Selling a GMC Caballero

NHTSA's complaint file holds no owner complaints for the GMC Caballero, counted as of October 10, 2026. What it does list are 2 recall campaigns, one for a cruise control part that could raise engine speed on its own.

Known problems: what the recalls say

With no complaints on file, the recalls are the only problem record in the data. These two Caballero recall numbers cover the full campaign, and that can take in other GM models too.

  • 89V102 (1984): the cruise control servo bail uses a little nylon bushing that can work loose. That can cause sudden, intermittent jumps in engine speed, or dieseling, where the engine runs on after the ignition is off. The fix was a new bushing. The campaign lists 1,755,897 vehicles, far more than Caballeros alone.
  • 87V168 (1987): the manual valve link in the automatic transmission's column shift may be improperly formed. The fix replaced the manual valve detent lever link. 11,936 vehicles in the campaign.

The Caballero, briefly

According to Wikipedia, GMC built the Caballero from 1977 to 1987 as a cousin of the Chevrolet El Camino, with the engine up front driving the rear wheels. It rode on the A-body from 1978 to 1981 and the G-body from 1982 to 1987, so every year in EPA's data, 1984 to 1987, is a G-body car. Arlington Assembly in Texas built it from 1978 to 1984.

The infobox lists a 3.8 L (229 cu in) Chevrolet V6, a 3-speed Saginaw manual and a 117-inch wheelbase. Earlier engines ran from a 200 CID V6 to a 350 CID four-barrel V8 in 1978-1979. Its predecessor was the GMC Sprint. The name is Spanish; Wikipedia gives "gentleman" as its common meaning today, and "horseman" or "knight" as the technical one.

Later model years usually trail older ones because they've spent less time on the road; on the Caballero, every year sits at zero.

Selling your Caballero whole

  1. Have the VIN, the mileage if the odometer works, and what's wrong.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it sits, from barn to backyard to a rented storage space, and whether it rolls. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it whole, trim and wheels included, and mention anything already removed.
  5. Have the title ready. If it was never transferred to you, see car not in your name.

Fix it or sell it?

A car this old is often a question of time more than money. If it's a build you'll never finish, old project car lays out the choice. If it has sat for years, sitting for years covers what to check. Thinking of stripping it first? Read part it out or sell it whole.

Questions people ask

Does the GMC Caballero have any NHTSA complaints?
NHTSA's complaint data shows zero Caballero reports as of October 10, 2026. That means no owner filed one that NHTSA's file assigns to the Caballero, not that the car had no problems.
What recalls cover the Caballero?
Two. Recall 89V102 covers 1984 models with a cruise control bushing that can slip and raise engine speed unexpectedly. Recall 87V168 covers 1987 models with a manual valve link in the automatic transmission that may be improperly formed. These two Caballero recall numbers cover the full campaign, and that can take in other GM models too.
Will you buy a Caballero that's been parked for years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits, and tell us where it's parked.
