Selling a GMC Terrain with engine trouble or worse

The engine shows up in close to a third of Terrain complaints, 990 out of 3,153 at NHTSA when we checked on October 10, 2026. Most come from the first generation. The 2010 to 2015 models alone account for 744 of them.

First generation, 2010-2017: engine, wipers, headlights

Wikipedia says the Terrain replaced the Pontiac Torrent, built from August 2009 at the CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, beside the Chevrolet Equinox. Every first-generation Terrain in the article has a 2.4-liter four and a 6-speed automatic. IIHS named the 2010 a Top Safety Pick.

Engine. It tops the complaint list on the 2010 through 2014 and again on the 2017. The 2013 has 175 engine complaints out of 364, the 2012 has 155 of 364, and the 2011 has 150 of 386. The file records the system an owner chose, not the specific part that went.

Wipers. On the 2015 and 2016, visibility and wiper complaints pass the engine. From 2012 to 2016 they total 328. Two recalls deal with ball joints in the wiper module that can corrode and stop the wipers: 16V582000 for the 2013 and 22V165000 for the 2014-2015. Their 367,808 and 681,509 vehicles include the Equinox.

Headlights. Recall 22V137000 names only the Terrain: 740,581 of them from 2010 to 2017, whose headlight housings can throw too much light above the road. Dealers add an applique.

Second generation, 2018-2024: brakes and a fuel pump

The Terrain shrank to a compact crossover and moved to San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Engines were a 1.5-liter turbo four, a 2.0-liter turbo four through 2020, and a diesel with a 6-speed that was later discontinued. The gas engines used 9-speed automatics.

Service brakes lead the complaints on the 2018, 2019 and 2020, with 173 across the three years. Recall 18V576000 has dealers bleed the brake system on 2018-2019 models; its 210,628 vehicles span Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac cars too. Two 2018-only campaigns matter as well. 18V340000 reprograms an air bag module that may not power down when the vehicle is shut off; it covers 88,503 Terrains and no other model. 17V516000 replaces a right front intermediate driveshaft that may fracture.

On the 2022, fuel and propulsion complaints lead with 26 of 88. Recall 23V013000 replaces a fuel pump module that may not send enough fuel, which can stall the engine. It covers 23,323 vehicles, Equinoxes included.

Third generation, 2025 on

GM started building the third Terrain on October 14, 2024, in San Luis Potosí, with a 1.5-liter turbo four. Front-drive 2025-2026 models use a CVT; all-wheel-drive ones and every 2027 get an 8-speed automatic. The 2025 has 13 complaints and the 2026 has 33. Two model years in, those numbers are too young to read much into.

Fix the engine or sell?

First-generation Terrains hold 744 of the 990 engine complaints.

  1. Price both sides. Ask a shop to put the engine job in writing, and look up asking prices for running Terrains like yours. A quote near that figure says sell it as it sits. The blown engine guide walks through it.
  2. Run the VIN at NHTSA's lookup. Headlight and wiper recall work is free, and our open recall guide explains selling with it undone.
  3. Brake complaint on a 2018-2019? Ask a dealer about the brake bleed recall first.
  4. Bills piling up? See repairs cost more than it's worth.

Terrain complaints and recalls by model year

Terrain owners had filed these reports with NHTSA by October 10, 2026. They count complaints and don't rate the car. "Name the engine" shows that year's engine total. Several campaigns cover two or more years, so summing the last column overcounts.

Selling your Terrain whole

  1. It helps to have the VIN, the mileage, the drive type and the trim badge (SLE, Denali, AT4) on hand. If it's a diesel, say so.
  2. Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us the Terrain's location and if it moves in Neutral. A dead engine is fine; a locked-up wheel is worth mentioning.
  4. Keep it complete. Leave the converter, wheels and battery on, and mention anything already removed.
  5. For pickup, the title plus a driver's license or other ID is what's needed. After you sell covers plates and insurance by state.

Other GMC crossovers and SUVs: the Acadia, the Envoy and the Yukon, or every GMC we cover.

Questions people ask

Which Terrain years have the most engine complaints?
The 2013 (175), the 2012 (155), the 2011 (150) and the 2014 (106), per our October 10, 2026 pull of NHTSA's file. All four are first-generation Terrains. Terrains from the last few years haven't been around long enough to compare.
What was the Terrain headlight recall?
Recall 22V137000 covers 740,581 Terrains from 2010 to 2017. A reflection off the headlight housing can throw too much light above the vehicle. Dealers add a headlamp applique free of charge, and Wikipedia describes the fix as cleaning the lights and applying a translucent decal.
Do you buy a Terrain with a seized or knocking engine?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Just tell us it won't run.
