Selling a junk or non-running GMC Yukon
Engine complaints have taken over the newest Yukons. Engine is the component owners named most across all 9,297 Yukon complaints filed with NHTSA (1,376), and 1,091 of those sit on the 2018 to 2026 models. On the 2021, 285 of 561 complaints name the engine. On the 2023, it's 270 of 461.

What owners reported, generation by generation
Each Yukon number here counts owner complaints NHTSA had logged as of October 10, 2026. They are not a reliability grade, and a late-model Yukon has been on the road for fewer years of reports. Generations and engines follow Wikipedia's GMC Yukon article.
| Generation | Model years | Engines listed on Wikipedia | Complaints | What owners named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 1992-1999 | 5.7 L V8, 4-speed 4L60E automatic | 701 | Hydraulic brakes; steering on the 1997 |
| 2nd | 2000-2006 | 4.8 L Vortec 4800 V8, 4-speed automatic | 2,312 | Brakes on 2000-2002, electrical system on 2003-2005 |
| 3rd | 2007-2014 | 4.8, 5.3 and 6.2 L V8s; 4-speed or 6-speed automatic | 2,392 | Air bags |
| 4th | 2015-2020 | 5.3 and 6.2 L Ecotec3 FlexFuel V8s; 6-speed, then 10-speed | 2,185 | Exterior lighting on 2015-2016, power train on 2017, engine on 2018-2020 |
| 5th | 2021-2026 | Not listed | 1,707 | Engine, every year |
Wikipedia counts 2000 as both the last first-generation year and the first second-generation year. This table puts 2000 with the second.
1992-1999: brakes and a steering year
Hydraulic brakes top the list on six of the eight first-generation years. On the 1999, 105 of 234 complaints name them. The 1997 is the outlier: 50 of its 133 complaints name the steering. The 1995, the first year of the five-door body, has seats on top with 23.
Two wiper recalls cover the 1994-1996 Yukon, 98V150001 and 03V159000. Cracked solder joints on the wiper motor circuit board can make the wipers quit or work on and off. Both campaigns span well over a million GM pickups, SUVs and minivans, so those vehicle counts are not Yukon-only.
2000-2006: brake lines, ABS and wiring
The 2001 has 421 complaints, and three brake categories lead: hydraulic brakes (97), service brakes (57) and the parking brake (34). Recall 00V345000 covers 2000 trucks whose front right brake pipe may lose its clearance from the body cross sill. Recall 05V379000 covers 2000-2002 trucks with unwanted ABS activation, more likely where roads are salted. Dealers clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surface and add rust inhibitor. That campaign covers 1,353,718 GM pickups and SUVs.
Then the complaints turn electrical: 139 of 514 on the 2003 and 160 of 446 on the 2004.
2007-2014: the air bag years
The 2007 drew 774 complaints, 341 of them about air bags, and they report 83 injuries. Air bags lead on six of the eight third-generation years. Three recalls put in a new front passenger inflator at no charge: 21V050000 for 2007-2011, 21V053000 for 2009-2013 and 21V054000 for 2010-2014. Their 2,641,272, 692,526 and 1,778,128 vehicles include the Escalade, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe and Sierra.
2015-2020: lights, brakes, then the engine
The 2015 has more complaints than any other Yukon year, 974, and 388 of them name the exterior lighting. Brakes follow with 140. Recall 19V645000 covers 2015-2018 trucks whose vacuum pump may not build enough vacuum for brake assist. 19V761000 reprograms the brake control module on 2015-2020 trucks with the 5.3-liter engine and a 3.08 rear axle. One 2016 campaign, 16V256000, carries a do-not-drive warning: dealers replace both front upper control arms. Its 3,738 vehicles span Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC pickups and SUVs, so that count is not Yukon-only.
Engine first tops the list on the 2018, with 36 of 126.
2021-2026: the engine
The 2021 has 14 recall campaigns, more than any other Yukon year, and 285 engine complaints. The 2022 has 204 of 351 and the 2023 has 270 of 461. The complaint file says which system an owner picked, not what failed inside it. Yukons from 2024 to 2026 show lower counts, and they've been driven the shortest time.
Yukon complaints and recalls by model year
This table lists Yukon complaints by model year from NHTSA data pulled October 10, 2026. Recalls show how many campaigns touch each year. Many name several years, which is why that column can't simply be added up. EPA lists a 2027 Yukon, but the file has no 2027 complaints yet.
| Model year | Complaints | Named most | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1992-1996 | 254 (19, 17, 58, 90, 70) | Hydraulic brakes; seats on 1995 | 1, 0, 2, 6, 3 |

Repair it or sell it?
Weigh the shop's quote against what a working Yukon from your year sells for. If the first creeps toward the second, sell it as it sits.
- Run the VIN first. NHTSA's lookup shows open campaigns. On a 2007-2014, look for the passenger inflator recalls.
- Engine down on a 2021-2024? Ask a GMC dealer whether any open recall applies before you pay for an engine. Then weigh it with the blown engine guide.
- Brake or ABS trouble on a 1999-2002? Brakes lead the complaints on the 1999 and 2001, and recall 05V379000 covers unwanted ABS activation on 2000-2002 trucks. The bad brakes guide covers what to check.
- Quote higher than the truck? See repairs cost more than it's worth.
Selling the Yukon whole
- Start with the VIN and mileage, plus the drivetrain: 2WD, 4WD or AWD. Say if it's a Denali, an XL or a Hybrid, since EPA lists all three.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe where it sits. A Yukon is long and heavy. Tell us if the wheels roll and how much space is around it, so we send a truck able to load it.
- Leave the parts on. Keep the wheels, seats and catalytic converters in place. If anything has been removed, tell us, since that changes what we offer.
- When the Yukon is loaded, hand our driver the title and show your ID. Each state treats plates its own way, and after you sell explains them.
No title? Start with the no-title guide. For other big GMCs, see the Suburban and Sierra 1500, or every GMC we cover.
Questions people ask
- Which Yukon model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2015 leads with 974 by NHTSA's October 10, 2026 tally, ahead of the 2007 (774), the 2021 (561), the 2016 (517) and the 2003 (514). A 2025 or 2026 Yukon has been driven only a year or two, so its low count tells you little.
- Why do so many 2021-2023 Yukon complaints mention the engine?
- The complaint file records the part of the vehicle an owner picked, not what broke inside it. What it does show: engine is the top category on every Yukon model year from 2018 through 2026, and 285 of the 561 complaints on the 2021 name it. Ahead of paying for a new engine, run the Yukon's VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls and ask a GMC dealer if a campaign is still open.
- Is my 2007-2014 Yukon in the passenger air bag inflator recall?
- It may be. Three campaigns swap in a new front passenger inflator at no cost: 21V050000 (2007-2011), 21V053000 (2009-2013) and 21V054000 (2010-2014). Each one also covers other GM trucks and SUVs, and not every Yukon in those years is included. Your VIN gives the answer.
- Will you buy a Yukon that doesn't start or move?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Say where your Yukon sits, if the wheels turn and if it's 4WD, so a big enough truck comes.
