text we have gives a car no waiting period before that applies.

The 30 days that do not cover your car
Section 46-114 has a second sentence with a number in it, and it is easy to misread. It covers indoor furniture, appliances, machinery and other belongings kept outside, "other than operable motor vehicles, boats, trailers and other watercraft," and the limit is "a period in excess of 30 day[s]." That clock is for a sofa on the patio. In Section 80-5, the same sentence ends at "exposed to public view" with no day count at all.
So do not plan around a month of grace for an inoperative car. The vehicle sentence states no clock in the passage we read.
Parking on Smyrna streets
Section 98-32 lets police tow any vehicle "found parked in any place where parking is not permitted at that time," or parked against any traffic ordinance, to a vehicle pound. Section 98-2 says how a car must sit on a two-way road: right-hand wheels parallel to and "within 12 inches of the right-hand curb." A car that quit and was left at an angle is already outside that line.
Neighbors can also ask for a no-parking zone. A written petition goes to the city engineer, signed by "at least 70 percent of the owners of property abutting the street."
When a tow company has it
If a Smyrna tow ends with your car at a storage yard, the yard owes each owner written notice within 15 calendar days. When it cannot track you down, it advertises in a newspaper within 60 days, two weeks running. Ten calendar days past its notice, the yard may take its lien to court. Towed or impounded covers your options.
A Cobb County tag office, and what you sign
The Cobb tag office closest to Smyrna is in Marietta at 4400 Lower Roswell Rd. Its number is (770) 528-8600. That is roughly 9 miles northeast of downtown Smyrna by direct line, and Cobb may have more branches.
What the seller does, per the Department of Revenue:
- Fill in the transfer section on the back of the original title. Under Seller, print your name and sign; any joint owner does the same.
- Write the odometer reading in whole miles.
- Keep it clean. Georgia warns that erasures or alterations may void a title, and a changed purchase date may cost a $10 penalty.
- Hand the title to the new owner and keep a copy, plus any bill of sale.
Older iron is simpler: Georgia skips the title for 1985-and-earlier models and relies on a bill of sale.
Plate, registration, insurance, in that order
A Smyrna seller removes the plate and keeps it, as Georgia requires. Then cancel the tag with an MV-18J at a Cobb County tag office or on DRIVES e-Services, and keep insurance until that step is finished. A pending-suspension letter that turns up after the sale can be set aside, the Department of Revenue says, once the car is sold. After you sell has the rest.

Questions people ask
- Does Smyrna give me 30 days to move a dead car?
- Not in the text we have. The 30-day limit in Section 46-114 covers indoor belongings such as furniture and appliances stored outside, and it excludes operable vehicles from that list. The sentence about rusted, wrecked or inoperative motor vehicles states no day count in the passage we read.
- Can Smyrna police tow a car parked on the street?
- Yes. Section 98-32 allows police to tow any vehicle parked where parking is not allowed at that time, or parked against any traffic ordinance, to a vehicle pound.
- What does the seller fill in on a Georgia title?
- Smyrna sellers complete the assignment section on the title's reverse, each co-owner printing and signing, with mileage given in whole miles. Avoid erasures, which can void it.
