Some Fit faults trace to a recall and many do not, so a VIN recall check is a quick first step. The years that matter are laid out below.

Third2015-20201.5-liter DOHC direct injection, 130 hp6-speed manual or CVTCelaya, Mexico

Honda also built a battery-electric Fit EV on the second-generation car: a 20 kWh lithium-ion pack, a 92 kW motor and an EPA range of 82 miles. NHTSA's file has no 2014 Fit complaints; the third generation went on sale in June 2014 as a 2015 model.

Problems tied to each generation

2007-2008: a window switch that can burn

The first Fits drew more complaints than any later year: 370 for the 2007, led by steering (81), air bags (64) and structure (59). No recall explains the steering or structure counts.

The recall to know is 10V-033. Water can enter at the driver's window and reach the master power window switch, and NHTSA's notice warns that "an overheated switch can cause smoke, melting and fire." Dealers fitted a cover around the switch. In 2013 Honda recalled the same cars again (13V-260) because that cover could separate over time. Two more recalls hit these years: 10V-624, for low-beam wires pulled too tight so the headlights can quit, and 20V-770, for drive shafts that can break on manual-transmission 2007-2008 Fits.

2009-2013: valve springs, stability control, Takata

Air bags are the top complaint on every model year from 2008 through 2013. NHTSA's recall file lists 14 frontal air bag inflator campaigns on Fits, driver and passenger side; Takata recall 16V-061 alone covers 2009-2013 Fits and the 2013-2014 Fit EV.

Three mechanical recalls matter for a car that won't go:

  • 11V-101 covers 97,201 2009-2010 Fits. One of the four VTEC spring assemblies can fail, and "may cause the vehicle to stall during operation."
  • 13V-157 fixed stability control software on 2012-2013 Fits with a free update.
  • 20V-770, from December 2020, covers 2009-2013 Fits first sold in, or at any time registered in, certain northern states the notice names. A broken drive shaft means a sudden loss of drive power, and a parked Fit could roll away if the parking brake isn't set.

2015-2020: electrical complaints, coils, cameras

On every model year from 2015 to 2020, the electrical system is the most-named component. It peaks at 106 of 284 complaints on the 2015. NHTSA's data doesn't say what those owners saw.

The 2015 has its own short list. Recall 15V-559 covers ignition coils on early 2015 cars that can overheat and stall the engine. Recall 15V-697 covers 2015-2016 LX Fits without a sunroof, where rear grab handle brackets "may puncture the side curtain air bags." The 2015 is also on 15V-574, the CVT software recall shared with the Civic.

Later cars collect electronics recalls. The rearview camera on 2018-2020 Fits can stay blank when the car is started with a key (23V-046), and Honda recalled the same cars again in 2024 (24V-384). The 2019 is listed on three fuel pump recalls: 20V-314, 21V-215 and 23V-858. Honda's report for 23V-858 says a low-density impeller can deform inside the pump, and then "the engine may not start or can stall while driving."

The record, year by year

Fit counts below come straight from NHTSA's records for the 2007-2020 model years, retrieved October 10, 2026. Campaigns naming several Fit years show up in each of those rows, so this column reaches 93 while the Fit's campaign total is 34.

Worth fixing?

Check what a working Fit like yours goes for, then look at the estimate. When the bill nears that number, the repair rarely pays. Before paying for anything, rule out the recall fixes:

  1. Stalls on a 2009-2010 or a 2019? Those years have stall recalls (valve springs on the first, fuel pumps on the second). Look up the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
  2. CVT slipping or shuddering on a 2015-2020? Our CVT failure guide explains what usually goes and how to weigh the bill.
  3. Engine gone? See blown engine for how to judge it against the car's value.

For the things that raise or lower a price on a dead car, read what a junk car is worth.

How selling your Fit works

  1. Start with the details: VIN, mileage, generation, what's wrong and whether it rolls.
  2. Ask for a price on this page, or phone (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where the Fit is parked: carport, garage level, curbside. A tow truck comes to it, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep it complete. Sell the whole car as it sits, catalytic converter and wheels included. Anything already gone should be mentioned up front.
  5. Hand over the title, keys and a photo ID at pickup. Need help with plates or a lost title? Read after you sell or the no-title guide.

Other small Hondas: the Civic, the HR-V and the Insight.

Questions people ask

Which Honda Fit year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2007, the first US model year, with 370 as of NHTSA's October 10, 2026 files. The 2009 comes next with 287, then the 2015 with 284.
The driver's window switch on my 2007 or 2008 Fit smells hot. What is that?
That matches recall 10V-033: water can get in at the driver's window and reach the master power window switch, which can overheat. Honda recalled the same cars again in 2013 (13V-260) because the first fix, a cover over the switch, could come loose. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
My 2019 Fit stalled and won't restart. Is it a known problem?
It could be the fuel pump. Three recalls list the 2019 Fit for its fuel pump: 20V-314, 21V-215 and 23V-858. Have a dealer run the VIN to learn which, if any, were never done.
Do you buy a Fit that doesn't run at all?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us whether the Fit rolls and where it's parked when you ask for an offer.
