Selling an old GMC Sonoma pickup

The 1994 and 1995 Sonomas account for 437 of the truck's 1,346 complaints to NHTSA, about a third of the total. Brakes lead both years: 126 complaints on the 1994 and 76 on the 1995.

An old Sonoma with soft brakes, a tired 4.3 or a rusted bed doesn't need fixing before it goes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you sell the whole car as it sits. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The Sonoma in brief

Wikipedia lists the Sonoma as a compact pickup that followed the Chevrolet LUV and was replaced by the Canyon. The EPA's data carries the Sonoma name from the 1991 model year, in 2WD and 4WD form, plus a flex-fuel 2WD. Production in North America ended in January 2004.

Every number counts complaints owners sent NHTSA, totaled on October 10, 2026.

What owners reported, generation by generation

1991-1993: the end of the first generation

Wikipedia dates the first generation to 1981-1993, with GMT325 underpinnings, assembled in Moraine, Ohio. The four-cylinder engines it lists are 1.95, 2.0 and 2.5 liters. This was also the era of the Sonoma GT, which Wikipedia notes was not turbocharged, so its cluster had no boost gauge.

These three years have 112 complaints, and brakes lead each one. Two campaigns stand out:

  • 94V093 (1993): worn low and reverse clutch plates in the automatic could stop the park pawl from locking, letting a running truck roll. Dealers checked the fluid for contamination.
  • 99V193 (1991-1996): 4WD trucks with ABS got a repaired or replaced 2WD/4WD switch. The campaign lists 1,125,749 pickups and SUVs.

1994-2004: the second generation

Wikipedia says the second generation dropped the old 2.5 four and 2.8 V6 for a 2.2-liter four and the 4.3-liter Vortec V6, with a 4-speed 4L60-E automatic. It adds two later changes: a four-door Crew Cab for 2001, three years before the full-size Silverado 1500 got one, and a 2004 lineup cut to the Crew Cab alone.

This generation holds 1,232 complaints. They fall into three themes.

Brakes, 1994-1998. Brakes top the list on 1994 through 1997. Two recalls touch the lines: 97V146, aimed at 1996-1997 trucks with the 4.3 V6, whose front brake line could wear through against the oil pan, and 97V218 for a 1998 rear brake pipe that could crack and leak slowly. ABS pieces drew two more on the 2000: 99V220 (pipe nuts on 2WD trucks not seated) and 00V055 (an out-of-spec spring clip in the ABS motor).

Visibility. Visibility is second on 1994-1997 and first on the 1998, with 50 complaints. Recall 98V150 replaced wiper motor circuit boards on 1995-1996 trucks, in a campaign that lists 1,557,585 GM pickups and SUVs.

Structure, 2000-2002. On the 2000, 38 of 136 complaints name the structure, and on the 2001, 26 of 89. None of the 15 recall campaigns is a structure campaign.

A few odd ones fill out the list. Recall 97V208 found that a wiring harness clip on 1998 trucks could melt onto the exhaust manifold; dealers had those trucks towed in. Recall 97V008 covered just 55 1996 trucks whose paint peeled at the windshield opening, and every one was bought back. Recall 96V035 inspected 1996 manual transmissions built with parts not machined to spec.

The one 1990 complaint and one 2005 complaint are filed under those years in NHTSA's file. Some Sonoma recalls cover two or more years, so adding the column up gives more than 15.

Repair it or sell it?

Price the repair in writing first. Then find what a running Sonoma with the same year, cab and engine brings. If fixing the Sonoma would use up most of that amount, selling it broken is the better call.

  1. Enter the VIN on NHTSA's recall search. Old campaigns can still show as open.
  2. Brakes? The bad brakes guide covers when to walk away.
  3. Rust in the frame? See rotted frame before you spend anything.
  4. Just old and tired? Old or high mileage walks through the choice.

Selling a Sonoma whole

  1. Note the cab (regular, extended or Crew Cab), the engine, 2WD or 4WD, and what's wrong.
  2. Request an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it's sitting (yard, carport, behind a barn) and whether someone could push it. We bring the truck there, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep it whole. Mention anything already pulled.
  5. Find the title and your driver's license before the truck arrives. Title lost? See selling with no title.

Also on this site: the Canyon that replaced it, the earlier S-15, and the full-size C/K Pickup.

Questions people ask

Which Sonoma years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1994 (224) and 1995 (213), counted as of October 10, 2026. The 1998 (156), 1996 (148) and 2000 (136) come next. Brakes lead on 1994 through 1997.
Why are there almost no complaints on a 2004 Sonoma?
Wikipedia says only the Crew Cab was kept for 2004 and production ended in January 2004. NHTSA's file holds one complaint on a 2004.
My Sonoma has the 4.3 V6. Was there a brake line recall?
Yes, for 1996-1997 trucks with the 4.3. Recall 97V146 found the front brake line could rub on the oil pan until it leaked fluid. Dealers checked the clearance. The campaign lists 146,167 vehicles, which may include other GM pickups.
Will you take a Sonoma that has sat for years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Flat tires or seized brakes? Mention that too.
